In Morocco, the studs or nails on doors have deep cultural and symbolic significance. Traditionally, these decorative studs served both a functional and aesthetic purpose, representing wealth, status, and protection.

Wealth & Status: The more intricate and numerous the studs, the higher the status of the family living inside. Wealthier households would often display doors with lavish designs, while simpler doors indicated modest means. This was often a physical sign to those less fortunate or travellers of who which household was in a position to provide assistance should they be in need.

Cultural Identity: The patterns created by the studs often reflect local traditions or regional designs, showcasing the craftsmanship and unique artistic identity of different Moroccan communities.

These doors are not just functional. They tell a story of heritage, belief, and artistry.

The core of the spiritual journey is dhikr — constant remembrance and ongoing invocation. Dhikr is for every moment, as through this practice, the veils are lifted and His presence is unveiled.
As Allah says in the Quran:

فَٱذْكُرُونِىٓ أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ لِى وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ
Remember Me; I will remember you. And thank Me, and never be ungrateful.
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:152)

In reverence, we commenced our spiritual sojourn by visiting the founding father of Morocco, Molay Idriss I.

Moulay Idriss I was a 5th-generation descendant of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through his daughter Fatimah and her son Hassan. Here’s the lineage:

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
1. Fatimah (daughter of the Prophet) and Ali ibn Abi Talib
2. Hassan ibn Ali (son of Fatimah and Ali)
3. Hassan Al Muthanna
4. Abdullah Al Kamil
5. Idriss I (Moulay Idriss I)

Thus, Moulay Idriss I is part of the 5th generation of the Ahl al-Bayt.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ;
“I am leaving among you two precious things and if you adhere to both of them, you will never go astray after me. They are the Book of Allah and my progeny, my Ahl al-Bayt.”

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of following both the Quran and the Prophet’s family in maintaining true guidance in Islam.

As promised...the latest addition to the Timeless Fes Tour May 2024. Shaykh Hisham Mahmoud has studied theology, hadith, legal theory, jurisprudence, ethics, Qur’an recitation, and Arabic with scholars in Morocco, Mauritania, and Egypt. He taught for more than a decade at Yale, Princeton, and Harvard. Then, he left the Academy to institute Lanturna, an educational initiative that intends to establish learning collectives to carry forward the legacies of our greatest luminaries. He continues to read with scholars & students in the United States and abroad.
