October 17th 1963 was a busy day for the Beatles at EMI Studios, Abbey Road. They recorded both sides of their new single, ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ and it’s B Side ‘This Boy’

If that wasn’t enough, they also recorded a Christmas message to be sent to members of the Beatles Fan Club. They would continue to record these discs for the Fan Club for the next 7 years.

I Want to Hold Your Hand was written in the basement of 57 Wimpole Street, where Margaret Elliott, the mother of Jane Asher, had her music room. Paul McCartney had recently moved into the Asher’s house, as he was dated their daughter, Jane. John Lennon visited Paul here on a few occasions, and as he told ‘Playboy’ magazine in 1980:

We wrote a lot of stuff together, one on one, eyeball to eyeball. Like in ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand,’ I remember when we got the chord that made the song. We were in Jane Asher’s house, downstairs in the cellar playing on the piano at the same time. And we had, ‘Oh you-u-u/ got that something…’ And Paul hits this chord and I turn to him and say, ‘That’s it!’ I said, ‘Do that again!’ In those days, we really used to absolutely write like that — both playing into each other’s noses.

Of course I Want to Hold Your Hand became the Beatles first number one hit in the USA.

The Beatles' 'Abbey Road' album was released on September 26th 1969 in the UK. Here is a photo I took of Geoff Emerick, Phil McDonald, Eddie Klein, Ken Townsend, Jeff Jarratt and George Martin on the steps of Abbey Road Studios, on the 25th anniversary of the release of the Abbey Road Album. All of them had a big part to play in the making of the album.

5 Star Review for my London Beatles Walks :)

Absolutely excellent. Richard Porter was extremely knowledgable, interesting and very funny. He opened our eyes to part of the story of the incredible Beatles, and took us to locations in London that breathed life into the music, lives and loves of the Fab Four. Seeing the Abby Road studio was also excellent. One of the funnest and most enlightening activities I've ever done in London.

I'm saddened to hear of the passing of pop star and then DJ Greg Kihn.
I met Greg in 1999 when he was broadcasting his radio show from inside Studio One at Abbey Road Studios. His radio station was part of MJI - who brought over scores of DJs to broadcast their shows from this legendary location.
I gave the DJs a Beatles tour the day before - and was interviewed by many of them, including Greg, the day after, inside Abbey Road :)
This is Greg with Chrissie Hynde during that broadcast.
Greg was a lovely guy and will be much missed.

Oh dear - The Sun 'newspaper' (so-called) are at it again!
This photo is about 2 years old - and it isn't of Paul McCartney - it's the now late Tony Bramwell. Well, it is the Abbey Road crossing - so they got something right!

Big news learnt at the Abbey Road Studios lecture tonight was that Paul McCartney was in the Studios for about a week last month - working on his new album.
Here is a pic I took of Paul another time he went into Abbey Road.

I've just seen this letter, handwritten by George Harrison to Stu Sutcliffe.
'John is thinking of replacing Paul on bass, or getting rid of him'(!!)
The letter seems to be authentic. I'm guessing is from January 1st 1961. The Beatles had just finished their first stint in Hamburg, when George, and then Pete and Stu, had been deported. Stu decided to stay in Hamburg a while longer to be with Astrid.

So there I was outside 34 Montagu Square on my Beatles Walk when Eric Clapton came out the front door!
Montagu Square is where Ringo and John both lived on separate occasions, and where Jimi Hendrix lived too!
The current occupier is Henry Rose, a leading tailor, which explains what Eric was doing theee.
