g a male friend, boyfriend or husband.

“Moving among big mountains and climbing in the back country requires equal parts skill and self-confidence,” says Sunny. “Women are just as capable of acquiring the prerequisite skills, but there aren’t as many female role-models and mentors out there to help impart both skills and confidence.”

Her personal journey quickly became rooted in a new purpose to show women they are capable of simply putting themselves out there.'

What do you think those packs weigh!

Being in shape for mountaineering means being being fit for strenuous hiking and backpacking. Distances in mountaineering are often shorter (when compared to pure backpacking), but the terrain tends to be steep, slow, and the packs heavy - because you need climbing gear in addition to all your backpacking gear.

Depending on the mountain and the season of a climbing expedition, mountaineers are often looking at pack weights between 40 and 50 lbs. Have you ever carried that heavy?

Can you imagine sleeping under these stars, and amidst these giant snowcapped peaks?
🌟
This is Ishinca Basecamp in the Cordillera Banca of Peru. It's a full day's hike from the closest road, but thanks to donkey support our teams can travel light while approaching this dreamy camp that's perched at 14,000ft.
👀
If you're curious about mountaineering on glaciated peaks and in international destinations, the Cordillera Blanca is the ultimate destination for your first high altitude expedition.

We love seeing these smiles and selfies from the trail! This is our Three Passes & Everest Basecamp team, who have now been on trail deep in the Himalayas for the better part of the month, and just returned to Kathmandu.

Bonus: who can tell us the names of the peaks in the background?

Day 22 🥂🤩🙌

Wow! Who knew time could go so fast - especially when it involves crossing 3 high Himalaya passes, getting to Everest Base Camp, going up Kala Patthar and even sneaking in a 6000m peak! Phew.

What an amazing team that took on the AWExpeditions - For Women, By Women Nepal adventure! Phunjo Lama and I couldn’t be more proud of the team for digging deep in all manner of situations, confronting fears and doing hard things all the while - simply being bad*ss.

Today we held our collective breaths in Lukla and fortunately made the last direct flight out to Kathmandu. First came food, and then came hotel relaxation. Everyone will begin to head back to their own lives shortly - however it was an absolute pleasure and privilege to have spent the passed 23 days with this group! Thank you also to everyone who followed via socials - the support was felt by all 🙂

What's going on here?

Or, to ask differently: when was the last time you got to practice self-arrest? If you're answer is 'never' or 'it's been a while', consider joining one of our 2025 mountaineering clinics on Mount Baker. In 4-5 days you'll get to learn and practice the fundamental skills of mountaineering, travel across glaciated terrain on a rope team, AND try your hand at summiting iconic Komo Kulshan aka Mount Baker.

There isn't another country that is as legendary among mountaineers and trekkers as Nepal, and while Everest Basecamp has turned into a bucket-list goal for many travelers we know that there are still many trails less traveled; including our immersive Three Passes expedition.

The year may be slowly nearing its end, but that doesn't mean that our expeditions are winding down - on the contrary! Preparations for our 2024-2025 all-women Aconcagua teams are in full swing, as our first team of the season will congregate in Mendoza right after Christmas.

Do you know someone who's climbed Aconcagua, and/or have you been to the giant of the Andes yourself?

It is almost time for our all-women Nepal expedition on the Three Passes Route to Everest Basecamp to kick off, and we couldn't be more excited! Stay tuned for updates from the trail as our team explores the magnificent valleys and passes of the Khumbu under the leadership of the one and only Jeanette McGill and amazing Phunjo Lama.

Denali on our mind...

No, we're not (yet) offering an all-women Denali expedition, though plans are in motion for 2026, wohoo!! In the meantime, we want to draw your attention to an all-women Denali expedition offered by Alaska Mountaineering School and co-guided by AWExpeditions friend Nadine Lehner.

If Denali is on your bucket list, check out this opportunity - or start training and saving for 2026, which is when we here at AWE hope to offer our first women-only Denali climb!

The Story Behind AWExpeditions

This 2016 NBC article provides a behind-the-scenes look at the inspiration behind AWExpeditions.
