Bajos del Toro is a region of Costa Rica a short drive north from San Jose. ⁣

The area boasts Jurassic Park vibes, with deep, narrow canyons, plunging waterfalls, hanging valleys, dense rainforests, and wild jungles.⁣

It’s a larger-than-life reflection of the locations depicted in the Jurassic Park movies. 🦖🎥🍿⁣

There are over 6,000 species of reptiles in Costa Rica, but one you're almost sure to see when you visit is the Green Iguana, pictured here. 🦎 🐊 🐍 ⁣
⁣
There is one other species of iguana, a bit less common, but still plentiful: the Spiny Tailed Iguana. ⁣
⁣
This Green Iguana crossed our path while leaving the beach near Uvita. We got a good look at him before he scurried off and climbed a tree. ⁣
⁣
Nose to tail, he was a little over 1 meter long. 🦎🌴🌿⁣
⁣

If you haven’t heard of Manuel Antonio National Park, let this be your introduction. 🌴🌊⁣

Located in the central Pacific zone of Costa Rica, It’s a relatively small national park, but it’s the most visited in the country. ⁣
⁣
And with good reason. 😍🌴⁣
⁣
As you can see, it’s a lush, rainforest lined with pristine beaches. 🏝️⁣
⁣
The park itself has guided tours and hiking trails that are easy to navigate and well groomed. ⁣
⁣
Wildlife thrives here, but we recommend a guided tour to see it. You will likely notice and see a lot more. 🐒 🦥 🦜🌴⁣

One of things I love about Costa Rica is the changes in weather. ⁣

I love the diversity in microclimates throughout the country. ⁣

Go into the highlands and the mountain country and it can get downright cold, especially at night 🥶⁣

Costa Rica’s busy season for tourism is in full swing! ✈️ 👣 🏖️⁣

Known by ticos as “summer,” the dry season, or tourist season, runs from December to April, generally. ⁣
⁣
September and October can be quite rainy in most parts of the country, but April through August is an underrated time to book Costa Rica travel. 🎒🗺️ 🧭 🥾 ⁣
⁣
During the early months of the rainy season, it rains more than during the tourist season. But not that much more, except in Guanacaste, which is a much more arid province in “summer.”⁣
⁣
Benefits of rainy season travel include:⁣
• Green, lush vegetation⁣
• Lower prices ⁣
• Fewer crowds⁣
• More active wildlife⁣
• Better surfing and diving⁣
• Waterfalls are more beautiful⁣
• River rafting is better⁣
⁣
If I had one suggestion or one travel hack to share, it would be this: Don’t completely write off the rainy season. 🌩️☔️⁣

Tamarindo is a beach town in the Guanacaste province and is a favorite among tourists for several reasons:⁣
⁣
✈️ Proximity to an international airport (LIB in Liberia is 1.5 to 2 hours’ drive depending on route)⁣
🏝️ Beautiful beaches⁣
🌅 Spectacular sunsets ⁣
📷 Endless photo opportunities ⁣
🌋 Nearby National Parks (Tenorio Volcano & Rincón de la Vieja National Parks are both about a 3 hour drive)⁣
🏨 Restaurant and lodging options are numerous and can fit any budget ⁣
🇺🇸 English is widely spoken ⁣
🏕️ Perfect base for day trips ⁣
⁣
The downsides are few but do exist:⁣
⁣
• If you don’t like “touristy” places or crowds, avoid during the high season (Dec-Apr)⁣
• A bit more expensive than smaller Tico towns or rural areas⁣
• The beach is usually quite busy to downright crowded, depending on the season⁣
⁣
If you can live with the downsides, Tamarindo is a fun town and an easy place for a tourist to visit, as the town caters to tourists. ⁣
