What do 300 years of textile experience look like in a few bullet points? Here are some of our highlights.

1704: TenCate becomes part of the Netherlands textile industry
1841: TenCate starts manufacturing yarns
1960: TenCate starts developing and producing artificial turf
2001: We expand globally, and begin manufacturing in the US
2009: We become integrated, from producing yarn to installing turf systems
2019: We begin recycling turf in the Netherlands
2022: We find a US partner to recycle turf in the US
And to mark our 320th anniversary, we're removing PFAS from our manufacturing process and designing turf without PFAS.

Myth: Turf is bad for the environment.

Truth: Turf can help us solve some environmental issues facing communities across the country. For areas facing drought and water scarcity, turf requires much less water. It also doesn’t need pesticides and fertilizers which contribute to environmental pollution. Plus, Tencate has a recycling program for all turf, which minimizes waste and turns it into feedstock for new products.

Unnecessary roughness!
Use of fertilizers on athletic fields can result in nutrient runoff, which can enter nearby bodies of water. This can lead to harmful algal blooms, disrupting aquatic ecosystems, harming wildlife and jeopardizing water quality.
Luckily, artificial turf doesn’t need fertilizer. It’s safe, it requires less maintenance, and it’s ready for play without harmful chemical additives.

For some, that may seem an unlikely scenario. But in places that experience drought and limited water resources, it’s a reality. Water conservation efforts can mean playing fields get left behind.

When it comes to playing fields, natural grass may not be all it’s cracked up to be. For example, the first layer of grass that is removed to install turf contains PFAS. That’s right, PFAS are in “natural” grass. Moreover, the fertilizers and pesticides it takes to maintain natural grass fields are also potential sources of PFAS.

As of October 2023, all TenCate turf is designed without PFAS. How’s that for leveling the playing field?
