I'm saddened to hear of the passing of pop star and then DJ Greg Kihn.
I met Greg in 1999 when he was broadcasting his radio show from inside Studio One at Abbey Road Studios. His radio station was part of MJI - who brought over scores of DJs to broadcast their shows from this legendary location.
I gave the DJs a Beatles tour the day before - and was interviewed by many of them, including Greg, the day after, inside Abbey Road :)
This is Greg with Chrissie Hynde during that broadcast.
Greg was a lovely guy and will be much missed.

I've just seen this letter, handwritten by George Harrison to Stu Sutcliffe.
'John is thinking of replacing Paul on bass, or getting rid of him'(!!)
The letter seems to be authentic. I'm guessing is from January 1st 1961. The Beatles had just finished their first stint in Hamburg, when George, and then Pete and Stu, had been deported. Stu decided to stay in Hamburg a while longer to be with Astrid.

Montagu Square is where Ringo and John both lived on separate occasions, and where Jimi Hendrix lived too!
The current occupier is Henry Rose, a leading tailor, which explains what Eric was doing theee.

July 13th 1954 – one of the most important recording sessions in British rock and pop history – by a Jazz Band!
The Chris Barber Jazz Band record an album for Decca at their studios in West Hampstead. The album is called New Orleans Joys.
Part way through the recording, the band realised they don’t have enough songs to make a full album, so they retire to the Railway Hotel pub next door to discuss what to do. They decide to record some songs they do live as a ‘Breakdown Group’ – this was a part of their concerts when they would allow the brass section a break and play some paired down music, bringing the guitar player to the front (it was seen as a percussion instrument before this) and have double bass (or improvised tea chest bass) and washboard, which would be played using thimbles.
Chris Barber decided he would play bass, and Lonnie Donegan would play guitar. Washboard player Beryl Bryden was called up and summoned to come to the studio from her home in nearby Maida Vale.
One of the songs they recorded was ‘Rock Island Line’ which had been popularised by Huddy Leadbetter, better known as ‘Lead Belly’. It was sang by Lonnie Donegan
The album went on to sell a few thousand copies, not bad for a jazz album, and ‘Rock Island Line’ just seen as an album track. Things changed though, nearly 2 years later. Bill Haley had a UK number one hit with Rock Around the Clock and record companies tried to find a similar record which would have the same impact. Decca then remembered about ‘Rock Island Line’ and released it as a single, credited to The Lonnie Donegan Skiffle Group. It became a huge hit record in the UK, and also ironically, in the US. More importantly, ‘Rock Island Line’ and other ‘skiffle’ songs, inspired thousands of British teenagers to start their own skiffle bands. The bands only need one cheap guitar, and the rest of the instruments could be adapted from household implements. Each song only had 3 or 4 chords to learn, so it was easy to play too. Guitar sales went up from about 2000 a year to 200,000 a year.
Amongst those who played in skiffle bands included: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Mick Jagger, Van Morrison, Jimmy Page, Rod Stewart, Dave Davies etc etc etc.
Skiffle itself died out. Lonnie Donegan went on record novelty songs, but others went onto other things :>)
“Without Lead Belly, no Lonnie Donegan, without Lonnie Donegan, no Beatles.” – George Harrison.

I've honoured to say I have been asked again to be Ringo Starr's 'Peace and Love Ambassador' for London.

The email says: We are grateful for all you do to make Ringo's birthday wish come true - and we are excited to work with you to help create a wave of Peace and Love over our planet this July 7, 2024! We couldn't do it without you!

Ringo will be celebrating in Los Angeles again this year and we will plan on the usual roll out in each country and time zone.

Just like last year, we are asking each Peace and Love Ambassador to arrange a zoom or in-person gathering, record a group "Peace and Love!" at Noon their local time and send us the video. We will then post those on Ringo's Facebook.

We are also furthering Ringo's invitation to everyone everywhere who wants to partake to think, say or post at Noon their local time.

This year we will be outside 3 Savile Row - The Beatles' former 'Apple' HQ - and where of course they played the famous 'Rooftop Concert' Join us at 12 noon to say Happy Birthday to Ringo and Peace and Love to the world.

On my Beatles walk today we saw Giles Martin going into MPL. Paul McCartney was certainly inside as his car was parked opposite.
I wonder what they were talking about ….

