Casa de Colón - 2 star - 8.7/10

If you’re looking for your home away from home in Seville, Spain, then Casa de Colón may be just what you’re looking for. This small, family-owned hotel stands out from the crowd for its superbly central location between the cathedral and city hall, warm and friendly service, and quirky architectural features. While the hotel is steeped in history being housed in an 18th century building, its use of contemporary touches, such as brightly-coloured woven Indian stools and batik cushions give it modern vibe.

Top Tips:
• Casa de Colón is a boutique hotel and because of this, only houses a modest 17 rooms in varying size. The largest of these rooms are the grand deluxe rooms that offer the most space of all the other rooms and feature a period tub to relax in in the bathroom. The outer-facing grand deluxe rooms even come with a large balcony boasting superb views of the Cathedral and San Francisco square where you’ll find Seville’s Town Hall. If you don’t mind a smaller room, many previous guests have suggested booking one of the attic rooms. These top floor rooms boast beautiful views of the city and have their very own private, pretty terrace-solarium.
• If you are travelling with a family or a larger group of people and require extra beds, it is worth noting that extra beds are available only on prior request and subject to availability. These extra beds are also only available in the grand deluxe double rooms and the deluxe double room. If you require an extra bed, you must contact Casa de Colón directly to make a request, and unless you have written confirmation from the hotel, your extra bed is not guaranteed. For families with younger children, cots are available free of charge and extra beds are also free for under-14s (they otherwise cost €15).
• If you or anyone you’re travelling with has mobility issues, you’ll be happy to hear that Casa de Colón is wheelchair friendly. There are also two adapted rooms for disabled guests – Room 1 off the ground-floor patio, and 205, on the second floor.
• Besides the budget friendly price, the piece de resistance of Casa de Colón has to be its vibrant and central location. Whether you’re looking to delve into history, explore the culinary delights of Seville, or shop till you drop, this hotel is smack bang in the centre of everything. Everything Seville has to offer is literally at your doorstep with the cathedral just a two minute walk away, endless culinary possibilities everywhere you turn, retail heaven just a street over, Real Alcazar Park just a 5-minute walk from the property, and Plaza Nueva Square just 100 metres away. If you’re hoping to explore greater Seville during your trip, Sevilla Train Station is only a 25-minute walk away.
• You can’t visit Seville without eating your weight in tapas. Our top tapas bar picks include La Fresquita ( a lively little bar festooned with “all things Semana Santa”), Las Teresas (known for its fabulous fried hake, grilled tuna collar (morillo), and spinach with garbanzos), Casa Román (a family run tapas bar founded in 1934), and La Azotea (a tapas bar highlighting local and seasonal ingredients with Mediterranean preparations and touch of fusion).

If you’re looking for your home away from home in Seville, Spain, then Casa de Colón may be just what you’re looking for.

COMO Cocoa Island - 5 star - 9.5/10

Scattered across the private shores of Kaafu Island in South Male Atoll, Maldives, COMO Cocoa Island offers a total escape from everyday life with its minimalist luxurious style and its soft and discreet service. With 33 rooms all equipped with private terraces that allow you to slip into the warm Maldivian sea, right from your room, we wouldn’t blame you for never wanting to leave.

Top Tips
• All the rooms of COMO Cocoa Island are individual at-sea suites that branch off a wooden pier, with private sundecks, vintage-style ceiling fans, walk-in showers and roll-top bathtubs. Previous guests have raved about the overwater suites; saying that you’ll love whichever one you choose. We recommend booking either one of the split-level Dhoni Loft Suites or the one-bedroom Villas, with dining bales and outdoor showers. Guests have recommended Villa 1001 or 1003, as they face away from Cocoa Island and have the best straight-to-snorkelling sea access. Pro tip: if you’d like more privacy, pick a room with a higher number.
• If you are travelling with children, it is worth noting that COMO Cocoa Island does have a more relaxed, honeymoon vibe to it. That being said, however, all children are welcome to stay at an additional cost (4–12 year olds cost US$55 a night; 13–16, US$110 a night) and tots under 3 get to stay free. Keep in mind, you'll have to pay US$8 tax a day for each child. It’s also worth noting that babysitting services are available at US$10 per hour.
• Cocoa Island is a private island with only one resort on it, so you’re only options for food and drink are the bars and restaurants in the COMO resort. The resort’s main restaurant, Ufaa, offers a daily-changing menu of fresh-from-the-sea, plucked-from-the-branch goodness, and the poolside bar, Faru, serves up lethally tasty fruit punches or ginger mojitos. If you don’t feel like leaving your room, however, all the food and drinks from the resort’s restaurants and bars can be ordered through room service.
• Diving is definitely the main attraction at COMO Cocoa Island. Not only can you slip straight into the ocean and check out the parrotfish-patrolled waters straight from your room, you can also borrow free snorkelling gear or learn to dive at the PADI dive centre. The Maldives is home to some of the world's most spectacular scuba diving – including at the Cocoa Thila site, which just so happens to be right behind the resort.
• The Como Shambhala Retreat spa is a destination all on its own. The spa offers tempting treatments in its spa suites or, for extra opulence, in the privacy of your room. The focus here is on holistic and Ayurvedic therapy. Make sure to treat yourself during your stay and book in for a 'wellness path' course of treatments.

