To meet the water requirements of the areas below Malakand's top, the British government in 1903 decided to build a water canal from the river swat through a tunnel in the Malakand mountains. This Headworks at Amandara Batkhela is part of that project that was constructed by Ransomes & Rapier England. The original decal of the manufacturer is there on the equipment.
Later in 1930, a hydropower project was planned by the British Government, at Jabban, 10 Km of Dargai town Malakand Agency which was completed by 1937.

Known for its scenic beauty and ruins of Ganhdara civilization, Swat valley has also traced of the early Islamic period. Among them the Mahmood Ghazanvi Mosque in Odigram is an important site, which is said to be one of the earliest mosques in Pakistan.
