Awww...those ears, those big dark eyes, that blaze, and all those chin whiskers...what's not to love about this little guy! Only a few days old, he didn't stray far from mom, but the stream between us must have been enough safety for him to just stand there and bat those long lashes at me! Wild is wild, but I would just love to give him a hug and go nose to nose with that soft muzzle!

My love affair with panoramic cameras began over thirty years ago with that sweet little number known as the Widelux 35mm made by Panon Camera Shoko of Japan. She was a versatile, petite beauty that everyone including Jeff Bridges loved, but let me tell you, that demeanor of hers was quirky. The spring loaded, rotating barrel could speed up or slow down on a whim, there were times when you weren't exactly sure where her focus was, and you never really knew how many images she would give you on that roll of 35mm film. And yet I loved this beauty, and on our first travel date I took her to New England in and out to the Marshall Point lighthouse seen here. She loved horizons, she loved certain lines, and if everything worked, she gave you shots like this!

Twenty five years ago I set off for Lake Powell with an Australian friend who was doing a panoramic book on America. I was shooting with a Noblex 6/150 camera at the time, and it featured a rotating barrel with a vertical slit that laid down the image on a curved piece of 120 film. It was a beautiful camera to hold, sometimes a beast to work with, but the images could be stunning. We had rented a houseboat out of Wahweap marina, and as it was January, we were pretty much the only boat out on the lake. Just before sunset we found a bay with these stunning red rocks, and we scrambled to anchor and set up a few shots before the sun went completely down. Somehow I ended up being the deckhand, and I was the one chosen to jump into the freezing cold water to guide the boat up onto the sand. I'd say it was worth the effort.

Solitude, contentment, peace, freedom....this one seems to sum it up. But how long will it last? The BLM and Forest Service are targeting this herd for roundup sometime this year. Out here it makes no sense.
