More great memories from ‘Batman Forever’. The 1/4 scale alleyway set on Warner Bros Stage 16 where we shot the miniature Batmobile climbing the wall, the gargoyle at the top of the wall, and me inspecting the Bat Cave tunnel. Look closely, the tunnel is made from aluminum foil and the dumpster in the alley displays a GMD graphic. The small print reads Gotham Maintenance Department but we all know that GMD stands for Grant McCune Design.

At the end of ‘Sphere’, in order to escape their impending demise, the three main characters escape in a small exploration sub. We built two scales, one for the motion control footage and one for the surfacing scene at the end. I flew to Alameda to photograph Samuel L Jackson, Sharon Stone and Dustin Hoffman. One of the great perks of being the production designer of a practical visual effects house.

You can imagine how excited I was when I was handed an actual DeLorean and asked to convert it into Doc Brown's iconic time machine. I completed the task in under three weeks with the help of the famous and talented Randy Cooper and the brilliant and multi-skilled Tom Hail. I was tempted to take it up to 88 mph but was afraid I might not be able to get back.

Final refining of Batwing for Batman Forever. Sculpt, fiberglass, sand, bondo, sand, repeat, sand, sand, aaaand sand..then sand again. That's how you create an original hard-shell model. Please give a sanding ovation.

This is the asylum that housed Geoffrey Rush as Casanova Frankenstein in Mystery Men. The one built indoors was shot with a motion control camera. The floor was replaced with water in post.The outdoor version was blown to bits.

When I was nine years old, I had a personal interaction with Leonard Nimoy in my hometown of Concord CA. While in Hollywood, I designed for TNG series and two Star Trek features. I drew this Mr. Spock caricature as a tribute when Mr. Nimoy passed. Live long and prosper, my friends.

Makin' shark bait for Deep Blue Sea. Mini stunt double of Stellan Skarsgard. Live action was shot in the Titanic tank in Mexico. I shared lunch with Stellan, shot a roll of reference pics, and then built his likeness.
