Taranto Puglia is a fascinating city! I love it here!
🌟On our November 2024 tour we had the opportunity to visit Taranto Vecchia- the ancient part of the city which is situated on a little man-made island created centuries ago!
🌟Filled with artists like Deborah Conte Dhc, little shops, San Cataldo church, restaurants, cafes b&b’s and street art-but it’s the locals who are invigorating and bringing it back to life!
🌟We were so lucky to have Morris Franchini (I call him the mayor, because he know everyone!) and Alessandro Perrone Tour Guide
🌟introduce us to his friends, taking us around its winding streets and bringing us underground to an ancient ipogeo that now is a theatre!

🌿This afternoon was a time to relax and our hotel has a fabulous spa!
🌿Not just any spa this is more of a thermarium experience!
🌿A a pool of soothing cool-ish warm water then slowly walking into a smaller area with a bit hotter water with massaging water jets followed by cool water shower. 🌿You can rest after or get a message.
🌿Heavenly!

🌟Just a short walk from our hotel in Grottaglie we are going to the amazing Emanuele Lenti - Pregiata Forneria LENTI
🌟This is the family owned bakery born in the 1980’s by Emanuele Lenti and his wife Antonella.

🌟The first thing we learn about is the Lievito Madre. Her name is Geneffra and is at least 35 years old! She is the mother of all the deliciousness that is made here.

🌟Giusy Lenti explains the importance of the gigantic oven, which was made with the local Leccese stone. Everything that is made here, is baked in this oven!

🌟Some of the deliciousness we tasted!
🌟Fluffy focaccia dotted with tomatoes & local olives.
🌟Olive & Onion Pie
🌟Crunchy cookies,made with primitivo wine and local almonds,
🌟Savory and Sweet Taralli
🌟Crunchy Frise with fresh tomatoes

Our tour continues! Day 6!
🌿Today we spent the day in Grottaglie, this is our home base for the rest of our tour.
☀️Grottaglie is a village known for its ceramics!
🌿Beautiful ceramic pots & plates, mosaics, murals and street art everywhere you turn!
🌿First we went to the ceramic studio of Mimmo Vestita to see his studio as he begins to weave the story of the history of Grottaglie.
☀️Walking across the street he opens the gate to the most magical place, his personal museum of ceramics!
🌿He shares the story of how it came to be, what he discovered when he began to do renovations.
🌿The discovery of tools, ceramics pots & plates, ancient amphorae for wine & olive oil and a Byzantine church carved into the rock!

How do you finish an epic day centered around olives and wine?
You go to Frantoio Oleario Nastasia-to watch the Olive pressing process and to eat the most traditional Puglia dish-Fave e Cicoria 🥬with the delicious liquid gold pressed in this oil mill!!

One of my favorite things is to watch the people when they bring their olives and waiting during the entire process!

This day continues!
🌿We visited an ancient olive oil mill.
🌿We helped to pick up the olives
🧺had a picnic in the olive groves of Azienda agricola blasi

🌿Now, we learn about the precious liquid gold of Puglia with an Olive Oil Tasting Experience with Patrizia of Frantoio Oleario Nastasia

🌿We learn the reasons why we warm up the glass in our hands, how to swish the oil around our mouth and then taste the oil.

🌿Through this experience we can now have a better understanding and be able to recognize cheap oil (from the supermarket for example) compared to the Real Extra-Virgin fresh pressed olive oil.

🌿It’s a good thing that the oil is sharp & peppery and it tingles the back of your throat-This is a signal of a good quality oil that has all of its important nutritional components.

🌿 Our tour continues with my La Storia Travel! I am a USA based tour company introducing Americans to less visited areas and experiences in the regions of South Italy.
We are here in the Taranto province of Puglia.
🌿This is Èja il vino culturale
🍷We had a very unique wine tasting experience!
🌿Instead of going inside the cantina to taste the wine-we are in the fields surrounded by the vines instead!
🌿We see the vines in front of us, learning their history and family heritage as we are tasting the wine-this creates a deeper experience and understanding.
🌿We are tasting the famous Primitivo.
🌿This beautiful winery is in the town of Sava, which is in the center of the land of Primitivo wine located in the Province of Taranto, Puglia.
(About 15 minutes from the olive farm where we were just collecting olives) Sommelier Pietro Carmelo Mitrangolo explained everything with such care and detail,.

🌿This is the farm .
🌿After experiencing the olive picking, we sat down under the olive trees to learn more about her family farm, regenerative farming practices and why it’s important to the land.
🤩We tasted her delicious oil, of course!
Look at the beautiful color of this prized liquid gold!

Tour Day 5! The experience continues
🌿This is Azienda Agricola Blasi, an organic & regenerative farm owned by Emilia Blasi and her family located in the countryside of Grottaglie in the Province of Taranto in Puglia.
🌿It’s olive pressing season and we are here to help with the Raccolta-the picking of the olives!
🌿it’s perfect timing because we are experiencing the entire process from the picking of the olives to the pressing!
🌿 The olives are picked by hand and also will 2 types of mechanical rakes called abbacchiatore.
🌿One rake is to shake the olives on the outside branches. & the other for the inside branches.

🌿 as our tour guide we are experiencing a truly off the beaten path experience!

🌿First! we have a very special visit to an ancient olive oil mill that is owned by Antonella Pepe and her family.

🌿We visit the inside of the ancient underground mill and learn process of how the olives were pressed and prepared to create the treasure of this land, olive oil way back in the day!

🌿Day 4 continues! We arrived to the town of Grottaglie in the Province of Taranto in Puglia! This is our home base for the next 4 days!
🤩We are just in time for dinner and I’m so excited to share with my guests my Favorite restaurant!
Trattoria

We ate these things!
First-Pettole! The traditional Pugliese pillowy fried orbs of deliciousness! I didn’t learn to love them until I had them here!

🐟 Antipasti from the sea!
🐙Grilled local octopus
🥖 Butter bread flavored with lemon & anchovies from Cetara-the little town on the Amalfi Coast.
🌊Marinated local mackerel
🦑 Local cuttlefish au gratin with broccoli from their garden

Antipasti from the land!
😍Fried ricotta cheese with ham
🥖Bread meatballs with Don Carlo cheese,
🧅 Calzone which is like a pie stuffed with local Acquaviva onion
🎃 Grilled pumpkin ribbons from their garden.
🥦Vegetables from their garden au gratin with olive powder.

For dessert!
Creamy Pistachio Semifreddo
A version of Tiramisu but better 😍
Persimmon with Pomegranate pearls.

SO DELICIOUS!!

Tour day 4!
☀️We departed Naples and headed onto our next adventures in the region of Puglia!
🙃Sometimes plans go sideways and not as planned. Today was the day!
🌊 Let’s go to the sea instead! 🌊

🌿This is Metaponto in the region of Basilicata
In the summer this place is packed as it’s known for its fine golden sand and beautiful clear water!
😊🇮🇹Today we had the beach to ourselves, a delicious lunch, a frollic on the sand and view of the calm sea!
☀️🌊🇮🇹
Onward to the city of ceramics-Grottaglie! Our home for the next 4 days!

☀️Tour Day 3-continues!!
What do after an epic private tour of Pompeii?
🌿A delicious lunch at an agriturismo high in the mountains of course!
We tasted all the delicious things!
Marinated vegetables and fried dough!
🤩Pasta with chick-peas
🍝House made ravioli with fresh tomatoes
🤩Fig and chocolate tarts!
🐖We saw the cutest piglets and the these beautiful views!!
