“Moving among big mountains and climbing in the back country requires equal parts skill and self-confidence,” says Sunny. “Women are just as capable of acquiring the prerequisite skills, but there aren’t as many female role-models and mentors out there to help impart both skills and confidence.”

Her personal journey quickly became rooted in a new purpose to show women they are capable of simply putting themselves out there.'

The year may be slowly nearing its end, but that doesn't mean that our expeditions are winding down - on the contrary! Preparations for our 2024-2025 all-women Aconcagua teams are in full swing, as our first team of the season will congregate in Mendoza right after Christmas.

Do you know someone who's climbed Aconcagua, and/or have you been to the giant of the Andes yourself?

It is almost time for our all-women Nepal expedition on the Three Passes Route to Everest Basecamp to kick off, and we couldn't be more excited! Stay tuned for updates from the trail as our team explores the magnificent valleys and passes of the Khumbu under the leadership of the one and only Jeanette McGill and amazing Phunjo Lama.
👀
Have you been to Nepal, or is it on your list? Because, really - if you love mountains, it's one or the other. We here at AWE love Nepal, and we're excited to finally see our first expedition since before the pandemic back in the Himalayas.

Denali on our mind...

No, we're not (yet) offering an all-women Denali expedition, though plans are in motion for 2026, wohoo!! In the meantime, we want to draw your attention to an all-women Denali expedition offered by Alaska Mountaineering School and co-guided by AWExpeditions friend Nadine Lehner.

If Denali is on your bucket list, check out this opportunity - or start training and saving for 2026, which is when we here at AWE hope to offer our first women-only Denali climb!

Desert backpacking season is upon us....

This past week, not one, not two, but THREE all-women teams crushed it on sold-out adventures—hiking the iconic Paria Canyon and traversing Rim-to-Rim across the legendary Grand Canyon.

While we don’t run many women-only backpacking trips (because, let’s face it, mountaineering is our first love), when we do, they fill up fast. So if you’ve been dreaming of an unforgettable adventure, now’s your chance—reserve your spot for Spring or Fall 2025!

Did you know? In addition to our regularly scheduled all-women climbs and adventures, we also lead private & custom bookings for many of our expeditions.
👀
Last month, we had the pleasure of leading an all-women veteran team to the summit of Kilimanjaro, and next year we've already got times held for several private custom expeditions! From Mount Baker to Aconcagua, and from the Cordillera Blanca in Peru to Kilimanjaro: let us know where and when your team or group of friends wants to go, and we'll make it happen for you. How? Simply send us an email to [email protected] and we'll take it from there!

PS -- we're a women's expedition company, and we also 100% welcome men on any private trip!

Phunjo Lama - you've heard her name, because Phunjo is the fastest woman on Everest blazing from basecamp to the very top of the world in only 14 and a half hours. And we couldn't be more excited to announce that she has agreed to guide our all-women Three Passes Trek to Everest Basecamp this fall!!

Under the capable leadership of dream-team Jeannette McGill (a long-time friend of AWE's and the first South African woman to climb Manaslu) and the amazing Phunjo Lama, our all-women Everest Basecamp team will spend the better part of November exploring Nepal and immersing themselves in the Khumbu's lesser traveled trails.

Are you ready for a life-changing adventure with incredible company? Join us in Nepal this fall - we only have two spots left available for this one-of-a-kind expedition.

Our 2024 all-women expedition team reached Ishinca Basecamp yesterday - a slice of mountaineering heaven in the middle of the Cordillera Blanca.

Perched at 14,400ft above sea level in a stunning setting, the Ishinca Valley makes for an incredible location to acclimatize, practice skills, and get ready for summit attempts on the surrounding 18,000ft+ snowcapped peaks.

If you’d like to find out more about this itinerary, check out the link below. Our 2025 team is already 50% booked up.

A sneak peak into our recent week-long Komo Kulshan (Mount Baker) Mountaineering Course, and high praise for it too:

''Every detail of the trip on and off the mountain was thoughtfully planned. I especially loved the team dinners before and after setting off for the expedition. You'll meet some incredible people (both clients and guides) with AWE and develop trust within your team.
When you're pushing your physical and mental limits on the mountain, that trust is everything. With AWE you're not just another person being led up the mountain. You actually learn about mountaineering and form meaningful connections to people and place.''
👀
Thank you Isabelle for this wonderful review. We've got one more Mount Baker departure on the calendar for this summer, and dates for 2025 will be dropping soon - is 2025 going to be your year?

The Paria Canyon Backpack, one of our all-women Stepping Stone offerings, is a week-long backpacking adventure with many consecutive days of water hiking.

https://awexpeditions.org/trips/paria-backpack/

If you've ever been curious about how water hiking actually works, check out this post from our local outfitting partner Dreamland Safari Tours.

The best shoes for water hiking are synthetic, fast drying trail shoes. Avoid sandals, GoreTex, or leather. Note that water shoes are NOT good for water hiking.

Guess where!
👀
Hint - we are returning here this fall for the first time since before the pandemic, and while it involves high altitude up to 18,000ft there is NO roped climbing or glacier travel involved in this once-in-a-lifetime adventure... who knows which expedition we're talking about??

Guess where we’ll be in just under a month!
👀
For the third year in a row we have an all-women team headed to the stunning Cordillera Blanca in Peru, to learn/practice fundamental mountaineering skills, try their hand at ice climbing, and get a chance at not one but *two* glaciated high altitude peaks: Ishinca and Tocllaraju.
🏔️
This 2-week expedition starts and finishes in Lima, Peru, and it’s one of our guide favorites. Spots for the 2025 are already filling up, too - if this adventure is calling your name, take a look now: https://awexpeditions.org/trips/peru/

The Story Behind AWExpeditions
