About MozartWear

If Picasso represents art as an icon then certainly everyone recognizes Mozart as the guy for classical music — but does it go any further than that? Yes, unfortunately, we do. Recently I was talking to someone who didn’t know who Mahler was, or Leonard Bernstein (how quickly they forget..). So many great composers really could have been painters with their sound colors so incred

ibly visual like Debussy, Mahler — really all of them. Maybe if we just packed it all away into sound museums there would be a world of people who would go and watch holographic concerts. There could be the Brahms Experience, the Hall of Haydn, the Talking Bartok — well you get where this goes. Keeping classical music alive is a labor of love — 50% labor and 50% love. You can’t have one without the other. So where do we go from here? We start by incorporating or re-incorporating the words of classical music into the language of the general public. This will generate a natural curiosity to experience the music. Historically language is the technology that stimulates thought—this is where we want to go—into the minds of the many, that is where the awareness of classical music needs to go in order to continue to expand and survive into the future of culture. Take it to the streets! See you there!

[Coming soon: Mozart - the magazine for everyone in classical music]

Introducing Mozart’s List, a haven for doing business in the field of classical music. In an age where we are all so very connected and connectable, it occurred to me that there should be a place like Mozart’s List that would be devoted to the needs, wants, and connections that make up the virtual landscape of all things classical music. I’ve always been aware of the fact that classical music falls outside of the mainstream and for the most part exists as a marginalized art form in a world determined to be controlled by mass popular culture. With so many people working in the field of classical music, including in the support service areas, it is remarkable that we still find ourselves constantly searching for the things we need in so many disparate places (i.e. eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, and all the many places we search and hunt for the less findable things like places to live and work that are friendly to classical music), and more often than not end up finding the things we need through friends and social networking. Mozart’s List is a new idea for creating a community classified marketplace for classical music—a veritable farmer’s market of things and services that cater to the classical music community. Everyone who has an interest in classical music from the enthusiast to the professional can participate in a commercial zone that is focused on building a healthier classical music community. List employment opportunities and events of all kinds. Create comprehensive regional networks of businesses, services, and event listings to support any and every local classical music community in the world. In addition to a classified marketplace, Mozart’s List is a business listing site where everyone in the field of classical music can have a listing! The ultimate classical music business directory, free to list and free to use! Search for your business and claim or create your listing! Welcome!!! Spread the word! Kathy Geisler

People News: Beethoven Obsession

In 1888, Bruckner was present when Beethoven's body was exhumed and relocated. When officials opened the coffin, Bruckner grabbed Beethoven's skull, held it, and kissed it. He was then forcibly removed. Bruckner later thought that one of his eyeglass lenses may have fallen into the coffin with Beethoven.

In 1805, when Beethoven was writing the Appassionata, The Industrial Revolution was well underway in Great Britain and Germany, while Austria was making a treaty with Napoleon. This work is a lasting testament of that world as seen through the lens of Beethoven. Happy 254!

If we think about Bach as a kind of marker in music, as in BB/AB (before & after), it’s interesting to note that Beethoven was born only 20 years after the death of Bach. Imagine all that innovation that happened in those few years, not the least of whom came Mozart, born only half a dozen years AB.

“I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that"—the famous quote from 2001: A Space Odyssey, the film that brought Ligeti’s music into a mainstream it was never intended for—not to mention Ligeti’s influence on Radiohead. Relevance found Ligeti.

Xenakis, the polymath, poured all of his art and science into a caldron and concocted a stirring and otherworldly expression. He anticipated a world so abstract as to be a newly discovered species interacting in its own native language. His was a true art of the avant garde.
