THAILAND 🇹🇭 WEEK
Our Thai destination today lies in the Gulf of Thailand off the East Coast, it is part of the Surat Thani Province but it was granted self governing municipality status. It is the second largest Island 🏝 in Thailand after Phuket. It is the Cosmopolitan melting pot Island of Koh Samui. It's name is often shortened to Samui. Interestingly enough, this Island was an isolated self sufficient community with no connection to the mainland and in fact had no roads until the seventies. It has come a long way since then.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:-
It is well known for palm - fringed 🌴 beaches, coconut 🥥 groves and dense mountainous rainforest, luxury resorts and posh spas. Plus ➕ its landmark 12m Tall Golden Buddha statue at Wat Phra Yai Temple is located on a tiny island connected to Samui by a causeway. It is also easily viewed from the air when you either arrive or depart.
HOW TO GET THERE?
It has a private modern eco friendly and delightful airport built by Bangkok Airways which for long time was the only Thai airline that provided services to the Island, but in recent times Thai Airways was also allowed to fly in and there are some regional airlines with services as well. Airport fees are high at this Airport, due to a lack of competition making flights more expensive than elsewhere in the area.
However there are several ferries ⛴ that connect to the Island from the mainland and other nearby Islands in the area. I arrived there with the comfortable and very scenic ferry from Surat Thani on the mainland and it took just under 2 hours and was very inexpensive and I would highly recommend it, if budget is an issue and you don't mind those extra hours flying to Surat Thani instead. It feels more like an excursion than an actual ferry trip in my opinion.
HOW TO GET AROUND:-
There are public buses, privately owned songthaews, motorbike 🛵
taxis. Car 🚙 Rental is also easily available and it well worth renting a vehicle for a day or two to drive around the Island to experience its spectacular beauty at your own pace and go off the beaten track here and there. The central part of Koh Samui is mostly tropical jungle. The various lowland and coastal areas are connected by Route 4169 encircling the Island, many other concrete roads branch off from this Route to service other areas.
ACCOMMODATION:-
The number and range of accommodation types on Samui is quite staggering as is the levels of luxury as the wealthiest of holidaymakers will be totally at home here, as the villas and resorts are in a class of their own with many International brands and chains having properties here. But middle of the road and budget travellers need not fear, as there are plenty of great value and inexpensive places as well, including Beachfront Bungalows which are totally charming! Families, couples, solo and LGBTQ+ travellers will all find their groove here.
SEASONS TO VISIT:-
It has a tropical monsoon climate. It is generally warm and humid throughout the year and has an overall drier climate than elsewhere in Thailand.
The Dry Season is December to February.
The heaviest Rain months is October and November. The rest of the year has brief showers.
WHAT TO DO:-
There is so much to see and do and it will really depend on what you enjoy most or what works for you, so that you make the right decisions where to go or stay.
The area with the most hustle and bustle and most exciting nightlife, shopping and entertainment is around Chaweng Beach. Lamai Beach is lively and more relaxed. Maenam is a tropical beach paradise and in fact there are many other beaches that will blow your mind. Bophut's Fishermen's Village has a timeless feel and another wonderful area to stay, wander around or just experience during the day or night.
You can also use Samui to either explore or sightsee nearby Islands on day trips or as a gateway to stay on them for longer, as they deserve attention as well. Koh Phagnan (known for its full moon parties and Beauty), Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan (unbelievable rustic charm, scenic with a serene atmosphere) are worth visiting as well and are north of the Island.
I will also highlight these attractions that should also not be missed and must be seriously considered when putting together your Samui schedule depending on your requirements and personal preferences.
Nightlife and Entertainment:-
ArkBar: Party with world renowned DJs and be dazzled by Fire 🔥 Dancers, Shows and dining and dancing on the beach. It is also a Resort and I stayed here. It is an all day party place in the heart of the action with multiple pools and still incredibly chilled. Other vibrant entertainment places, I would recommend is:-
Soi Green Mango, Coco Trans, Old Street Bar, Central Lamai Beer Bars Plaza, Nikki Beach and a few of the Lady Boy Shows and Cabarets.
Sightseeing and Attractions worth checking out:- Ang Thang Marine Park, Nu Muang Waterfall, Secret Buddha Garden, Pink Elephant 🐘 Samui Water 💦 Park and there are also quite a few Viewpoints around the Island that will really enchant you with their panoramic views - my favourite is Lamai Viewpoint. The town of Nathon on the west Coast is the original Capital and houses government offices and has a more authentic local flavour.
Koh Samui is unique among Thailand's Islands, and while it is slightly more expensive than the rest of the country, its rewards are well worth it and it still does maintain a broad appeal for everyone. It has a distinctive relaxed atmosphere that sets it apart. I for one, cannot wait to go back and explore even further!