Scattered across the private shores of Kaafu Island in South Male Atoll, Maldives, COMO Cocoa Island offers a total escape from everyday life with its minimalist luxurious style and its soft and discreet service.

BnA Hotel Koenji - 3 star - 8.5/10

If you’re looking to explore the artistic side of Japan, the BnA Hotel chain may help you do just that. As an ambitious art hospitality project, BnA Hotel aims to support Japanese artists while providing a unique and unforgettable experience of "staying in an art piece" in Japan. Designed as a mutually beneficial ecosystem to both artists and art-lovers, BnA brought to life independent art hotel rooms, where artists receive a share of the profits from each room booking, and visitors get the chance to live inside a functional work of art.

Top Tips
• Starting out life as two proof-of-concept rooms on AirBnB, BnA is now a wildly hotel chain breathing life back into Japan’s art scene. The branch of BnA that calls Koenji home houses two wildly creative rooms that would delight any art aficionado looking to live inside artwork. While the rooms look completely different to one another, they are both very well appointed and would make a comfortable homebase for anyone looking to explore Tokyo.
• It is worth noting that because there are only two rooms at BnA Hotel Koenji (both being very popular amongst locals and visitors), we recommend booking the room well in advance of your stay. Other than that, it is also worth keeping in mind that because there is no capacity for extra beds in the rooms, the hotel is more suitable for singles or travelling couples. That being said, children are more than welcome to stay (those under 6 can even stay for free).
• During your stay, make sure to check out the FrontDesk that acts as both a literal check-in point for guests as well as a hub for local artists to “check in” with one another and share ideas. These artists can also choose to participate in the art exchange program, where botched works that might otherwise go straight in the trash are taken in and distributed back into the community. In an effort to support the small businesses of Koenji, the café sources its food from local vendors.
• The piece de resistance of this branch of the BnA Hotel chain has to be it’s neighbourhood, Koenji. Just a short train ride from Shinjuku, Tokyo’s star neighborhood is an epicentre of alternative youth culture with an expanding creative scene. Home to Tokyo’s punk scene in the 1970’s, this neighbourhood is more on the mature edgy end of the spectrum compared to the younger, more hipster parts of Tokyo. Koenji is a paradise for cheap eats, onsens, underground bars and vintage shops, so even if you’re on a tight budget, you’re sure to enjoy your stay in this retro neighbourhood.
• If you’re hoping to explore greater Tokyo during your stay, you’ll be happy to hear that the BnA Hotel Koenji is just a 2 minute walk from Koenji train station. From there it’s only short train rides to Shinjuku, Asagaya, Ogikubo, and Nishi-Ogikubo. While taxis are widely available in the city, subways and trains are the best way to get around Tokyo. Whatever transport you decide to use, a prepaid Suica or Pasmo cards, which can be bought for as little as Y1,000 at subway stations or the airport, are the best ways to pay for your fare. Pro tip: Before you leave Japan, you can bring the used card to a ticket office and they will refund the deposit, minus a small service charge.

If you’re looking to explore the artistic side of Japan, the BnA Hotel chain may help you do just that.

Chaos Hotel - 3 star - 7.9/10

If you want to find yourself in the thick of things in Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, you’re going to want to book in to Chaos Hotel. While the name may suggest otherwise, the hotel acts as a homebase to explore the hustle and bustle of the big city, as well as a refuge from it. Located along the vibrant streets of Jalan Bukit Bintang, the strategic location of Chaos Hotel puts Kuala Lumpur’s best shopping, entertainment and local attractions on a silver platter for its guests.

