Gerrit Dou, el maestro holandés de la pintura de género molía él mismo sus colores para que éstos alcanzaran su máxima pureza. También fabricaba sus propios pinceles. Su estudio, sobre el canal de Leiden Galgewater, era grande y alto, pleno de luz natural. Gerrit Dou, el genio de Leiden, protegía del polvo su paleta, pinceles y colores guardándolos bajo llave. Siempre esperaba que el polvo se asentara en su estudio, antes de empezar a pintar.
