Fort Leonard Wood was established in the heart of the Ozark Mountains during the winter of 1940 in preparation of the impending entry of the United States into World War II. The site was selected partially based upon the abundant natural water resources and access to U.S. Highway 66. Fort Leonard Wood has a renowned history of training Engineers, Military Police and the Chemical Corps. These three United States Army branches are honored at Mahaffey Museum Complex. Rolla, thirty miles east of Fort Leonard Wood along Interstate 44 in Phelps County is a city engineered for everyone. The community is home to Missouri S&T college which was founded as Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1870.
