Eastbourne Bakery, born from a love of food and freshly baked sourdough. 🍞

Mark started baking at the age of 17 and after developing his skills working and learning in Europe, managing bakeries in New Zealand and abroad he opened his very own bakery here in Eastbourne, 25 years later. ☀

Mark and his talented team pride themselves on serving freshly baked sourdough bread and baked goods daily. They want all of their customers to feel like they are purchasing treats that were baked just for them. That's the kind of service you can expect stepping foot in this gorgeous bakery.

Speaking of the bakery, it is cozy, modern and smells exactly as you'd expect ...divine. The shelves are stacked full of bread, their cabinet boasts sweets from Chocolate cake loafs to pistachio and chocolate croissants. And we can say from experience, their salami sourdough sandwich is fresh and tasty.

We can confidently say that Han River Korean Restaurant, smack-bang in the city centre, is home to the best Korean food in Wellington. 😍🥢

The menu is huge and everything sounds delicious, so let us give you some suggestions. Start your meal with a crispy kimchi pancake. Followed by the dolsot bibimbap - a sizzling stone pot filled with rice, assorted vegetables, and your choice of protein, all topped with gochujang sauce.
For Seafood lovers try the haemuljeon, a savoury pancake brimming with fresh seafood and green onions, and you can’t go wrong with a serving of Korean fried chicken. 🤤

There is also a range of Korean snacks, soju, makgeolli, and other beloved Korean beverages.

Han River has something for all lovers of Asian food. The recipe behind its success is straightforward: a focus on crafting timeless, authentic food, and doing it well.

Did you know that Eastbourne Fruit Supply is Eastbourne's longest-running business? 🍎🍏🍇

Jack and Jenny Lai opened the fruit store back in 1953. Today their kids, Sandra, Tom and Richard, and their kids run the show - that's three generations having worked for the family business!

Customers come from as far as Seatoun and Upper Hutt to buy their fruit and vege here, some of them former locals who continue to make a trip to the Rimu St store.

The secret to survival? “We’re the only fruit shop in Eastbourne,” laughs Sandra Lai, who first began working in the shop after school, along with her brothers.

Tom, Richard and Sandra love working together and take pride in sourcing locally produced fresh fruit, vege and flowers for their community.

Brett Nicholls is a chocolatier and the proud owner of Petone's very own Chocolate shop - which has been around for 14 years! 🍫🤤

As soon as you open the door to The Chocolate Story, you're hit by the indulgent smell of chocolate. 😍 Brett uses natural ingredients and ethically sourced cocoa and chocolate from beans that are grown by smaller plantations. They all have their own unique flavour profile, so all the flavour is from the bean - unlike mass produced chocolate bars that rely on additives to create their flavour. Some customer favourites are the French Caramel and vegan raspberry chocolate.

Alongside their own inhouse chocolates, Brett stocks a wide range of other artisan New Zealand chocolate brands and treats from around the country. They can cater for any dietary needs including vegan, gluten free and sugar free.

Brett is always happy to share his knowledge about chocolate, you'd be hard-pressed to ask a question he couldn't answer. ✨

Sweet Vanilla Kitchen has been around for 14 years, located in a historic character building on Pretoria Street. They are a cozy, award-winning cafe doing a whole lot of good in the community. ✨

Cheryl has been a pastry chef for over 30 years and baking is a huge part of her cafe, with the oven cranking at least 8 hours a day. They make many birthday cakes each week and absolutely stunning sweet and savoury cabinet treats. 🍰

The philosophy at SVK is simple, fresh, creative cuisine. Their coffee is locally roasted by Revive Espresso Limited and they use locally sourced produce including Valley Greens, Zany Zeus, Capital Produce, Harrison’s Butchery, Shelly Bay Baker and EG eggs - all amazing products!! Their menu is very popular and caters for keto, gluten free and vegan options.

The team at Sweet Vanilla are friendly, talented and close knit - Hannah, Evana, Alicia and Leemany have been with Cheryl from the day she opened. Sweet Vanilla's customers are unbelievably generous, the community and SVK have donated around $40,000 to Wellington Free Ambulance in the last two years. 😍✨

Fran had always dreamed of opening a store like Goldiehomestore, she'd assumed it was something that would never actually happen.

Come 2021, an opportunity landed on her doorstep - and with the help of her husband Mark, Fran quit her job in advertising and started working on turning Goldie into a reality and bringing all of her favourite brands to Eastbourne. ☀🌊

With a background in marketing, advertising and graphic design ...as well as a love of shopping, it's no wonder Goldie is such a beautifully curated space.

Fran loves supporting female-owned businesses and those that make quality products while considering people and the planet. There is a seamless blend of design labels from New Zealand and further afield.

Brands like Audo Copenhagen, Frank Green, Assembly Label and Baggu are right at home alongside New Zealand favourites such as Città, Nature Baby, Sophie and Ashley & Co. There are also beautiful brands that many shoppers discover for the first time at Goldie including the likes of Abel, Raaie, Isle of Eden and Author Ceramics.

