Maine Open Lighthouse Day Saturday, September 12, 2015... Maine Open Lighthouse Day The U.S. This year we expect another fun family event.

Coast Guard, the State of Maine and the American Lighthouse Foundation are pleased to announce the third annual Maine Open Lighthouse Day. Last year, thousands of people visited lighthouses along the Maine coast in the largest effort of its kind in the nation. The partnership with the Coast Guard, State of Maine and American Lighthouse Foundation is intended to increase awareness of Maine’s maritime heritage and the rich history of its lighthouses and lighthouse keepers.

Here is a list of optics presently in use at Maine’s lighthouses.

At the present time, nine Maine lighthouses still have a VRB-25 rotating beacon gracing their lanterns.

During a recent visit to Cape Elizabeth Light (east tower), I took time to admire the VRB-25 rotating beacon inside the lantern of this stately sentinel – appreciating its glowing presence, incandescent light source and yeoman’s service to mariners.

During Maine Open Lighthouse Day at Owls Head Light...

Maine children’s author, Angeli Perrow will be signing copies of her popular book, Lighthouse Dog to the Rescue, today — Saturday, September 14th, from 1pm to 4pm in the keeper’s house at Owls Head Light.

“Lighthouse Dog to the Rescue is about Spot, a remarkable spaniel who lived at Owls Head Light with the keeper’s family in the 1930s,” says Angeli Perrow. “He learned to ring the fog bell to greet passing boats and came to the rescue of the Matinicus mailboat one stormy winter night.”

Stop by to meet Angeli and purchase a signed copy of her book!

While on site, be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to tour Owls Head Lighthouse, which will be open to visitors for Maine Open Lighthouse Day, as will the exhibits and gift shop inside the keeper’s house at the light station.
