Some of you might have eaten or heard of Okonomiyaki, but did you know that there are 2 types? Osaka-styled and Hiroshima-styled, and each city is very proud of its own creation. If you’re in Hiroshima, try not to tell the locals you prefer Osaka’s Okonomiyaki 😅 Anyway, instead of going to a regular restaurant, I managed to get our tour members’ hands dirty by booking them an Okonomiyaki cooking session. You can make your own Hiroshima-styled Okonomiyaki here. All of us have such a great time, and the Okonomiyaki was really very nice!

Of course no trip to Hiroshima is complete without paying a visit to Miyajima Island. Slightly cloudy day and slightly warm for our tour members but the scenery with the famous Itsukushima Shrine and its torii gate is always beautiful in my opinion. We spent close to 2hrs here, doing some shopping for snacks and gifts as souvenirs. We also tried the famous Miyajima’s oysters as well as the momiji manju which is basically rice cake made from buckwheat.

It’s Day 5 and we’re half-way through our trip already! Time flies indeed! From Kobe, we took an early Shinkansen train all the way to Hiroshima. The whole 300km journey took us only 1hr plus! Immediately after arriving, we quickly took a cab to catch our booked guided tour. Emi was very passionate about Hiroshima and made sure we learnt as much as possible about the history behind Hiroshima. We visited the Atomic Bomb Dome as well as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The tour ended after close to 3hrs and we made our way for lunch at Youki Ramen - one of the best Hiroshima-styled ramens here. Delicious indeed!

On Day 4, we’re bidding goodbye to Kyoto and would be making our way southwest towards Kobe. Yes! We make Kobe our base for travelling and we are staying at Kobe Plaza Hotel West. It was a very early morning for all of us as we have to catch the Shinkansen train to Kobe. We parked our luggage at the hotel and made our way to Kurashiki - a city that was on a wishlist of our tour members. A lovely town indeed! It’s apparently (one of the few) the Venice of Japan? There’s quite a bit of good food here, especially the Onigiri served at Omukun, which features a filling of flowing egg yolk and beef tendons, very yummy indeed! Not to forget Kurashiki’s famous Takomeshi or Octopus Rice. We spent a good afternoon hear, visit the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, with its quaint stores and river canals. Awesome day!

We did slightly different this time, instead of visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine in the morning, we went in the evening, around 5pm. Goodness the crowd still hasn’t dispersed! But I must say… it’s definitely much less than the 10-11am crowd! We walked slightly up the Torii Gates and did pay a visit through the food stalls but we were too full from all the food in Uji! Not to mention, we’re supposed to buy some wagyu beef and cook in the AirBnB later. Yes I’ll be the cook! It’s really nothing much - just salt and pepper but very delicious I must say. We would like our tour members to compare normal wagyu from supermarket to the Kobe wagyu which we will eat when we visit Kobe. Stay tuned!

After Nara, we make our way to Uji, just in time for lunch. We found a local restaurant which serves authentic chasoba (made from matcha). And we also did not forget to dabao some unadon (unagi + rice) as Uji is also famous for that. Of course, we had to stop by to get some matcha ice-cream. Really nonstop eating! We let our tour members Dorothy and Mei Chin to make their way to do another round of shopping (for tea souvenirs!) while Wai Ling and I went around the river for nice walk. Beautiful weather as always whenever we visit Uji!

Our third day in Japan starts with paying a visit to Nara! From Nara station, we took a nice sunny stroll down Sanjodori Shopping Street. Some of you might have seen a popular video of a Japanese uncle and his co-workers pounding mochi with a huge mallet-like pestle - we passed by this shop and it’s called Nakatanidou. We tried to watch a mochi show but it was soooo crowded so instead, we went shopping instead. I also accompanied Wai Ling our tour member to spend more time with the deer in Nara Deer Park. We really enjoyed our time here!

Our second day in Kyoto is really very long… as at 6.00pm, I booked a guided tour for our tour members so that they can learn more in-depth about Kyoto and especially Gion, thus the Geishas in the area. The tour didn’t disappoint and the tour guide is easily the best we have met in our life. We did bump into a total of 2 Geikos and 2 Maikos. We end the day with a simple ramen in Gion area.

After spending almost more than half the day in Arashiyama, we made our way back to Kyoto and had lunch right at Kyoto station. There’s an affordable ochazuke restaurant right here and it was so good! After a light lunch, we went to nearby Shoseien Garden and took a light stroll around the quiet garden, much needed after the large crowd in Arashiyama. This garden was built by the same priest who built the nearby Higashi Honganji Temple. Apparently he built this garden for his own retirement!

We head straight to Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and we reached around 9am on the morning, already the crowd is forming but not as bad. We ate so many things along the way, including some roasted sweet potatoes. The view up on the Observation Deck, overlooking the Katsura River is really unbeatable. Very pretty. We also went on a boat ride along the river right after spending some time by the Togetsukyo Bridge. Many people indeed but the weather really helps! We skipped the Iwatayama Monkey Park… as I too find it a bit underwhelming…

Our AirBnB is located right outside Kiyomizudera, like literally you can walk to the temple within 3mins. That also means that we’re very near to Sannenzaka, the sloping street with its traditional Japanese shophouses. It was early in the morning so the street is not yet packed. To be honest, you don’t want to be here after 10am as the crowd can be crazy…

Right after Kiyomizudera, to keep it chill and easy, I booked for our tour a simple tea ceremony and Japanese sweets (Nerikiri) making session in the center of Kyoto. I’m glad that everyone had fun learning a little about the Japanese culture, especially so when both instructors for the Nerikiri and tea ceremony tried their best and educated us in English. We went for a simple Omurice dinner in Kyoto station before taking a cab back to our AirBnB.