You can find Goldie nestled in the seaside village of Eastbourne and online, goldiestore.co.nz

💫 New coffee & plant spot in Petone! 🌱☕️

The Elephant Ear opened yesterday and we are loving the jungle vibes of the green interior and ofcourse, Laffare coffee. 🌿

Owner Kaysey is a lover of all things plants and coffee, which shouldn’t be a surprise at this point. Alongside the plants and coffee you’ll find sweet treats, scones, books, tools, sprays and planters.

This space is so beautifully decorated and thought out, there are a couple off nooks to sit down and enjoy your coffee amongst the jungle. It’s well worth checking out!

Freya and Matt have built a reputation for creating whimsical and memorable cafes across Wellington, serving fabulous coffee and food. ✨

The glorious House of Good Fortune is tucked down a very unassuming side street in Petone. With it's mint green weatherboards and burgundy roof, a stark contrast to their industrial neighbours. Popular amongst politicians, plumbers, and everyone in between. The team at House of Good Fortune pride themselves on keeping an 'open door to everyone'. 👋

They have a small, ever-changing blackboard menu, keeping things fresh and staying true to the Good Fortune ethos that no two days should be the same. Their cabinet food is consistently delicious, full of sweet and savoury home-baked goods, salads, wraps and pies. 🥗🥪 They have lots of vegetarian and vegan options too.

The House of Good Fortune is full of surprises. Home to Good Fortune Coffee co., this is where they roast, grind, and bag fair trade coffee beans for distribution around New Zealand. ☕ Enjoy a cup of coffee brewed from beans roasted just metres away.

Steph has had a long career working with coffee, after a decade of working in a coffee roastery she wanted to have a go at running her own coffee shop. ☕☕ 3 years ago she set her sights on The Flying Bean Coffee Cart - an iconic espresso bar right on the beach front in Petone. 🌊☀

Steph describes the vibe at the Flying Bean as "full of beans" 🤣 serving great coffee and passable banter 👀. She wanted to create a space where people can enjoy a coffee, the sea breeze and of course the view. Her customers range from truckies and tradies, mums and bubs, fitness goers and their 4-legged friends. 🐶

The team at The Flying Bean get on like a house of fire 🔥, you'll often catch them joking around or vibing to a bit of Sticky Fingers, Ocean Ally and the odd country song. They're fast workers and offer a text order service for those in a hurry.

Just the other day a mum said to Steph that this is the only place she can come to get a coffee without waking her sleeping baby. As a mum herself, Steph totally gets the struggle of needing something for yourself, so she started a Mums and Bubs Club on Tuesdays from 10am til 2pm where she offers a cheap coffee and scone deal.

Steph is a big believer in supporting local. She uses all local suppliers including Revive Espresso, Chubby Baker, Paekakriki Real Fruit Ice blocks and they have a few new Gluten Free options from Panama Bakery.

Did you know the cloak worn by Gandalf on Lord of the Rings was made by Stansborough? - our very own weaving mill right here in Petone!

Stansborough is a family-owned business. In 1995 Cheryl purchased a flock of grey sheep, and one day she decided to learn how to weave. She bought an old historic loom, then another and another until she had six. 🐑🐑

With the help of her husband and family the business gained momentum - so much so that they caught the eye of filmmakers, interior designers, boutique hotels and even royals - having been gifted to King and Queens. You can spot Stansborough textiles in Lord of The Rings, Narnia, Mortal Engines, The Hobbit and The Waterhorse to name a few. ✨

Everything about Stansborough’s products is New Zealand-made, right down to the labels and bespoke packaging. Cheryl is proud of her company’s locally made ethos.

“Any of the processes that we can’t take care of ourselves we outsource to other New Zealand companies. Even the historic looms have come from old woollen mills around the country. We collected them over the years and brought them back here to the old woollen mills in Petone,” she says.

At the Stansborough mill and storefront, you can buy woollen blankets and throws, scarves and baby clothes. You can even pick up a replica Elven cloak.

The mill doubles as a gallery. You can see the historic looms operating if you book in for a behind-the-scenes tour to learn about the history of the mill and see the historic looms in action.

Did you know there is a gorg boutique just across the road from Days Bay beach? 😍😲 The Cove Store has an exclusive selection of premium New Zealand and Australian brands, for work and play.

The Eastbourne community had been talking about needing more boutiques for years, and when the site became available, locals Lisa, Emily, Jen and Tamara knew it would be perfect.

As keen shoppers, they wanted to create a different experience to the online scrolling that we've gotten used to. You can't beat the experience of walking into a beautiful store and searching for the perfect piece. The girls instore are always happy to help and next time you pop in, check out the brand new, comfortable changing rooms out back.

