As we move into week 3 of muddy, high water on the Rogue, I spent some time moving photos off of my phone and found these great smiles from the 2023 Season.

Enjoy!

We did a thing! We just finished mixing, grinding and packing our world famous fennel /maple sausage which we cook on the boat for our Steelhead & Spring Salmon trips. Definitely a labor of love.
Bill is the seasoning & mixing man, I'm the bagger/sealer😜🤣🤗😆

This is an insane deal for a fair chase spot and stalk Kudu hunt on a huge ranch. No feeders or food plots, no water hole...just natural open veld and no shooting from the vehicle. You will earn your trophies. $1800 for 3 nights, 2 days hunting for 2 people and $350 / day for extra days for very fairly priced other species. We hunted there summer 2021 and the professional hunter is awesome - funny, fun, and super hard working and accommodations and food are wonderful.

Kudu Hunting Safari Package | South Africa - Hunting safari package for 2 hunters with 2 Kudu, 2 hunting days, 3 nights.

New steelhead licensing on Southern Oregon Coast rivers makes the licensing process more complicated. Here is a step by step video explaining how to buy the appropriate license and tags.

It's Winter Steelhead Time on the lower Rogue - Here is everything you need to know including how to get a great deal on your entire stay - hotel, dinner and fishing.

Known more for it's famous spring & fall salmon runs, the Rogue is a sleeping giant for steelhead anglers and we expect this year to be even better.

When we had good water levels last year, we had great steelhead fishing. This is one of the most consistent runs of fish on the Rogue and continues to impress year after year. We expect the same this year.

For those of you unfamiliar with lower Rogue winter steelhead, here are some interesting facts:

* You can catch big steelhead like the one pictured above.

* It's productive. All the steelhead swimming upstream to the upper Rogue, Applegate and Illinois Rivers as well as countless smaller tributaries must swim through the lower Rogue. You'll have lots of steelhead looking at your offerings.

* Hard fighting & tasty. Hooked less than 20 miles from the ocean, these broad shouldered steelhead are full of fight and make outstanding table fare. Since these fish are caught within days of gorging on ocean krill, the flavor is mild and more like ocean fresh salmon than upper river steelhead.

* You can take some home. Steelhead are so prolific in the Rogue system that after Jan 1, we are actually allowed to keep one wild steelhead over 24" per day along with any hatchery steelhead. The limit is 2 steelhead per day per person combined wild & hatchery.

* It's quiet. You won't find scores of boat trailers at every access point like you will on other good steelhead fisheries.

* It's comfortable. Fishing within miles of the ocean for steelhead that will spawn 100 miles upriver means that we are targeting moving fish. So, we fish on the anchor from the comfort of our covered and heated 25' Willie Jet Boat. And, yes, we will be serving our world famous breakfast burritos made with my special recipe homemade sausage on our steelhead trips!

* It's not expensive. It's only $330 per person for a full day of guided fishing, our world famous homemade sausage breakfast burrito, lodging (double occupancy) at Pacific Reef Hotel & dinner at your favorite Gold Beach restaurant - Spinners. And, this is a private charter. Your group of 2-4 people gets the boat to yourselves.

When planning your trip, please be aware that this is our rainy season and that steelhead catching is highly dependent of water flow as the Rogue only has one small dam nearly 200 miles upriver which provides limited flow control. There is always a small chance that we may need to cancel a trip based on flooding or super low water conditions.

Message me, call 530-941-2398, or email me - [email protected] to experience this tremendous fishery!

A must watch for anyone who cares about salmon and steelhead in the Northwest. Real, evidence driven discussion of how hatcheries, the target of emotion based "purist" groups like the NFS and their ilk, actually saved wild runs from extinction and have no measurable impact on wild runs. If after watching this, anyone still believes that hatcheries are the enemy, I'm more than willing to have a private or public evidence based discussion with them.
Enjoy!

Wrap Up - Fall 2021 Rogue
As you may have noticed, we haven't posted in a while and, there is a reason for that. We booked out most of our fall season early this year and really didn't want to advertise how good the fishing was and bring more boats on an already crowded lower river.

We run only private charters instead of selling out every seat on our boat. We find that our clients really appreciate the attention we give to their groups and it's really good to be at a point in life where we can do this.

Here is our post season review - We were in South Africa (For videos of our hunt, shark cage dive and awesome national parks check out our YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/SalmonKingLodge ) the last 3 weeks of June when the spring salmon finally showed up. The fishing, both in the Bay and National Forest was good. July slowed down after the springers moved upriver. While some were posting "awesome" fishing reports for the 1 fish landed for 6 clients in their boat, we rescheduled much of early and mid-July. August heated up rapidly and by early September we experienced limits and near limits fishing. Some days we were off the water with limits well before noon. Decent catching of an average of 1 adult salmon per rod plus lots of wild Coho that had to be returned lasted until the 2nd week of October.
After 2 years of much smaller than normal salmon, we were happy to see the return of much larger fish.

We are now booking 2021-2022 Winter Steelhead on the Rogue. This is probably our strongest run of fish. We will be fishing steelhead mid-Dec - mid-March.
Here are a few of our happy clients from the 2021 Rogue Fall salmon season.