THE BEATLES ANNOUNCE NEW “LET IT BE” MUSIC VIDEO
Premiering Tomorrow, the New Video Features Clips from the Restored “Let It Be” Film, Out Now on Disney+
London – May 9, 2024 – Tomorrow (Friday, May 10) at 6am PDT / 9am EDT / 2pm BST, The Beatles will release a new music video for “Let It Be.” The video features clips from the restored 1970 “Let It Be” film, out now on Disney+, along with unseen outtakes from the rushes.
Tomorrow (Friday, May 10), watch/embed The Beatles’ new “Let It Be” music video here: https://TheBeatles.lnk.to/LetItBeMusicVideoPR
First released in May 1970 amidst the swirl of The Beatles’ breakup, the “Let It Be” film, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, now takes its rightful place in the band’s history. Once viewed through a darker lens, the film is now brought to light through its meticulous restoration by Park Road Post Production in the context of revelations brought forth in Peter Jackson’s multiple Emmy Award®-winning docuseries, “The Beatles: Get Back.” Released on Disney+ in 2021, the docuseries showcases the iconic foursome’s warmth and camaraderie, capturing a pivotal moment in music history.
The “Let It Be” film contains footage not featured in the “Get Back” docuseries, bringing viewers firstly into rehearsals, then the studio and finally onto Apple Corps’ London rooftop in January 1969 as The Beatles, joined by Billy Preston, write and record their GRAMMY Award®-winning Let It Be album, with its Academy Award®-winning title song, and perform live for the final time as a group.
In 2021, The Beatles’ Let It Be album was mixed in stereo, 5.1 surround and Dolby Atmos by producer Giles Martin and mix engineer Sam Okell for a range of Special Edition packages released by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe. The album’s Super Deluxe CD, vinyl and digital collections also feature 27 previously unreleased session recordings, a four-track Let It Be EP, and the never before released 14-track Get Back stereo LP mix compiled by engineer Glyn Johns in May 1969.

Now Official
BURBANK, Calif. (April 16) – Today, Disney+ announced that “Let It Be,” director Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s original 1970 film about The Beatles, will launch exclusively on Disney+ May 8, 2024. This is the first time the film is available in over 50 years.

First released in May 1970 amidst the swirl of The Beatles’ breakup, “Let It Be” now takes its rightful place in the band’s history. Once viewed through a darker lens, the film is now brought to light through its restoration and in the context of revelations brought forth in Peter Jackson’s multiple Emmy Award®-winning docuseries, “The Beatles: Get Back.” Released on Disney+ in 2021, the docuseries showcases the iconic foursome’s warmth and camaraderie, capturing a pivotal moment in music history.

“Let It Be” contains footage not featured in the “Get Back” docuseries, bringing viewers into the studio and onto Apple Corps’ London rooftop in January 1969 as The Beatles, joined by Billy Preston, write and record their GRAMMY Award®-winning album Let It Be, with its Academy Award®-winning title song, and perform live for the final time as a group. With the release of “The Beatles: Get Back,” fan clamour for the original “Let It Be” film reached a fever pitch. With Lindsay-Hogg’s full support, Apple Corps asked Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production to dive into a meticulous restoration of the film from the original 16mm negative, which included lovingly remastering the sound using the same MAL de-mix technology that was applied to the “Get Back” docuseries.

Michael Lindsay-Hogg says, “’Let It Be’ was ready to go in October/November 1969, but it didn’t come out until April 1970. One month before its release, The Beatles officially broke up. And so the people went to see ‘Let It Be’ with sadness in their hearts, thinking, ‘I’ll never see The Beatles together again. I will never have that joy again,’ and it very much darkened the perception of the film. But, in fact, how often do you get to see artists of this stature working together to make what they hear in their heads into songs. And then you get to the roof and you see their excitement, camaraderie and sheer joy in playing together again as a group and know, as we do now, that it was the final time, and we view it with full understanding of who they were and still are and a little poignancy. I was knocked out by what Peter was able to do with ‘Get Back,’using all the footage I’d shot 50 years previously.”

“I’m absolutely thrilled that Michael’s movie, ‘Let It Be,’ has been restored and is finally being re-released after being unavailable for decades,” says Peter Jackson. "I was so lucky to have access to Michael’s outtakes for 'Get Back,’ and I’ve always thought that ‘Let It Be’ is needed to complete the ‘Get Back’ story. Over three parts, we showed Michael and The Beatles filming a groundbreaking new documentary, and ‘Let It Be’ is that documentary – the movie they released in 1970. I now think of it all as one epic story, finally completed after five decades. The two projects support and enhance each other: ‘Let It Be’ is the climax of ‘Get Back,’ while ‘Get Back’ provides a vital missing context for ‘Let It Be.’ Michael Lindsay-Hogg was unfailingly helpful and gracious while I made ‘Get Back,’ and it’s only right that his original movie has the last word...looking and sounding far better than it did in 1970.”

“Let It Be,” directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, stars John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, with a special appearance by Billy Preston. The film was produced by Neil Aspinall with The Beatles acting as executive producers. The director of photography was Anthony B Richmond.

“Let It Be” will debut exclusively on Disney+ May 8, 2024.