Grab a delicious coffee from Chocolate Dayz Cafe next door and pop into The Cove for a lovely shopping experience.

If you haven’t tried fresh, made to order sushi yet - you need to get down to Sushi Monster! 🍱

Joe and Niew have been upping the sushi game in Lower Hutt for almost 10 years, come July. They believe that sushi just tastes better when it’s made to order with fresh ingredients.

Alongside their sushi, the katsu chicken curry is very popular - and our personal favourite. We also over heard other customers raving about the katsu chicken burger. 🤤

Marie, Danielle and Rane had one simple goal for their cozy coffee shop - provide good coffee in a space that feels like home for people. ☕ The name Espresso High comes from that feeling after the first sip of a really great brew, while incorporating their location on High Street ...very clever. 🤓

As word got out, the girls expanded their offering to include Filipino-inspired desserts and freshly baked goods that bring a little bit of their heritage to Lower Hutt. They love to experiment with unique ingredients - creating treats that you won't find anywhere else. 🧁

Espresso High isn't just another cafe. They're committed to quality and creativity in everything that they serve. Like their award-winning Ube Latte with it's vibrant purple colour and the right amount of sweetness.

The space is warm and inviting with several nooks to settle in to and the girls welcome you in like you're part of the family. 🤗

Did you know Fix Federation and Janus Bakkerij, two iconic spots in Lower Hutt, are both owned by Arna and Jason!? ✨

As a young fella, Jason began his baking career in the dish room at Janus Bakkerij. Joe Janus offered him a baking apprenticeship and 4 years later, he went from being a humble dish hand to a qualified baker and the production manager of the Bakkerij.

Seven years ago, Jason and Arna opened their very own bakery in Lower Hutt, Fix Federation - famously known by locals for their decadent donuts. 🍩 Come 2022, their bakery was getting a little cramped, and in a full circle moment they took on a second bakery - Janus Bakkerij. With a flare of tradition, Jason and Arna kept some of the recipes passed down through the generations of bakers in the Janus family. 🥰

Inside Janus Bakkerij is a 5-metre-long cabinet, with 5 levels that are filled every day with the likes of donuts, pastries, sandwiches and salads. All made with absolute heart and soul. Their packaged product range line the shelves around the edges of the bakery section. Along the back is a large pie warmer and artisan bread. 🥧🍞

On site they have a cafe kitchen where the chefs whip up the ever-popular eggs benedict with home-made hollandaise sauce, along with the full fix big breakfast and many other delish plates. 🤤

Last year Janus Bakkerij was recognised as having some of the best pies in New Zealand, featuring in a book "New Zealand's Best Gourmet Pies" - a testament to the hard work that Jason and Arna have put into their bakeries.

Guy describes Forage Merchants of Wellington as the general store that's 'always been there' - somewhere that everyone is welcome. 😍

Guy has used his retail marketing background to develop his own brand and highlight the many local, small business entrepreneurs that inspire him. The store is very aesthetically pleasing, with a slightly rustic, warm aged vibe that focuses on elevating the products.

Something you may not know, is that out the back of Forage Merchants is The Shed - an intimate live music venue with 35 seats. 🎵 All door sales go to the artists so that they can continue to do what they love. Guy is also the lead vocalist and guitarist for local shoegaze band Column of Sand. What can't Guy do?!

Guy would love to be known for good coffee ☕ (proudly serving Karamu) and for sourcing the best local products including fresh bread and baked goods. Little Bread Loaf Cinnamon Scrolls have been a favourite since day one.

The greater Wellington region produces an abundance of great artisan products including eggs, milk, cheese, olive oils, chocolate, pickles, coffee, baked goods, chilli oils, sauces, honey and so much more! 🥛🍯

Jojo's Sweet Treats is a whimsical lolly and gelato shop created by Jo. 🍭 They are the only lolly shop in Central Lower Hutt, offering the largest pick and mix. 😋

Jo's original plan was to run a gelato truck that she could park up on the foreshore and near parks - but the logistics pointed her to a much better option, a physical store. JoJo's Gelato had a ring to it, but she decided her love of lollies and dream of owning a lolly store merged into the creation of Jojo's Sweet Treats. ✨

Finding the variety of lollies that she wanted to sell was very challenging, Jo managed to pull off her large range of lollies by working with many different outlets and importers.

Jo likes to stock novel lollies like the super-sized gummies, Dr Pepper cotton candy and globestoppers. She also dabbles in trends like freeze dried candy and freeze dried ice cream. The American candy items are really popular - the newest arrival are the Kool Aid Gummies. There's also the old school Kiwi favourites!

Two years into business, Jo was ready for the next challenge and opened her second store in Upper Hutt. Her Husband and Stepson had just opened their second furniture store Just Furniture to complement their Heart of Rimu Furniture Store - and they kindly offered her a section of their store to expand her business. 🤝

She has now set her sights on Tik Tok - give her a follow jojossweettreats.