On Day 1, after a long journey from Kuala Lumpur, I finally managed to fetch my latest tour members: Wai Ling, Mei Chin and Dorothy. As mentioned in the previous post, I was late by roughly 10mins due to the train line from Osaka City to Osaka Airport, being obstructed by an object. Anyway, I fetch our tour members safely and we made our way first to Kyoto. As the Haruka train line shares the same obstructed line from Osaka Airport to Kyoto City, our journey was delayed too by around 50mins. Our ladies were definitely slightly tired from the long flight from KL, but we pressed on and first paid a short visit to Kiyomizudera Temple, 5-minute walk from our AirBnB. Lovely weather and we ate soba at a nearby restaurant on Chawanzaka (Teapot Lane).

P/S: They have kindly requested for limiting posts of their photos on social media or at the very least, blurred out their faces. No problem 😎 !

Stayed in Osaka for a few days before going to Osaka Kansai International Airport to receive my three clients from KL who flew from KLIA via Malaysia Airlines - Wai Ling, Mei Chin and Dorothy. Knowing that they are taking a red-eye flight and touched down only at 8.30am, I prepared some simple sandwiches for them. It was a rainy day in Osaka and as I was on my way to the airport, my train was disrupted due to an object obstruction on the track lines ahead. I waited a while, thinking it might resume operations soon but no… in the end, I follow the train staff’s instructions and took a feeder bus to another train station of another train line to get to the airport. I was slightly late but our friends from KL were very understanding and off we went to take the JR Haruka Line to Kyoto to begin our adventures!

Our trip with the young lads from Ipoh has come to an end sadly. I hope that they have thoroughly enjoyed themselves during these short 6D5N with me. Many thanks to Ariff and Ibrahim for being so supportive and obedient during the tour. Everything went by really smoothly because of that. I hope we will stay in touch and wish the two young men all the best in their career and studies. Ganbatte!

Right before we left for Osaka, I arranged a traditional tea ceremony sessions for us. It also includes a session of making traditional Japanese sweets called Nerikiri. It was a very fun experience indeed and we recommend to everyone who is visiting Kyoto to try it! We took a stroll to Kyoto Station, passing by Higashi Honganji Temple. Upon reaching Osaka, we were quite hungry as we didn’t have a proper lunch. Found a good seafood donburi near our accoms in Nishi Umeda.

We’re leaving Kyoto soon! But no visit to Kyoto is complete without first dropping by Kiyomizudera as well as Sannenzaka of the Higashiyama District! Feeling a bit gloomy today as it’s our last day in Japan already, just like the weather. It’s drizzling slightly! After seeing Kiyomizudera, I let the guys to do some last-minute shopping at Sannenzaka area, while I got my coffee fix.

On our last night in Kyoto, brought everyone to Gion Street to take a look at the Geisha culture and see if we can chance upon any Geiko this time. Right after we got off from the bus, we saw a total of 4 Geikos, all rushing to their respective workplace/restaurant. I reminded our friends not to take photos in order to show respect. I remember it was much harder spotting a Geiko working back then like 10 years ago. We strolled around Hanamikoji Street as well as Shirakawa Lane, before deciding to eat simple kebabs for dinner.

What a long day in Arashiyama! We took the Randem Tram Line from Saiin Station to Arashiyama Station early in the morning. As usual, Arashiyama was very crowded. We took the obligatory hike up the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and this time, decided to go to the Observation Deck. Very scenic view of the gorge with the Katsura River. Totally recommended if you’re taking a hike around the area! Then we went to take a boat ride which cost us ¥2000 in total for 3 of us! Quite an effort for all of us but it was a fun 1hr spent! Then we climbed up the mountain of Iwatayama Monkey Park. Honestly, it’s getting more lacklustre to visit the monkeys, not to mention the price tag of ¥600 per pax plus you have to hike up the hill. I’ll probably remove this from my future itinerary when visiting Arashiyama. After the attractions, we had a good halal-certified lunch at Yosiya, where the boys ordered a Curry Wagyu as well as a Curry Chicken Cutlet. Very fulfilling day in Arashiyama!

I’ve been to Nara Deer Park quite a number of times. And I do know that there are signs around the park, reminding people to be careful with the deer, as they might bite or attack you. I usually brushed the warnings off especially the biting part, such lovely creatures why would they bite you. I got bitten….. not once, not twice but thrice by a deer! Goodness 😜 so my advice is take the warnings seriously and be really careful when feeding them!

I personally like to spend more time in Uji, strolling by the Uji River, so I’m very glad that Ariff and Ibrahim also enjoyed the picturesque scenery in Uji. We had lunch here a local restaurant and managed to eat 3 Japanese food in one seating: Soba, Tempura and Unagi and they were all surprisingly good! If you’re ever in Uji, we recommend you to allocate a bit more time here especially if the weather is nice, you won’t regret it!
