On this day in 1882, King Kalākaua hosted about 100 guests at a lūʻau at his Pualeilani residence in Waikīkī. The property, surrounded by coconut palms, groves of kiawe trees, and Bermuda grass, featured a dance floor set up on the lawn. Guests arrived at 2 p.m. and started the festivities with a few dances before enjoying a grand lūʻau. Among the dishes served were poi, pond mullet in tī leaves, chicken salad, roast pig, soft crabs, and more.

Later, cabbies, expressmen, and others were invited to join the feast, expressing great satisfaction with the “courteous and hospitable treatment,” as they typically had to wait outside with empty stomachs. Dancing continued well into the late afternoon.

On June 4, 1884, over 30 ladies responded to a request by Queen Kapiʻolani for a meeting with her at ʻIolani Palace.

She gave a short address in ʻOlelo Hawaiʻi, which was translated by Colonel Iaukea.

According to the Pacific Commercial Advertiser: “She told of the sad condition of the poor lepers, who were in need of many things not provided by law, and appealed to the sympathy and aid of those present.”

The ladies agreed to give a benefit garden party on the Palace grounds. Committees were formed and responsibilities assigned. At their second meeting on June 10, the committee decided to hold the event on June 26.

Polynesian Voyaging Society CEO Nainoa Thompson today announced a major change to the Moananuiākea Voyage sail plan. In the wake of the devastating fires on Maui, Hōkūleʻa will return home from San Diego, California in late December, before continuing on the circumnavigation of the Pacific.

Vintage 1960s: Great Buddha at Lahaina Jodo Mission, on the Valley Isle of Maui's west coast. The temple was established in 1912 and stood on its current location since 1932. In 1968, the temple had a 12-foot-tall statue of the Amida Buddha (pictured here) installed for the centenary of the first Japanese people coming in Hawaii.

Happy Birthday, Queen Lili’uokalani.

Hauʻoli lā hānau to Hawaiʻi’s beloved Queen Lili‘uokalani!

This year marks the 183rd birthday of Lydia Lili‘u Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamaka‘eha, beloved queen and last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. Born to ali‘i nui Anale‘a Keohokālole and high chief Caesar Kapa‘akea, Lili‘u was given immediately after birth to Laura Konia and Abner Pākī, the parents of our founder, Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Bishop, to be raised in the honored tradition of hānai.

Outside of her political role in Hawaiian history, Lili‘u was an extraordinary musician and prolific composer of Hawaiian music. Prior to her passing in 1917 she established a trust in her name as an enduring legacy to the people of Hawaiʻi. Today, remains an important social service organization working towards developing healthy children, strong families, and caring communities throughout Hawaiʻi.
