What does it really mean to have an inclusive event?

To us, it means making sure everyone is welcomed, and no one feels excluded. You can do this from the moment attendees arrive by using clear communication, having inclusive catering options, accommodating many learning styles, and more!

23/02/2022

Do you know your attendees? Like really know them?

You can create better events when you really understand who is at your event.

Below are four simple ways to research and create better events.

1. Use Event Surveys
2. Human Library Organization
3. Braindate
4. Host Round Tables

🇫🇷 It's time for another round of . This week we're heading all the way to France!

❓Question: The hand gesture "OK" means that things are good in the states, but what does it mean in France?

Answer: Zero! This is another example of why you should use clear communication and avoid hand gestures at your events. They mean so many things to people across the globe. This is a nice example, but other gestures can come off insulting. And we never want our attendees to experience that!

🤔 What exactly is ethnocentrism? The short of it is judging other cultures based on the standards of your own culture.

Instead, try broadening your scope. Frame things from their culture, code of behaviors, and beliefs. Something that seems odd to you might be completely culturally acceptable to someone else! So try not to judge but instead look through the lens of other cultures to truly understand one another.

🌍 True or False: Multiculturalism involves embracing the uniqueness of disparate groups?

Answer: True, multiculturalism embraces views of many different cultures, ethnicities, and races.

Many minority groups have faced exclusion or unjust treatment in the past. Multiculturalism seeks to include their views and contributions to our society and respect our differences without expecting other cultures, ethnicities, or races to assimilate to the "norm" or predominant culture.

❌ Don't be this guy...

Hear us out. Hand gestures like this thumbs up, can be misinterpreted and mean many things throughout the world. In many places a thumbs up has a similar meaning to the middle finger in the U.S., and we sure don't want to be giving that to our attendees!

Instead, it's best to stick to clear communication and avoid any missteps by skipping hand gestures.

Take a guess! What do you think the most commonly used language on the internet is?

If you guessed A. English, you're correct!

English is the most commonly used language on the internet. 60% of the worldwide web is written in English. However, only 16% of the world speaks English. That's a big problem for accessibility!

To overcome this challenge, have captions and translations at your event so your global audience can enjoy and understand the event. Want to learn more? Swipe for a full chart and breakdown of the most commonly used languages brought to you by Visual Capitalist!

🤔 Codes of Behavior are a set of conventional principles and expectations that are considered binding people who are members of a particular group. Essentially, it's the "normal" behaviors, how we expect people to behave and interact in order to have a respectful and human experience.

As an event professional, we plan global events and need to take into consideration many cultures' codes of behavior and incorporate them into our events for truly welcoming experiences. This means taking into consideration how we use hand gestures, languages, and translations we offer at events, the food served, and more.
