This is Kyoto…one of the most photographed shrines in Japan, Fushimi Inari, famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, dedicated to the Shinto God of rice. Just walking through this sacred space, dodging the throngs of visitors, takes you back to another era.

Strolling through Higashiyama in the evening was a delight. It is one of the best preserved historic districts where you can experience traditional old Kyoto. Bypassing the daily crowds was a key to be able to enjoy the tranquility of the neighborhood. You can spot a geisha or two getting ready to entertain their clients with conversation, music, and ceremony. Ending the evening with great Italian inspired food was a nice departure.

Chuzenji Temple (中禅寺, Chūzenji) stands on the eastern bank of Lake Chuzenjiko. Its main object of worship is a six meter tall statue of Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. The statue is unique for being carved out of a tree which is still rooted into the ground today.

Toshogu Shrine (東照宮, Tōshōgū) is a magnificent memorial to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868

Milford Sound…only way to do is fly-cruise-fly. The drive is scenic but it is 3-5hrs each way. You can also do the multi-day Milford Track, but unless you fly at least one way, you miss the most amazing vistas of the fjords.

2023 brought us Miles (now age 9mos) making Everett (age 3) a big sister!
Although we all live apart, we relish our times together making memories, enjoying a laugh or two, always with a nice meal and a glass of vino.

Now her cooking is at the next level…contemporary, inventive, earthy, and all her own. What a winning combination with at the helm welcoming guests and pouring wine.
