Montessori Bububu, located around 10 km north of Zanzibar Town, includes a kindergarten, primary school and orphanage (Montessori Orphans Organisation, M.O.O.).�
Around 25 children attend the kindergarten. They paint, play, learn how to write and do "learning by sound" (songs, rhymes, games, etc.). The primary school is attended by a total of 28 children aged 7 to 15 years, out of which 16 are
in their first year and 12, in their second year. The school suffers from a lack of funds as many parents cannot afford school fees, and thus, are unable to pay salaries to teachers. Currently, apart from volunteers, the only other teachers are the school director, Suzana and her two oldest daughters. Volunteers teach English, which is typically done through educational games, songs, rhymes, etc. The organization, which was founded in 2006, is also a home for around 40 orphans and vulnerable children, whose parents cannot afford their up bringing or are sick. school children are funded through the fees attained through the Montessori School, though in most cases, fees cannot be afforded and the conditions of the children can be extremely pitiful, with most meals being just rice and beans. Instead of bringing gifts, we recommend volunteers to do some private fundraising, which makes it possible for M.O.O. to buy better food ingredients for the orphans and vulnerable children. Everything the children need can be bought on the island, and “luxury” items such as soft toys, clothes, games etc. are not of primary importance; space to keep such items is also minimal.��
Other than teach English, volunteers spend time and do leisure activities with the orphans and vulnerable children in the afternoons, such as going to the beach (which is only 5 minutes away) doing excursions, (for instance to Jozani Forest and ZALA Park), or doing Daladala day trips to other places in Zanzibar. There is also an interest in environmental education. The school has recently started its own gardening project which looks to to cater to the center’s need for fruits and vegetables – they currently grow tomatoes, courgettes and beans. The school director Suzana Maziku, who has 5 children herself, is highly motivated and proactive, making it easy for volunteers to enjoy their work. The day usually starts at 6 in the morning with the preparation of breakfast, which is always porridge; the children of M.O.O. have breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Classes are from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.��There are 2 weeks of holidays before Christmas, before Easter and during Eid-Al-Fitr. Before these holidays, the students write their exams which will be corrected after the holidays. The school is attended by Christian and Muslim children, which is unusual in Zanzibar. Volunteers can participate at the church services; even if you are not a religious person, this is an interesting experience.

We wanted to share some pics of the beautiful Xmas Performance held last Christmas at Gold Zanzibar Beach House & Spa! It's holiday time now!!🎉
And now we have some renovations going on. We will get new toilets because often in the morning the kids have to wait because outside is only one toilet. Maybe it will be finished before new year!
Today we listened to some Christmas music and draw a lot. The kids enjoyed their first day without school!

We have a lot of great drawing session. Then every child gets paper and pen and we just draw what we want to or do mandalas.

Today we had some guests from Norway. They are living together with some volunteers from the orphanage in one volunteer house. They wanted to visit the kids and buy stuff for them. So today they came with drinks and food. Before they left they gave some toothbrushes and toothpaste to the children, nearly everyone got his/her own one. The kids really enjoyed everything!
So we say Ahsante sana to our Norwegian friends!

Yesterday we did a tour to Michamvi which is located in the southeast of Zanzibar. The tour was payed by the donations from volunteers. We left in the morning at 10am with two big buses. Of course the children used the time in the bus to show their singing skills. After arriving we first ate some Pilau which was prepared in the morning and very delicious. Then the children played in the water and had a lot of fun. At 4pm we left again. It was a beautiful day!

Hey everyone,
Sometimes the children can go to the beach for example with volunteers and some of the older children of the orphanage. There they play soccer and try to catch fish. Also they chill in the sun and play tag. A day on the beach is a fun day for everyone!

Hey everyone,
We want to give you some impressions of the time after school.
The children are helping with washing and cooking especially the older children. After school they can choose to play inside or outside of the house. Outside they play soccer, climb trees or try to make handstand or other acrobatic moves. Inside they draw, look at books, write on the blackboard or fold things out of paper for example paper planes.

Hey everyone,
donations and help really are coming in!
Volunteers started fund raising at home with their families and friends - with that money we bought
new mattresses, bed sheets and mosquito nets,
food and electricity for three months,
maintenance and repair of the house,
the visit of a doctor and needed medication,
school books for every student.
The families and friends of Volunteers also collected a lot of stuff at home, put them into boxes and sent them here to Zanzibar! The day before yesterday we opened them together!
As you can see, any kind of help reaches the orphanage!
If you also want to sent a package with clothes or any other necessary equipment, don't hesitate!
And the joy in the eyes of the children while opening the packages is priceless!
Soon we will make a post with a list of things the orphanage needs or the children would be happy about.

This is our home!🏠
We have four classrooms.The first one is for the little children in which they play and already learn how to read and write. The second and third rooms are for the bigger children where they learn English, Swahili, Science, Religion and Maths. There are also two small stockrooms and one bathroom for everyone.

There are three bedrooms with bunk beds, here sleep the teenagers and the two nannies. We have two other bedrooms, one for the little children and one for Mama Suzy and her children.🌚🌜
Outside we cook and have space to play and eat.🤹⚽

Rice and beans are staple food. Today the delivery men brought 50 kg rice which last for one week and also 50 kg beans which last for about one month.
