What's it really like living in the middle of the North Sea?

Ever wondered what drives someone to make their home on a northerly archipelago where the Atlantic Ocean meets the North Sea? ⁣⁣

After stepping off a ferry on the last leg of our journey from the Czech Republic over 20 years ago, I never expected these windswept northern isles would become my heart's true home. ⁣⁣

From dramatic coastal landscapes to heather-covered hills, it's Shetland's wild beauty and wonderful community that continues to captivate me two decades later.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
On my Substack "Postcards from Shetland" I've just published a new piece sharing my journey and what makes life here so special. Link in bio to read the full story!⁣⁣

Planning a visit? Grab a copy of "Shetland: Your Essential Guide to Shetland" – created by ShetlandwithLaurie and myself. You’ll find everything you need to plan your perfect Shetland adventure! 📚

Last Sunday morning, in the crisp winter sunshine, we wrapped up warm and headed to Burra, to be enchanted by the serene beauty of Minn beach and the rugged coastline of Ketla Ness. The air was sharp and fresh, the light golden and soft. Walking along the coastline, I felt as if I had finally woken from the dark winter sleep—a deep breath for the body and mind alike.

January in Shetland has been a month of contrasts—wild storms followed by absolute stillness, fleeting glimpses of sunshine amid dark winter days, and even a rare veil of mist. The sea has mirrored these shifts, sometimes a perfect glassy reflection of the sky, other times crashing wildly against the old stone piers. I’ve loved witnessing it all. These ever-changing scenes remind me why I never tire of this place—there’s always something new to notice, something unexpected to appreciate.

Through it all, I’ve been reflecting on the pace of life and the delicate balance of work, creativity, and taking time to pause. The days may still be short, but little by little, the light is returning. And just like the lengthening days, I’m slowly finding my way—focusing on what truly matters, letting go of what doesn’t, and embracing the beauty in both the calm and the chaos.

I often get asked what it’s like living in a place like Shetland. It’s not for the faint-hearted—think wild winters, breathtaking landscapes, and a slower, simpler pace of life. But for those willing to embrace its quirks, Shetland is endlessly rewarding.

Here’s what it feels like to me…

Late afternoon walk in Lerwick. Spent a couple of peaceful hours exploring the town, browsing the shops, and enjoying a coffee at Mareel. Saturdays like this are the perfect way to unwind after a busy week. So important to make time to recharge and enjoy the little things.

Morning Walks: Untangling the Mental Knot

Every morning, I start my day with a walk. It’s my way of untangling the knots in my mind—those worries, tasks, and thoughts that can feel overwhelming. Step by step, things get lighter, clearer, brighter.

There’s something magical about noticing the little things: the splash of water, the waves on pebbles, the bits of lichen after a storm. These walks aren’t just about movement; they’re about grounding myself and starting the day fresh.

If you’re feeling stuck or weighed down, take a few minutes to step outside. You don’t need anything grand—just a moment for yourself. It’s amazing what 20 minutes can do. 🌟

Yesterday morning, as I walked to work through the buffeting wind and rain, a thought struck me: Shetland is a place of constant movement—both in its physical nature and in the lives of those who pass through it. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for what Shetland’s given me and taught me.

I’ve shared something deeply personal on my Substack—a reflection on how Shetland’s wild beauty and unrelenting movement have shaped me. In my first post of 2025, I explore what it means to live in such a place, how it’s taught me to embrace change, and why I’ve come to love Shetland for both its challenges and its gifts.

If you love Shetland, the magic of wild places, or the idea of finding beauty in impermanence, I’d love for you to give it a read.

Morning walks to the office have become my favourite way to savour the little moments—the sound of the waves, the changing seasons, and the crisp air. Life has been wonderfully busy, but I’m learning to slow down, notice the small joys, and take things at my own pace. I’ve shared more reflections on finding balance and appreciating these quiet moments in my latest Substack post—coming soon!

Shetland is breathtaking year-round, but it’s especially stunning right now with all the wildflowers. Despite the rain, I ventured out for a quick coastal walk in Lerwick and I loved it. Remember, there’s no bad weather, only the wrong clothing. And how beautiful are these little orchids?

It’s been so good to recharge the batteries before another busy week ahead. Really looking forward to the first Knitting & Hiking tour of the season 🥾🧶.