Top Tips
• While the majority of Chaos Hotel’s rooms are housed in a repurposed 5 storey building, they also offer penthouse suites and a large apartment that are located above the Fahrenheit 88 mall. Previous guests have mentioned that the rooms within the 5 storey building tend to be on the smaller side, so if you’re travelling as a family or with a large group of people, it’s worth booking either the penthouse suite or the apartment. For those that choose the standard rooms, be prepared for smaller living quarters and a little bit of street noise (you are in the beating heart of Kuala Lumpur, after all). Pro tip: if you’re an extremely light sleeper, bring a pair of earplugs and a sleeping mask.
• It is worth noting that guests of Chaos Hotel who are not Malaysian citizens or long term/permanent residents of Malaysia will be charged a tourism tax of RM 10 per room per night stay.
• If you’re a shopaholic or a night owl, you’ll be happy to hear that Chaos Hotel is within an easy walking distance to the city´s interesting nightlife, restaurants, shops, cultural attractions, and other points of interest in the city centre. Notable nearby attractions include the iconic Kuala Lumpur City Centre, the fashionable Pavillion Mall, the hectic nightlife in Changkat Bukit Bintang, and family fun in Aquaria KLCC.
• Getting to Chaos Hotel is incredibly easy. For those travelling light and on a budget, you can hop onto the KLIA Express (ERL) which is a non-stop airport transfer train that takes you from Kuala Lumpur International Airports (KLIA|KLIA2) to the city (KL Sentral) in just 28 minutes. From KL Sentral, you can take the monorail to the Bukit Bintang station and from there, the hotel is just a 5 minute walk away. If you are travelling with children or a lot of luggage however, we suggest taking a taxi from KL Sentral to the hotel. For those with cash to splash or who can’t be bothered with public transport, the most convenient way to get to the hotel via an airport or hotel limousine. Fare from the airport to the hotel is approximately RM 85 for a 4 passenger taxi and you will be taken directly to the hotel.
• The best way to get around Kuala Lumpur from such a central location is via public transport. For those looking for a more convenient way to get around without having to constantly line up for tickets, we recommend purchasing a Touch ‘n Go card. Not only does Touch ‘n Go provide a convenient cashless system to those who commute daily by KTM, LRT, Monorail and Rapid KL buses, it can also be used to to pay for a variety of goods and services as well as to access great offers and discounts. Pro tip: purchase your Touch n’ Go at any station or 7-eleven and top it up with as much money as you require (note: balance credit on the Touch n’ Go is not refundable).

If you want to find yourself in the thick of things in Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, you’re going to want to book in to Chaos Hotel.

Santa Marina - 5 star - 8.9/10

While Mykonos has earned its reputation as a party island meant for the young and the reckless, the Santa Marina offers refuge and showcases a quieter, more family-friendly side to the island. Only two-and-a-half kilometres south of Mykonos Town, Santa Marina’s location allows you to be close enough to the action but far away enough to enjoy the island as a family. So if you’re looking to relive the days of your youth without actually leaving the little ones at home, Santa Marina may just be the place you’ve been searching for.

Top Tips
• The Santa Marina houses a whopping 101 rooms and suites spread over several levels and it’s safe to say that there is no shortage on luxury throughout. Styled to perfection, the beautifully appointed rooms and suites are all fitted with comfortable signature beds and inviting mattresses for a memorable sleeping experience made even better by stunning views of the sea. For those travelling as a family or in larger groups, we recommend booking either the Family Sea View Suite with it’s 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms or one of the 13 private villas that have up to 4 bedrooms. For those looking for more decadence, do yourself a favour and reserve the Presidential Villa which is centred around its own private pool and beautiful views of Mykonos. Pro tips: while all the rooms are gorgeous and equally well-fitted, previous guests have recommended booking a room on a higher floor for even more spectacular views.
• While there are lifts within the hotel, it is worth mentioning that because of it’s steep steps and slopes, and lack of accessible rooms, Santa Marina is not a suitable accommodation if you or anyone you are travelling with has mobility issues.
• The piece de resistance of Santa Marina has to be it’s very own private beach. As the only private beach in the entirety of Mykonos, it provides an unrivalled space to swim and sunbathe in seclusion next to the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea. Pro tip: if you plan on lazing the day away in the sun, we suggest requesting the complimentary umbrellas, chaise-longues, and beach towels from the hotel. Be quick though, as there are only a limited number of chaise-loungers and umbrellas available.
• If you’re travelling with small children, you’ll be happy to know that Santa Marina will be happy to cater to any of their wants and needs.Firstly, the hotel has a playground that was built to cater to children from 3 years onwards and operates in a safe, specially configured outdoor area. On top of that, kids can also enjoy the waters of the Colonial swimming pool area, with a specially designed section for parents to enjoy the sun and refreshments from the bar while keeping an eye on the little ones. Lastly, the private beach of Santa Marina Resort & Villas features shallow, crystal clear waters and golden sand for the little ones to play all day long.
• After a long day of lounging by the two sizable infinity pools and sandy private beach, why don’t you treat yourself to a well-deserved retreat to Gingko spa? While Mykonos has earned its reputation as a party island meant for the young and the reckless, the Santa Marina offers refuge and showcases a quieter, more family-friendly side to the island.

