Inside of Lake Forest Cemetery there is a picturesque stairway with some hauntingly dark lore. It is a nice wooden staircase toward the back right corner of the cemetery which leads up to Ferry Hill. While the stairway appears normal this is no ordinary staircase. The rumors go that this is a special staircase, one that must be visited by every soul that is buried in the cemetery. The story is that every soul buried at the cemetery must ascend the stairway. Once the soul reaches the top of the stairs they are greeted with either a bright white light or total darkness. If they reach the top and see a bright light that is the sign that they have been welcomed into heaven. If they reach the top of the stairs and they see darkness that means that they were damned to hell. They then must turn around and descend the stairs back down to their final fate...Hell. This is why the staircase was given the name “The Stairway to Hell”. Would you be willing to test your luck on the stairway to hell?

William Montague Ferry was born September 8, 1796 in Granby, Massachusetts. Instead of following in his fathers footsteps and becoming a farmer he went to Union College in New York and graduated in 1821. He then went on to seminary and became an ordained Presbyterian minister in 1822. He founded a mission on Mackinac Island, which undoubtedly has a sorted history, and he also dabbled in selling and trade. His entrepreneurial spirit caught the eye of a man by the name of Robert Stuart and together, in 1834, they started a lumber enterprise in the area that is now Grand Haven. He continued in his ministry and also created various businesses which helped in founding what is now Grand Haven. He lived in Grand Haven till his death on December 30, 1867 at the age of 71. He is buried in Lake Forest Cemetery in Grand Haven, MI. He and his family are buried in a special section of the cemetery known as Ferry hill. Reports claim that he appears, in spiritual form, as a blueish apparition known as “the blue man” to keep watch over the hill.

Ferry Hill is a spot in Lake Forest cemetery where many members of the Ferry Family are buried. The Ferry Family is one of the founding families of the Grand Haven area. This area is considered to be one of the more active areas when it comes to paranormal experiences. People see and experience many different things atop this hill but one of the more common stories is of a blueish figure, known as “the blue man” due to his blue hue, who patrols the hilltop. The blue man is believed to be the spirit of William Ferry. William's gravestone, along with Ferry hill, has occasionally been a target of vandalism and mischief so it is believed that William shows up from time to time in order to protect the area from youths.
