Very nice visit with cooking class at just outside of Cabo San Lucas. We made Oaxaca-style tamales (different than my family’s Jalisco style) as well as a spicy chile arbol salsa and rosemary-garlic guacamole. I learned how you can tell if your molcajete is genuine lava rock vs. concrete - grind the tecolote (like the mortar from a mortar and pestle) into the empty bowl - u should get a fine white powder on the rounded end with a smoky aroma - remnants of the volcanic smoke (which also imparts a subtle smoky flavor into the food prepared in the molcajete). Thank you for the wonderful birthday gift!!!

While sailing through the Iron Gates Gorge, we passed a couple of these “Balloon Houses” which functioned as a traffic control for ships passing through the narrowest parts of the Gorge. The position of the “Balloon” signaled to ship captains which watercraft had the right of way. This point of the Danube is bordered by Serbia and Romania.

#WaybackWednesday - Whimsical animated Christmas “Putz” or Village displayed onboard the AmaWaterways AmaMagna during our recent “Gems of Southeast Europe” River Cruise. The tradition of a miniature Christmas village started in 1500s Germany as a way to represent a Nativity Scene. In this context “putz” is loosely translated as “to decorate.”

I’m in DC for an event tonight - when I’m here I enjoy visiting someplace new to me. Yesterday it was the Library of Congress with its beautiful reading room, and a couple of great exhibits. An original Gutenberg Bible is on display in the Great Hall. The photography collection exhibit included the first known photo of Lincoln as well as a “hats as architecture” at New York’s Guggenheim. The exhibit about memories included a gorgeous hooked rug depicting the artist’s mother reading a book in a cherry tree. During the walk over I strolled past the Supreme Court and Capitol. Washington is in full bloom!
