One of our kiddos was stricken with the worst stomach flu Tuesday night. We were ALL up 9 times (who was counting? ALL of us!🤣) during the night and yesterday I felt like a mom of newborn babies all over again! Yesterday was better but he had a fever and slept on and off most of the day.

Fast forward to last night…. Just as I was drifting off to sleep he appeared at my bedside. He was speaking nonsense and not acting like himself. I guided him back upstairs (yep he navigated the stairs all on his own during this episode), tucked him in and left. Then my husband and I proceeded to not sleep (again) checked on him a million times… we were nervous he would attempt the stairs again!

Luckily I knew right away that this was sleep walking and why it had occurred. I figured many parents might not know so I created this post.

I sleep walked once as a child and it turns out about 30% of kids will experience this and 18% of people in general.

For toddlers and young children, sometimes long naps can really throw a wrench into your bedtime routine. Many kiddos drop their nap too early because parents find the nap makes bedtime so much harder. But many parents don’t have an understanding of how much time their child needs to build up enough sleep pressure to make falling asleep at bedtime easier.

Starting around 2 years old, most kids need 6 hours between the end of their nap and bedtime. So if the nap is lasting too long or drifting too late it can really push bedtime pretty late too.
😴
You want to have a cut off time for the nap so that bedtime can happen at a pretty regular and reasonable time each night.
😴
Many times undesirable bedtime behaviors develop in response to a bedtime that’s too early. Fixing the timing can help, though if those behaviors have been happening for a while you might need some additional interventions too!

How much sleep does your toddler/young child need? Of course every child’s specific needs may vary but this chart is a great starting point.

If you aren’t sure whether or not your child is getting enough sleep, take a closer look at their mood at the end of the day around 5 PM. Are they calm, able to focus, able to move through your routines easily? If yes, they’re most likely getting enough sleep. If, however they’re moody, unusually inattentive, and having more trouble with transitions they may need a little more sleep!

Teaching and maintaining healthy sleep habits to your little ones shouldn’t feel like all rules and no connection. Aside from having a super connecting bedtime routine, it’s just as important to have a super connecting morning routine too.
😴
Even if they popped out of bed more than once last night or had difficulty calming their body at bedtime, tell them how much you missed them all night. You know they missed you, so let them know it’s normal to miss the people we love the most when it’s time to close our eyes for the night.
😴
It only takes a minute to use one of these phrases. Add in a nice warm hug and I’d say that’s a pretty awesome way to start your day.

I hope you all had the best Thanksgiving break! I want to thank each and every one of you for being here and supporting this small business I started over 5 years ago! Whether you chose me to help your family with sleep, have referred me to your friends, or shared or liked my posts, it all matters and I see and appreciate you!

Although I run Happy Littles technically all on my own, I couldn’t do it without all of the support I receive from friends and family. I take calls on the weekends and during our own bedtime routines, I write sleep plans early in the mornings before anyone else is awake, and I check sleep logs on family vacations. My husband is so supportive and picks up the slack whenever I need to step away…. He’s the best!

I love what I do and I hope to keep doing it for years to come! If you ever find yourself listening to a new parent struggling with sleep please let them know that there is help available. No matter your parenting style and beliefs around sleep there is a way to improve your sleep! And when we improve our sleep, we improve our health and that is worth it!

💥 Three year olds 💥 can be incredibly tricky when it comes to sleep! This mom had tried it all including melatonin at bedtime. Guess what, melatonin does not typically stop nighttime wakings! We tweaked her schedule, changed up the bedtime routine, added in a toddler clock…. And it didn’t happen overnight but eventually….. she started sleeping through the night!

Sometimes I’ll recommend a mindfulness component before reading if your child has trouble calming their body for a story. But I like to do some breath-work right before saying goodnight… it’s a nice way to transition from reading to sleeping!

We are lucky that we were able to enjoy our 4th of July Parade safely. Just 20 miles away in Highland Park parade goers were running for their lives when a sniper opened fire.

You say you’re voting for “a better future” for my children.

Is fearing for my childrens’ lives “better”? It seems reasonable we should expect the freedom to move about our daily lives without worrying about being gunned down.

You say the “streets” of chicago are unsafe.

But what about the streets of the suburbs? It seems reasonable we should expect the freedom to move about ALL of our neighborhoods without worrying about being gunned down.

You call yourself “pro life”.

But what about the lives of all the children we’ve lost to gun violence? As of June 2022 we’ve lost 686 children to gun violence and injured another 1700 (Gun Violence Archive). This is not to mention all the moms, dads, aunts, uncles, etc that children have lost to gun violence leaving them to grow up without their loved ones. This is also not to mention the children who have been traumatized witnessing these unspeakable crimes.

This review is from a mom with a daughter who was 2 years and 9 months old when we started working together. The method they picked was one of my favorites. It took a little creativity and lots of patience and consistency. But they crushed it! They went from having 2 hour long bedtime routines with 2-4 difficult night wakings and crabby moods to sleeping through the night in 2 weeks. 🦷Teething!🦷 Did you know that research has found that no specific teething symptom occurred in more than 35% of actual teething infants? How is a parent supposed to tell what’s keeping their baby awake at night if there’s no stand out symptom?!? It’s just down right confusing.

The best way to tell? Work on self settling at the beginning of the night before teething starts. No, you don’t have to use a “cry it out” approach. You have choices. But this way, if your baby can usually self settle but suddenly can’t, you’ll be able to detect that change and act accordingly.

One of the complaints I hear while working with families is that even after their baby or toddler starts sleeping through the night, the parents are still waking frequently in the night. That’s the worst!

Initially when this happens, it’s no huge deal. After all you probably want to check on your child a little more since they aren’t waking and calling for you on their own right?
😴
If it persists, take a look at your sleep hygiene. All kinds of new habits develop when we’re up all night with our kids. Your body craves more sugar during the day as fast energy to compensate for your fatigue, maybe you started late night scrolling while doing those night feeding, and/or maybe you even started drinking caffeine later in the day too. All of these things can cause sleep troubles!

One of the most common issues parents ask me about is “how do I get my toddler to sleep later?”

This is honestly one of the trickiest sleep issues I’m confronted with. First, we have to figure out “why” it’s happening. Then we can target the “why” to see if we can get that rise time to shift later.

If your toddler or preschool age child used to sleep later and is now waking up super early, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to slide them later once again.
