5th Annual Light Up Pulaski County Holiday Lights Festivities and Contest Winners Selected
The Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce held its 5th Annual Light Up Pulaski County event, a holiday lights celebration and contest. This is a great opportunity for revisiting traditions and creating memories by loading up family and friends to share in the joy that holiday lights bring. Our event sponsors are Amazon Hub, Laclede Electric Cooperative, Security Bank of Pulaski County, Waypoint United Methodist Church, City of Waynesville MO Municipal Government, and the Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport.
Chamber Executive Director, Cecilia Murray, “As a child my mom would drive around so we could enjoy the Christmas lights. This event brings back special memories. With several new entries this year we spent two evenings judging this year. It is always a fun and adventurous time as the judges travel around the county”
Judging categories were North Pole Award for best residential display that has an organized appearance or theme; Santa’s Helper Award for best decorated non-profit; Keep it Local Award for best decorated business; Northern Lights Awards for best high-tech lights; Spirit of Christmas Award for best traditional decorations and People’s Choice Award, where the community voted. Judges were Paul Shultz from Laclede Electric Cooperative, Rob Wilson from Security Bank of Pulaski County, Deborah Decker from the Pulaski County Health Center, Brett Reith from Waypoint United Methodist Church, Michelle Beckley with Fort Wood Hotels, Doug Potts and Amber Box from the City of Waynesville, and Miriam Jones from the Waynesville-St. Robert Airport. Thank you to Ruby’s Landing for donating the use of their van for the tour and thank you to Don Murray for driving them all around the county! Each winner received a $50 check and a sign to display in their yards or in front of their businesses.
A special award was given to the LaRochelle family this year, the Community Spirit Award. The family has won various awards 4 years in a row. What started as a few strands of lights 20 years ago has turned into the magnificent display that stands today. Dana LaRochelle expresses her “deepest gratitude to our incredible community, church family, and neighbors for coming together to light up Misty Mountain. The community completely blew it out of the park!” She mentions that “the love and support that has been shared has brought so much light during a time that feels especially heavy.”
Secrest Western Store was awarded the Keep it Local Award. This was their 3rd year participating in the holiday lights display contest, with an award every year. Sherrie Norris, owner of Secrest Western Store, states that she “continues to participate in the hope to bring joy to the community, especially to the kids”. This year they are hosting a drawing for kids’ bikes, boy and girl. Names will be drawn December 23rd, visit their store, and enter the drawing before it’s too late!
The Santa’s Helper Award was awarded to the American Legion Post #331. They welcome everyone to come in and walk through to enjoy the lights and decorations. Santa will be visiting for photo opportunities on December 21st from 1 – 3 pm. You are also welcome to take photos anytime during their opening hours, 11 am to 8 pm.
Stevie Olson was awarded the North Pole Award. The Olson family started decorating 19 years ago because of their love for Christmas. They recently moved here and decided to share their joy with their new community. If you got a chance to see their display, you would be amazed to find out that all the lights are measured for perfect alignment!
The Spirit of Christmas Award was awarded to Kenny Allen. The Allen residence has participated in previous years and always enjoys being able to spread holiday cheer to those who need it. This year a classic addition was added, Santa’s new ride!
Britton Hall is looking at two awards this year, the Northern Lights Award and People’s Choice Award. Light Up Pulaski County was the first time the Hall family ever entered a contest for their display. They have continued to participate for the last 4 years. Their family loves driving around to see all the lights and they wanted to provide something special for others in the community who enjoy the same. Be sure to tune into 87.9 when visiting their residence! They are already working on bigger plans for next year!
All participants are encouraged to keep their displays up until December 26th. Go out and check out all the displays, you can find a map on www.lightuppulaskicounty.com. We are grateful to all the participants and sponsors this year and look forward to continuing this holiday event next year!
