Shetland is breathtaking year-round, but it’s especially stunning right now with all the wildflowers. Despite the rain, I ventured out for a quick coastal walk in Lerwick and I loved it. Remember, there’s no bad weather, only the wrong clothing. And how beautiful are these little orchids?

It’s been so good to recharge the batteries before another busy week ahead. Really looking forward to the first Knitting & Hiking tour of the season 🥾🧶.

🧶 A New Chapter: Reflecting on Our Journey and Celebrating a Successful Start to Our 2024 Tour Season

Our first Shetland Knitting Tour of the 2024 season was nothing short of magical. As the Shetland sun shone brightly for us and our guests experienced the very best of what these islands have to offer.

Returning to tours after a hiatus since 2019 wasn’t just a restart; it was a renewal. The past few years have been a transformative period. With the pandemic halting our tours, we pivoted to publishing with the Shetland Wool Adventures Journal and other publications, which sustained our connection to the world of Shetland wool. Yet, the call to return to what I love most—sharing Shetland in person with guests—was irresistible. The decision to pivot back and focus on tours again was daunting but filled with a sense of purpose and excitement.

Every aspect of the first tour of the season was marvellous. The guests adored their stay at the Aald Harbour Hoose, where Elizabeth’s warm hospitality and culinary delights became a highlight of their journey. The excellent weather was the cherry on top, with sunshine accompanying us for most of the tour, setting a spectacular backdrop to every adventure.

It's hard to describe my feelings this morning as I sat outside enjoying my coffee in the early sun, reflecting on the past four years. Much like in spring 2020, May has greeted us with beautiful sunshine, yet everything else feels profoundly different. Back then, I was consumed with worry about what the future held for my tours, my clients, and my company amidst relentless uncertainty of those days.

Starting the Shetland Wool Adventures Journal during that period was a pivotal move, born out of necessity but flourishing into a popular and cherished publication enjoyed by many around the globe. Four years on, as we restart our tours this May 1st, I'm awestruck by the journey. So much has changed—not only in the world around us but within myself. I've emerged more confident, seasoned by the battles and changes, matured, less materialistic, and richer in knowledge. I've also learned the priceless value of time with family and friends.

Today, I stand at the helm of not just one, but two thriving enterprises: our tours and publishing. During this period, we brought to life five volumes of the Shetland Wool Adventures Journal, along with two Shetland cookbooks—one of which is my own—and a Fair Isle memoir. This publishing phase will soon see another highlight with the release of our Shetland guidebook, scheduled for this summer and a joint project with ShetlandwithLaurie.

The tours themselves have transformed; what were once groups of 12 are now intimate gatherings of six, staying at the Aald Harbour House, enabling a much more personalised and tailored experience. I'm thrilled to be working with Elizabeth (Elizabeth’s Kitchen Diary), who will take wonderful care of our guests and she'll be cooking up some delicious, homely meals that are sure to make everyone feel right at home! This evolution makes every tour feel significantly more special and connected.

I feel like I've accomplished a great deal and held fast through the stormiest of times. This journey hasn't been easy—filled with worries and uncertainty—but it has undoubtedly been worth it. I'm continuing to carve my path, focusing on what ignites my passion and brings me the most joy: welcoming guests to Shetland and sharing my favourite place on earth with them.

As we step into this new season, I want to take a moment to celebrate this significant shift in my life. I'm looking forward to a phase that promises to be calmer, more peaceful, and settled. Thank you for your unwavering support through these transformative years. Your presence and encouragement have been my anchors, and I am excited to embark on this renewed journey with you.

Scotland Magazine’s latest issue features Marian Armitage and some of her lovely Shetland recipes.

In our current issue we discover how the residents of the Shetland Isles are reclaiming the produce from their seas and fields for themselves and their guests.

One of those residents is Marian Armitage, an award-winning cook, author and co-founder of Shetland Food and Drink.

Marian used to host cookery classes at her home. Sadly she’s now stopped doing these, but her books give a good, warm-hearted introduction into Shetland cooking and the recipes are ones that can be followed (and adapted, if necessary, at home) to include all the family.

One of Marian's delicious recipes is in the current issue of Scotland Magazine!

Braving the chill for a magical walk in Hillswick. 🍂 Clearing the cobwebs and filling our lungs with the crisp air. Sundays like these are truly amazing. ❄️✨

There’s so much to look forward to in this new Shetland guidebook!

Just back from the most amazing walk, my cheeks and legs are burning from the cold and my heart is full to bursting.

The cliffs were incredible; fulmars playing in the updraughts, gannets forming noisy colonies, the sea swirling below, azure and aquamarine blues merging into white as it meets rock. There are no words for today.

The good news: this walk features in our new SHETLAND GUIDEBOOK 🫶🏻 - I’ve also filmed the walk for my Patreon page

Time to get the fire on, pour a glass of red and bask in the rush of endorphins 💙

Here’s an interesting thought… I often get told I’m lucky to live in Shetland, a place of undeniable elemental beauty that captivates many. Yet, life here, especially during the dark, often very wet, and windy winters, presents its own set of challenges, rarely captured in picture-perfect Instagram posts. Thriving in Shetland means embracing the outdoors, no matter the weather, and cherishing the small, everyday moments. It’s a life that teaches resilience, the value of community, and a deep appreciation for the natural world around us.
And for that I am grateful.

Do you find the place where you live also has a profound impact on you as a person? 🌊💨🌿
