Rainbow Trout & Dolly Varden: Near and Dear to Our Hearts

Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden are two species that are near and dear to our hearts here on the Kenai Peninsula. These fish provide an experience we can’t get enough of, and they’re a favorite among guides for several reasons.

1️⃣ The Variety: We target these fish using a wide range of techniques—drift fishing, fly fishing, and casting—all in different locations, making every trip a unique adventure.

2️⃣ The Size: Both rainbow trout and Dolly Varden can grow to impressive sizes. Kenai rainbows are known to reach over 30 inches, while Dolly Varden, with their stunning colors, also reach trophy size.

3️⃣ The Fun Factor: The fight these fish put up is incredible. Their energetic runs, jumps, and headshakes will keep you hooked and on your toes. It’s the type of fishing that will leave you grinning ear to ear.

Dolly Varden, especially, are famous for their stunning fall colors, with vibrant reds and oranges that make them even more beautiful to catch. It’s no wonder these fish are a favorite target for anglers looking for both adventure and breathtaking scenery.

This fishery is catch-and-release, ensuring these remarkable fish will continue to thrive for years to come. The amount of action we get during peak season is truly incredible, making this a bucket-list trip for anyone visiting Alaska.

If you’re ready to experience the excitement of rainbow trout and Dolly Varden fishing, join us for a day on the water—you won’t forget it!

Late July: Sockeye Madness on the Kenai River

Late July on the Kenai River is what we affectionately call Sockeye Madness! Each day, thousands of sockeye salmon surge into the river, creating unparalleled opportunities for anglers of all skill levels to experience world-class salmon fishing.

In 2024, the Kenai River saw a total run of approximately 2.96 million sockeye salmon, with a preliminary in-river sonar passage estimate of 1,926,350 fish. On peak days, tens of thousands of sockeye entered the river, providing non-stop action for eager anglers.

We target these abundant fish through both wading and boat fishing, tailoring our approach based on water conditions and angler preferences. This flexibility ensures that everyone, from novices to seasoned fishermen, can join in the excitement.

To accommodate the high demand during Sockeye Madness, we offer multiple trips each day. Our 4-hour half-day and 6-hour three-quarter-day charters are ideal during this period, as the fishing is often so intense that a full day isn’t necessary to reach your limit.

If you’re ready to experience the thrill of Sockeye Madness on the Kenai River, now is the perfect time to join us. Let’s make this fishing season one to remember!

Early July: The Peak of Summer in Southcentral Alaska

Early July is summer at its finest on the Kenai Peninsula. The days are warm and long, wildlife is abundant, and the fishing opportunities are unmatched. It’s the perfect time to experience all the beauty and excitement Alaska has to offer.

Sockeye salmon are pouring into the Kasilof River, providing thrilling opportunities for anglers looking to fill their coolers. At the same time, the larger late-run sockeye are starting their journey into the Kenai River. If you book your trip during this prime window, we’ll give you the option of fishing either river, based on where we’re finding the most success that day.

Rainbow trout are also hitting their stride, bulking up as they take advantage of the season’s bounty. Early July is when we often encounter some of the largest trout of the year. Of course, landing one of these giants is no small task, but the challenge is part of the thrill that keeps us coming back to the water.

With stunning scenery, amazing wildlife, and world-class fishing, early July is truly a special time to be here. Join us on the Kenai Peninsula and let’s share in an adventure you’ll never forget!

June Fishing Adventures on the Kenai & Kasilof Rivers

June is one of the best times to visit the Kenai Peninsula, and for good reason! From the beautiful weather to the abundant wildlife, it’s the perfect backdrop for a fishing adventure you won’t forget.

The Kenai and Kasilof Rivers are brimming with opportunities this month. On the Kasilof, hatchery king salmon are the main target, offering exciting action on the water. For trout enthusiasts, the Kenai River is the place to be—trophy rainbow trout are feeding aggressively, making June a prime time for catching these beauties.

Looking to venture into the saltwater? Ocean fishing in June is usually excellent, especially for those targeting large halibut in Cook Inlet. These giants will test your skills and reward you with incredible fillets to take home.

Beyond the fishing, the long daylight hours and stunning scenery make June a magical time. Keep an eye out for moose, eagles, and bears along the riverbanks—wildlife encounters are just part of the experience here.

Whether it’s your first time visiting or you’re a seasoned angler, June on the Kenai Peninsula offers something for everyone. Let’s get out there and make some memories!

Chasing Hatchery King Salmon on the Kasilof River

As May rolls in, the Kasilof River becomes a hotspot for anglers eager to hook into hard-fighting king salmon. Starting mid-May and running through the end of June, we target hatchery king salmon, with the peak fishing action happening during the first two weeks of June.

This fishery is unique and sustainable thanks to the hatchery kings—fish raised in state-managed hatcheries and released for harvest. These kings are genetically identical to their wild counterparts but are specifically designed to provide fishing opportunities without placing pressure on wild fish populations. It’s a win-win for anglers and conservation!

It’s worth noting that alongside the hatchery fish, a mix of wild king salmon also enters the river. Our expectation for this season is that wild fish will be catch-and-release only, helping to ensure their long-term sustainability while still offering anglers the thrill of hooking into these incredible fish.

Whether you’re chasing your first king or adding another to the books, the Kasilof River delivers an unforgettable experience. Let’s hit the water and chase some tales responsibly!
