The views from Stirling Castle are breathtaking. We stood on the Ladies Terrace, imagining sipping tea and watching the minions below getting on with their working day. 🫖 🏰 Then we had a lesson on making beer 🍺 A fine end to our 4 day adventure. 🤘🏼🚐🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Inverness Custom Tours

I had an interesting morning at Library of Innerpeffray and a great tour from the lovely Shirley. This is the first public lending library of Scotland - opened in 1680 by David Drummond - whose signed book collection (450) is still proudly on display today. Some of these beautiful books date back to the 1500s!! 😮 I learned so much - it’s an amazing wee place. This months theme is ‘travel’ 🌎 - not the only coincidence of the day as turns out Shirley was born in BANFF. 🫶🏼 Of course we had to get a pic of the quines together! “Ye can tak the quine oot o Banff, but ye canna tak Banff oot the quine” 🌏 📖 Inverness Custom Tours

I love this! Bouncing balls in Ullapool ⚽️🥎🏀 😆

Back In Plaque

Following the disappearance of a plaque commemorating the site of a famed ball bouncing incident at Parlett's of Ullapool (where the West Highland Free Press wasn't free) in which the ball bouncer had to pay for the ball bounced, a new memorial plaque has been unveiled commemorating the site of the plaque that commemorated the famed ball bouncing incident at Parlett's of Ullapool (where if you read it, you buy it!) in which the ball bouncer had to pay for the ball bounced.

I love this story. One of my faves to tell on Skye 🩵

I love this story. One of my faves to tell on Skye 🩵

Calum's Road is a remarkable tale from the Isle of Raasay, part of the Highlands of Scotland. The road is named after Calum Macleod, a lighthouse keeper, crofter, and postman who lived on the island. After years of failed lobbying for a road to be built to the isolated village of Arnish, Calum decided to take matters into his own hands. He wanted to reverse the depopulation of the north of Raasay and make it easier for his daughter to come home from the Isle of Skye for the weekend.
In the mid-1960s, Calum began his decade-long labor of love. With an engineering manual, shovel, pick, and wheelbarrow in hand, he almost singlehandedly constructed the stunning stretch of island infrastructure that now bears his name. This 1.75-mile stretch of single-track road was driven with limited assistance across a harsh and windswept landscape of bogs and boulders.
By the time Calum finished his road, he was in his late 60s and, along with his wife, was one of the last two inhabitants of Arnish. The amateur-built thoroughfare was finally adopted and surfaced by the local council in 1982. A memorial cairn to Calum and his legendary determination now stands at a picnic site above the road.
Over time, Calum’s road has entered into folklore, being the subject of books, films, documentaries, and even an increasingly popular Scottish folk tune. Calum's Road is a testament to one man's single-minded determination to challenge the powers-that-be. It's a story of resilience, determination, and a man's love for his island home.
Shout out to Cormac Mullally for this amazing story!
