Every week you should receive an email from us, where we will tell you where the sign-up location will be. It is usually in the art’s block foyer. We will also be posting sign-up information on Facebook and Instagram, for those who are not yet members.
The hikes are every weekend, either on Saturday or Sunday, depending on the availability of committee members.
What kind of gear do I need?
You ABSOLUTELY REQUIRE hiking boots (ankle height) and a raincoat. If you have rain-trousers, these also can be a lifesaver. Do NOT wear jeans. Be prepared for the worst. Bring lots of warm layers, such as fleeces, hats, gloves. A spare pair of socks is a great thing to have. A packed lunch, lots of snacks and lots of water are essential for these hikes too. Also bring any medication you might need, eg: inhalers.
What will I need on the hike?
Bring hiking boots, a raincoat, warm layers, a packed lunch and water. A flask of soup or tea (something warm) is also a great idea.
Are the hikes hard?
Honestly, they can be. However, it all depends on the route we take; how long it is and how flat/high up it is. The weather in Ireland can also be very wet and cold, especially high up in the mountains. Therefore we insist that our members bring the gear outlined above. We could have a really easy hike where the sun shines all day, or sometimes we have days where it’s freezing and it rains all day. We do not cancel hikes based on poor weather conditions, unless the conditions are extreme eg: last year’s snow storm meant that everyone was housebound and the roads were too slippery.
Where can I get membership for the society?
The easiest way for you to get a membership to the society is to come to one of the weekly sign-ups for the hikes. You don’t have to go on a hike, it just means we will have a membership card to give you, and we can log you into the system. It is €3 to become a member.
How does the society work?
If you decide to come on a hike we have planned for the weekend (which you will know about through the email) you can come to the sign-up at the allocated time and place. It is €6 to join a hike, this covers the cost of the bus to bring you to the mountain and back to Trinity at the end. On the day of the hike we meet up the Pav in the morning and the hired bus picks us up there and brings us to our destination. It also collects us at the end and brings us back to the Pav in the evening.
Can I sign up for the hike online because?
This is to be decided in the coming weeks whether online sign-ups will be introduced. Until further notice, it is not allowed.
Can I sign up my friends too?
Yes, you can sign a maximum of an extra one extra person when you sign up for a hike. However, the fee for the bus must be paid for your friend too at the sign-up.
