Santona Baptised in Brest!

This Saturday, March 23, 2024 in Brest, Brittany Ferries celebrated the blessing and baptism of its latest child, the Santoña.

Blessed by Christian Bernard, Episcopal Vicar of the Diocese of Quimper and Leon, the Santoña was then baptized according to the centuries-old tradition, with the tossing of the bottle of Champagne by its godmother, Mrs. Marie-Hélène Roué.

An emotional moment that strengthens the bond between the ship and its sailors.

Brittany Ferries announces a modification and major modernization of the hull of the Pont-Aven vessel. As part of the ship's annual technical shutdown, the hull was enlarged with the addition of an extension along the length of the waterline at the stern. This expansion lengthens the ship's hull by approximately three meters and improves its hydrodynamic performance. (Release: 23/01/24)

Technical improvement for better environmental performance.
Environmentally, the hydrodynamic characteristics of ships play an essential role for shipping companies. In fact, reducing drag on the hull when traveling on water reduces fuel consumption and therefore leads to a reduction in atmospheric emissions. This is why a modern design on a hull is fundamental for Brittany Ferries' new ships, such as the Santoña and the Salamanca. Entering service in 2004, the most suitable option for the Pont-Aven is to add length to the waterline. These improvement works make it possible to reduce the fuel consumption of Pont-Aven by around 10%.
Modeling then experiments to find the right combination
" The improement project began with analyzes carried out by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique design office via numerical simulations on fluid dynamics. The engineers first looked at the bulb of the bow to the front of the ship. A dozen proposed modifications were submitted, but all revealed little benefit in terms of fuel savings, so it was necessary to look to the stern. Investigating modification possibilities from the stern, we observed much more promising results during the simulations ", explains Brice Robinson, Studies and Projects Manager at Brittany Ferries . “ With the addition of an extension to the waterline length, the data showed a significant reduction of 10%, which is very interesting .”

The second step consisted of concretely verifying this theory. Tests took place in a 300 meter long basin at the Hamburg Ship Model Basin in Hamburg. Brittany Ferries' original plans for the ship made it possible to build a 7-meter model of the Pont-Aven hull with modifications to the stern. The tests carried out focused on three different shapes which all confirmed the data from the numerical simulations. “ We saw an immediate improvement when the first model was launched ,” adds Brice Robinson . " Lengthening the hull immediately changed the wake by reducing recirculation at the transom, thereby reducing hydrodynamic drag around the stern. This should be even more significant when we actually apply it to the vessel. " identified the most effective form, the work took place this month.
Brittany Ferries has also turned to Wärtsilä who is studying the possibility of improving the propeller design. This could lead to a further improvement of around 5% on Pont-Aven.
