Update: Stafford Drive will reopen at 10am today, Friday 12 May.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The threat of heavy rain over the next few days has forced us to close Stafford Drive at the Ruby Bay Bluffs from this evening.

A heavy rain warning has been issued for our region as MetService anticipates a significant rainfall event for parts of New Zealand until Sunday.

The Ruby Bay Bluffs were severely damaged in last August’s weather event with a massive slip falling onto the road below.

In the interests of safety and following advice from MetService and our Hydrology team, we will be closing Stafford Drive at the Ruby Bay Bluffs from 9pm tonight as a precaution.

The situation will be monitored, but we’re anticipating that the road will remain closed for the duration of the weather warning when we will reassess the situation.

A detour via State Highway 60, Te Mamaku Drive will be put in place.

McKee Camp will open at 10.30 am on Sunday 1 January 2023. We had hoped to reopen the McKee Memorial Reserve for camping before Christmas, but regrettably, events and the weather were not in our favour. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

We have a few other changes:
- McKee Camp is now EFTPOS only – no cash will be taken.
- McKee will close to camping on 31 May 2023 and reopen on 1 October 2023.
- The maximum length of stay is 28 days.
- McKee is now a rubbish-free zone. Please bring a suitable container with you and take all of your rubbish away with you.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we worked through the challenges of reopening the McKee Memorial Reserve to camping.

🔥🔥Prohibited fire season for Waimea Rural!🔥🔥

The Waimea Rural zone of the Nelson-Marlborough Fire District is now in a prohibited fire season as of 8am Tuesday 18 January.

Under a prohibited fire season, the only allowable fire types that can be safely used are gas-operated appliances, charcoal BBQ’s, pizza ovens, chimineas and cultural cooking fires. All of which should be operated under conditions detailed on www.checkitsalright.co.nz.

Nelson-Marlborough District Manager, Grant Haywood says hot summer days coupled with very little or no rainfall around Nelson-Tasman during January make for a great summer holiday. Unfortunately, this also means the District is drying out and the fire risk is increasing every day..

All fire permits in the Nelson, Tasman, Golden Bay, Lake Rotoiti and Murchison areas are now suspended. If you have had a permitted open fire over the last month, please recheck the burn pile to ensure any hot embers have been fully extinguished using water.

Grant Haywood would like to remind people that one spark is all it takes to start a devastating fire.

“Please take extreme care whilst undertaking activities such as mowing grass, using power tools or chainsaws, or driving vehicles through roadside vegetation over the coming weeks, as these activities could start a fire,” he says.

“If using spark emitting machinery, ensure you have a readily accessible water supply on hand, undertake the activity on cleared bare ground and if possible, wait until the morning or evenings - during the cooler parts of the day.”

If you are in doubt about what you can and can’t do this fire season, go to checkitsalright.nz.
