Desert in New Zealand????

This is not a desert, these are ginormous sand dunes created by wind and time in this region.
This was an awesome experience and it was the first time we did sand boarding.

Board rental is 15 $ or bring your own...
This is worth it only if the weather is good, so check it out before you go. Usually people stop here before they go to Cape Reigna.

Use sun block even if it is not summer!

Tutukaka Lighthouse walk - Tutukaka, Whangarei, Northland

1 hour - return

Very underrated track.
This is a great track with a catch! Be careful as if you go during high tie you either do not pass or you have to wet your underwear 😂

Recommended !

Winter is coming in New Zealand...

This grey river is formed by the mountain snow.
This is our journey visiting one of the coolest glacier lakes in New Zealand.

We did not see the dolphins this time around but at least paddle boarding was nice. Akaroa is a famous place for seeing dolphins in their natural habitat.

Lake Marian in Fiordland

One of our favorites! 3-4 hours return.
It was not easy as expected but this is a must.
This is that type of journey where the journey is less important than the end goal. The track is nice but the lake is amazing.
Hope you have good weather as well.
As you can see, at Lake Marian, snow is not afraid of the hot summer sun 😎

Christmas on the beach.

Every year, New Zealanders and aussies spend their Christmas during summer 😅

Even so, the ads with Christmas are with snow and Santa Clause. As a person who spent 25 years in a cold Christmas, it is very strange!

Not to mention the fact that having a Christmas Holiday and a separate summer one is better 🤩

But still, the nature and people make it worth it.

Tutoko Valley Track
This post is short🤗
We do not recommend this track if you are just visiting and not living here. It is long (they say 4 but it is more like 5 hours return) and not necessarily worth it.
It is nice though and very unique and challenging(not dangerous).

Being a kid again in Queenstown 🤗
Queenstown - The most touristy place in New Zealand.
Population: ~60k
Known for scenery as well as for activities like Skydiving and bungee jumping.
Did you know? Bungee Jumping was invented in New Zealand 🤩
Some say that Wanaka is a better option than Queenstown as the rents are cheaper but we think both are a must.
From Queenstown, there are a lot of trips to Milford Sound but we recommend that you rent a place in Te Anau (cheaper and much closer to Milford Sound and not only).

This is not lavender but lupin flowers. In this region, they are everywhere near lakeshores and not only.

Lake Pukaki with Mount Cook reflections

Water temperature in summer: 18-20 degrees C.
In winter the view might be even more breath taking.
This can be a great break between Tekapo and Wanaka.
Water in this region is unimaginable blue and clean even for big lakes like this one.

Wanaka is becoming the new Queenstown.

Not a painting but a view 😊

Mount Aspiring is one of the places a lot of tourists are visiting and the closest city to them is Wanaka.
Wanaka is the 36th most populated city in NZ and you will laugh : 9000 people. Yes, there are only 7 cities in the whole NZ with more than 100k inhabitants.

Even so, if you want to feel in the middle of the nature, look for accommodation near Wanaka. There is a city called Lake Hawea and this is our sunset view.

Mirror Lakes - On our way to Milford Sound
Waking up at 6 AM to catch the 9 AM Milford Sound Boat is not easy but at least you can be gifted with an amazing view of the morning mist.
Mirror Lakes is not a must, it is just a nice stop in your way to Milford Sound.
Luckily, this summer, the South Island was fortunate to have amazing weather.
In New Zealand you can have 4 seasons a day, so you have to be prepared all the time. A rainproof jacket or similar and sunscreen are a must ( don't forget that New Zealand has the ozone layer ratified so it is 20% thinner than normal and sun can be dangerous )

First Lavender Farm we have been to.

We recommend to visit it in December or January so the flowers are bloomed. Some say Mid-December is best.

There are more lavender farms around this region and we are not sure if this is the best but it was an interesting experience, nothing WOW! The lavender icecream is pretty interesting. They had a wide range of lavender products and the smell is very relaxing. They even had lavender perfume.

Blue Pools - Wanaka, Mount Aspiring

Do you know why the water is blue?
In water, the sun light is scattered into the main colors. The water absorbs the other colors and the blue is reflected back into our eyes. Because of water properties, some water are bluer than other.

Near Wanaka, in Mount Aspiring, there are the Blue Pools. Amazing to take a swim into this river. But be careful! During summer, it is at around 13-18 Celsius degrees.

Worth it as it is not far from the road. Maybe 15 mins walk.

We stayed 4 nights in Te Anau and drove daily 1-2 hours to different locations. One of them was Milford Sound.
This is a must visit in this area. The only thing to think about is the weather as in this region it rains 2 out of 3 days a year. We were lucky this time.
This can be amazing also during winter but for sure you have more chances of rain.
Interestingly, here, the wind can blow up to 300 km/h.
