Together against corona – with internationally coordinated research. Scientists around the world are racing to develop a vaccine and drugs to combat the virus. The research is being driven by the international vaccine alliance CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations). Germany recently increased its contribution to this by 140 million euros. Global crises can only be solved together.

Currently experiencing somewhat of a boom, the eastern German city of Leipzig has been nicknamed the New Berlin in some quarters as young entrepreneurs, artists and general creative types who’ve been priced out of the capital move here in their droves.
A city of massive contrasts, it’s known by classical music lovers through its connections to Bach, Wagner and Mendelssohn, as well as having areas like Connewitz – anarchic, punkish, semi-derelict in some parts with a lefty, communal vibe.

For an educational fix and to really get to grips with the city, the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum is a superb museum to when Leipzig was an important cog in the great, clanking machine of the GDR. Over 3,200 artefacts of everyday life are here and shown in clear context of life under the Communist regime, including communications equipment, books, magazines, football shirts, artworks and much more.

It’s an engaging place indeed. The main sights can be done and dusted in a weekend, but you’ll find yourself oddly not wanting to leave. It’s a cool place.

Why not have a weekend exploring one of these gems?

Hainich National Park – ancient woodland in the heart of Germany

This wild and untamed national park in Thuringia is located in the southern part of the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werra Valley Nature Park. It is situated between the spa town of Bad Langensalza and the Wartburg Castle town of Eisenach. In winter, the best way to appreciate the beauty of the landscape is to take a sleigh ride. In spring and autumn, the Rennsteig Trail and other well-marked footpaths are popular with walkers.

GERMANY: We have a love story to tell about Germany. No, not ours, but a story that we identify with nonetheless. We hope to explore this story's German origins soon and share its details with you.

There are other love stories to discover in Germany. Some go back centuries and involve British and German royals. For example, did you know that Queen Elizabeth II is descended from the German princely House of Wettin? Those royal lines may have become blurred with time but Germany has many castles which stand today as reminders of love that crossed boundaries.

What is a love story without flowers? In 2017, Germany will play host to the International Garden Exhibition which will see Berlin's urban landscape transformed into an 'Ocean of Colours' with a garden project the size of 144 football pitches!

Love also needs space to breathe. In the coming months, we look forward to taking our love for the outdoors into the German countryside where we hope to unearth stories about food, culture and history. Watch this space as we explore a . Better still, why not come with us! :-)

- What you didn't know about Erfurt,

Erfurt "... is ideally situated. There just has to be a city on a spot like this!..." In the 16th century this was the judgement of Martin Luther the great reformer. The first official reference, however, was in 742 when Erfurt was mentioned in a letter to Pope Zacharias. St. Boniface, who was a missionary archbishop, also recognised that the "Erphesfurt" location situated on the fertile meadows along the river Gera seemed as if it were predestined for a great future so that he recommended the settlement to the Roman Catholic Church as a suitable place for a bishopric.

Erfurt did, in fact, become the spiritual centre of Thuringia. There were three factors that encouraged the early growth of Erfurt as town: firstly, it was ideally located at the point of intersection between two ancient German (and European) trade routes, secondly, Erfurt was an early trading centre with extensive commercial links and thirdly, a royal palace was situated within the city.

- What you didn't know about Dortmund,

Like almost no other German city, Dortmund has seen enormous change in recent years. The former "steel city" developed into a modern and cosmopolitan metropolis, acquiring renown all across Europe as an innovative location for technological development.

But the biggest city in the Ruhr Valley also scores with a wide range of possibilities in the cultural and sporting sector, with extensive greens and a high quality of life.

Take the whole family on an outing to Dortmund – what a great idea! Even young tourists can find a load of activities that are sure to please. What about travelling back in time to the Ice Age? Perhaps a visit to Walter the orang-utan or Sandra, the giant anteater? The largest tepee in the world is also surely a great destination.

Everyone knows the BVB. And that’s a good thing! However, Dortmund has much more sports to offer than football. There are unlimited opportunities to participate in athletics here.

Culture enthusiasts will revel in Dortmund. Be awed by virtuoso concerts. Experience incredible intensity at the theatre. Discover the media art of the future. Dive into a world of coal, coke, and collegiality.

The CHANCELLOR’S BUNGALOW in Bonn is one of the most important examples of West German postwar architecture in terms of both building history and political history. The most renowned building designed by Sep Ruf (1908 –1982) which from 1964 until 1999 served as the official residence of the German chancellor. - What you didn't know about Leipzig,

Leipzig is a place where tradition rubs shoulders with zeitgeist, and where great art can be enjoyed just a few steps away from an exciting world of outdoor activities. With a history going back almost 1,000 years, this Saxon metropolis has earned more than a few claims to fame – as a city of music, of commerce, of heroes, as the site of the Peaceful Revolution, as Little Paris, Athens on the River Pleisse, and the Venice of the North.

- What you didn't know about Frankfurt Airport?

Frankfurt Airport is among the busiest in Europe, third in passenger traffic after Heathrow Airport in London and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, and the ninth busiest airport in the world. It is also the busiest airport in Germany, even though Frankfurt is neither the capital, nor the largest city in the country. This is because a multitude of factors, including the post-war division of Germany, the central location of Frankfurt inside the erstwhile West Germany, and its becoming a hub of the high-speed rail network, as well as Frankfurt's becoming the financial capital of Germany and an important trade fair location, the latter being as much a reason for and result of the airport's development.

Most importantly, however, Frankfurt has been chosen as a hub by Lufthansa, the German flag carrier, which became one of the largest airlines of the world. Still the largest number of Lufthansa's long-haul flights originate or terminate in Frankfurt. Due to Frankfurt's importance, many other airlines also serve the airport, and almost all other Star Alliance carriers serve it as well. The majority of other major airlines, both oneworld and SkyTeam members as well as independents, have flights to Frankfurt from their hubs. There is, however, a notably low presence by Germany's number two airline, Air Berlin, which only offers a handful of holiday destinations from the airport, and a connection to their own hub at Berlin-Tegel. Most low fare airlines don't serve Frankfurt (due - among other reasons - to its comparatively high landing fees). Most chose to instead fly into Hahn and pretend it to be close to Frankfurt even though it is more than 100 km distant.

The Black Forest, a mountainous region in southwest Germany, bordering France, is known for its dense evergreen forests and picturesque villages, which inspired some of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. It's also renowned for the cuckoo clocks produced in the region since the 1700s. It’s a destination for hiking and biking at vast nature parks, skiing Feldberg Mountain, and swimming and sailing Lake Titisee.

- What you didn't know about Deutsche Lufthansa?

Deutsche Lufthansa is the flag carrier of Germany and the largest airline in Europe in terms of overall passengers carried. The name of the company is derived from Luft (German for ‘air’) and Hansa (after the Hanseatic League, a powerful medieval trading group). Lufthansa's registered office and corporate headquarters are in Cologne, with their main operations base at Frankfurt Airport. Lufthansa is a founding member of Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance, formed in 1997.
