I thought today would be one of the busiest shopping days before Christmas so, as I’m at an age when nostalgia is kicking in, I took a run out to the peace and tranquility of the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum Christmas event. Lots of great memories of my first house in Belfast with its tiny kitchen and outside toilet in the backyard, the Belfast sink and the big cast iron bath with feet that wouldn’t look out of place here. Also seeing these tiny two up, two down houses made my tiny house feel huge when I got home! Suited me much better than a day in a Shopping Centre and it had everything from pigs in muck, mulled wine, Jesus, Mary and Joseph and even the two wee donkeys.

Peaceful Winter Soltice. The light is coming back! There was a time when I would’ve been wanting to be up a mountain or out in a forest to celebrate winter solstice but this year I’m quite happy to sit by the twinkly lights, Rudolph and the fire with a big bowl of winter stew. It’s the thought that counts!

Alone doesn’t equal lonely. Just change it to flying solo and it sounds so much more adventurous. Going solo to the pictures is still a tough one for some people but it’s bliss. You can go exactly when you feel like it, don’t have to negotiate about which row or seat to sit in, stuff your face if you want to and cry big snottery tears without any embarrassment. Wicked was fabulous! A wee cocktail in the handbag helps too… sticking to the green theme.

A day out in Newcastle for an unusual photoshoot! Cryptic clue: All was revealed but will not be revealed yet…
Afterwards I spotted a quick window of blue sky for a walk up along the Glen River but I only got a bit further than last time as the wind got fierce but every little counts.

Quiet time now between trips so just walking, catching up with friends and dreaming of the next adventure. Enjoying watching Christmas preparations but trying to avoid the mad spending rush that is going on. Best present is still your time.

The end of an era this week with the shocking news of the death of David Doyle who was the key driver behind the NI Walking Photography group. He will be sorely missed by many as he regularly led herds of us all over the country in everything from roasting heat to snowstorms. When his announcement of a walk appeared there was usually a rush to get in the first 20 or 30 people who could go along. The camping adventures were legendary and there wasn't that much rest at the wonderful Shepherds Rest Caravan Park & Campsite when we were there! The group was perfect for me as there was time for a good hike but also time for chat and photos which many hiking groups frown on. The group has thrived under his leadership and hopefully the friendships made will carry it on in his memory. Deepest sympathies to all David's family and friends. His FB header seems very appropriate.

Today of all days involved a long drive to Cookstown. The poor countryside is saturated and after quaking going up a kilometre long drive with huge creaking trees we were huddling in a freezing but fabulous huge country house. We even discovered it was warmer to stand outside than inside in the chill. But home safe and planning to hibernate tomorrow.

No snow here today but very chilly. Just lovely autumn colours.

Beautiful day out in the Mournes. I stayed low for the sunshine as it was freezing and misty on up at the top. I did the Granite Trail again and finished up in O’Hara’s for a half price feast. Excellent day trip.

Horrific weather news from Spain today as the flooding has devastated large areas and caused chaos and destruction. Pure good luck got me home before this hit and after two weeks of perfect sunshine. We were complaining about getting soaked boarding the plane and the bumpy turbulence on take off but had no idea this was arriving. My poor friend drove back to the green circle on Sunday night and is hunkered down until it clears.

Home!! I still have the Alhambra photos to post but luckily I had my Ryanair flight booked for Monday evening and I got home late last night.
Longer version: Sunday and Monday were about 13° there so as cold as here and when I work up yesterday the mountains round Granada were totally covered in snow. I was happy enough because it meant I didn’t look odd wearing so many clothes as they wouldn’t all fit in my wee case. Heaviest shirt, body warmer, raincoat and scarf and my pockets stuffed full. I still ended up with a 3kg overflow bag! Too many nice clothes shops. I flew to Spain with EasyJet and my usual wee backpack that fits under the seat but my flight home was with Ryanair. I went home before the half term break as flights triple in price when that starts. Luckily when I was checking in I noticed the Ryanair under seat bag size and it has shrunk! Only 40cm by 25cm by 20cm compared to EasyJet’s 45cm x 36cm x 20cm! Taking my backpack on board would have cost me over €60 but it was sold out or if I had just discovered it at the airport it was €75! So I had to pay another £23 to check it in. I see today that I was lucky to get home at all. Transport strikes on Monday, Malaga airport closed due to storms and worse to come. A lucky end to two lovely weeks away.

Granada. Next was a day split into two very different sides of the same coin. First Granada Cathedral, another one built on top of the city's main mosque after the reconquest of Granada. It was started in in 1518 in the centre of the old Muslim Medina so the narrow warren of streets around it are full of fascinating souks and bazaar like shops and tea shops. Ornate doesn’t cover its decor!
Second was the Inquisition exhibition advertised as having “ancient instruments of torture, and wonderful views of the Alhambra”. It was disturbing, gruesome and most horrific was how shockingly recent some of it is and how little has changed in many places. Human nature at its worst.