• If you so happen to be around the Henry Jones Art Hotel on a Saturday, you’re in luck! Australia’s largest outdoor market, the Salamanca Market, happens just a few minutes’ walk from its front steps. You’ll find the market by following the sounds of enthusiastic buskers in Salamanca Place and the smell of fresh morning coffee brewing. Here you’ll find the biggest selection of locally made products including hand-worked glass, stylish clothing, bespoke jewellery, organic produce, artworks, bath and body care, ceramics and leather goods, handcrafted cheeses, breads, wines and spirits, and delicious hot foods.

São Lourenço do Barrocal - 5 star - 9.5/10

If you’re looking to get your little ones away from their electronics and into nature, São Lourenço do Barrocal, an hour and a half away from Lisbon may be just the thing you’ve longed for. Set in the foothills of the medieval village of Monsaraz and nearby the Alqueva lake, this converted farmhouse encourages its little visitors to discover and explore the great outdoors with fun family-friendly activities like horseback riding, treasure hunting and stargazing. With impeccably helpful and genuinely friendly staff, you and your family will feel more like friends than visitors.

Top tips
• São Lourenço do Barrocal is made up of 24 rooms (including 2 suites). All these rooms are spacious and decorated in muted colours of natural woods, white and duck-egg blue, and are accented by the rust-red floor tiles that run throughout. If you were hoping to cook during your stay or are maybe just looking for some extra room, we recommend booking any of the cottages (that come in 1, 2, and 3 bedrooms) as they all come with spacious living rooms and a fully equipped kitchen. If you’re looking for a quieter stay, previous guests have mentioned booking a room that is further away from the reception and spa for some peace and quiet.
• If you’re coming from Lisbon, you have 2 options to get you to São Lourenço do Barrocal; by train or via car. Trains from Lisbon to Evora (the closest station to the hotel) take around one hour and 45 minutes, but is is worth noting that the hotel is around 50 kilometres from the station. Because the hotel is in a relatively rural location, we highly recommend hiring a car for the duration of your stay. This will allow you more time and freedom to explore the Alentejo area at your leisure.
• If you are travelling as a family with older children, we recommend booking either the 2 bedroom or 3 bedroom cottages as interconnecting rooms and extra beds are not available. If however, your child is under the age of 4 there are small cots available from the hotel. These can be added to your rooms on request and at no additional cost. Pro tip: if you do require one of these cots during your stay, we recommend letting the hotel know well in advance since there are only a limited number of cots available at one time.
• For the avid wine enthusiast, you’ll be excited to hear that the winery of São Lourenço do Barrocal is an integral part of the hotel and the estate's regeneration. Thanks to region's dry, hot summer days, cool nights and resulting slow-growing grapes, the winery is known for producing first-class single-estate wines that have a great depth of flavour. Do yourself a favour and take your time to visit the winery and enjoy a wine tasting with views across the landscape right till the foothills of Monsaraz.
• Most Lisbonites escape to the region to get away from the hecticity of metropolitan living and escape into the country. Take a leaf out of their book and strap on your walking shoes for a good hike around the São Lourenço do Barrocal estate. The hotel has painstakingly identified many of the best walking routes that run alongside Lake Alqueva (a man-made lake with around 440 verdant islands), so before you head out make sure to ask the concierge for one that suits you best.

If you’re looking to get your little ones away from their electronics and into nature, São Lourenço do Barrocal, an hour and a half away from Lisbon may be just the thing you’ve longed for.
