🚢 Follow our Tips and Advice for getting the ferry from Skiathos to Skopelos.

This is an integral part of your travel planning to Skopelos, and hopefully this post will help you not have a moment like this.

🫡 Things to remember....

🇬🇷 You are in Greece, things do not run as smoothly as what they might do at home.

⛈️ Although the weather in Greece is normally wall to wall sunshine, there may be a storm which will affect ferry travel. Especially for your return journey, keep an eye on the weather from a couple of days before.

🗓️ Ferry timetables can be very fluid; weather, breakdowns and timetable changes can all affect the time of your ferry departure.

🍷 There are local tavernas and restaurants right beside all of the Ferry Ports. Sit and enjoy the atmosphere while you wait on the ferry. As you see it come into the Port make your way over and walk/drive straight on.

🍻 You are on holidays, there is always a bar by the ferry port where you can relax, people watch and soak up the sun while you wait on the next ferry if things go pear shaped.

🚢 Ferry Ports

Skiathos is simple. There is one ferry port which is about 5 minutes drive from the Airport. You can walk (25 mins), bus (€3) or taxi (€16).

On Skopelos, there are several Ferry Ports, Skopelos Town (Chora), Glossa and Agnontas. If you are arriving into Glossa, a taxi to Skopelos Town will cost €60, you can also get the bus at a cost of €4.60. A taxi from Agnontas to Skopelos town will cost €15.

🕔 Ferry Timings

Ferries run from approximately 7am to 7pm, depending on which port you are departing from.

🚢 Ferry Companies

There are several Ferry companies running services between Skiathos and Skopelos. Seajets, Flying Dolphin being the largest, to Sporades Line which is a smaller company and also Jason Seataxis which is a private sea taxi service.

👛 Ferry Pricing

Expect to pay between €15-€20 as a foot passenger (discounts for children).
A car will cost approximately €25.
The Sea Taxi costs €120 from Skiathos to Glossa.

🛬 Timing with your Flights
This will depend on what type of traveller you are.

If you are like me and quite laid back I would book an early flight out and a late flight home. There should be a couple of ferry options after your plane lands. For getting back to Skiathos on your departure day, I would be booking an early ferry with a good amount of hours before your flight and also have a contingency plan for bad weather, breakdowns.

A much safer option is to enjoy Skiathos the night of your arrival and the night before your departure.

🚘 Where to hire a car

We have hired a car at both Skiathos Airport and also on our arrival in Skopelos. We would definitely recommend hiring at Skiathos Airport.

The main reasons for this...

We booked car ferries for our journeys as from research these are the last to be cancelled if bad weather hits.
Getting from the different Skopelos Ports to your accommodation via public transport can be a bit of a pain. Landing on Skopelos in a car, makes the onward journey much simpler and quicker.
If you are having to change Ports in Skopelos, it is a lot less hassle knowing that you can drive to them.
If you are travelling with children, you will be thankful for an air conditioned car while waiting on your ferry.

🎟️ Booking your Ferry tickets

From our research, ferries can book up quickly during Peak Season so we would recommend booking in advance. We used the Ferryhopper app and found it to be excellent. We were able to download an E-Ticket, and we also paid a little extra to be able to amend our tickets if required. On one occasion we also just popped into the Ticket Office in Skopelos and picked up our tickets.

When planning our first holiday to Skopelos, this was the hardest part to get my head around, but having been twice now it really is very simple.

🇬🇷 How to get to Skopelos 🇬🇷

Getting to Skopelos, the home of Mamma Mia takes a little bit of effort, but, oh my, it is so worth it 🩵

🛬 The island of Skopelos does not have an Airport, you therefore fly into Skiathos, the neighbouring island.

🇬🇷 Remember to comment 'Greece' to not miss out on our other Skopelos travel tips.

We have found flights with easyJet from £100pp and with TUI from £266pp. Don't forget that you don't have to use the same airline for your inbound and outbound flights, we don't even fly from and to the same airport!

🇮🇪 Flying from Ireland?
Unfortunately, there are no direct flights to Skiathos from the island of Ireland 😭 But, don't let this put you off! We travelled to Skopelos twice during the Summer holidays and flew via England with no issues whatsoever. In fact, we never take direct flights during the Summer holidays as we save so much flying via an English airport. We have found flights from England to Skiathos with easyJet in July next year for £100pp. You can book return flights to Manchester from Dublin for just £60 (that is not pp but for a family of 4!) and an overnight stay at the Airport Premier Inn costs just £56. Total cost of travel £516! I haven't included baggage as every family is different, we have travelled with one check in 20kg suitcase, and for our last trip we went hand luggage only!!

🚢 Important Note 🚢
Remember that once you land you will be taking a short 5 minute trip to the Ferry Port to catch your ferry to Skopelos, flights times are therefore important. I would recommend an early flight there and a late flight home. I will be posting about Ferry travel tomorrow.

HOW TO GET TO SKOPELOS ✈️
The closest airport to the island of Skopelos is Skiathos.
EasyJet, Jet2, TUI and British Airways all fly to Skiathos.
Having been to Skopelos twice, we travelled from N.Ireland and flew from Manchester-Skiathos (1st trip July) and Bristol-Skiathos (2nd trip August).

Skopelos is then just a quick 1 hour ferry ride from the island of Skiathos

Ticking off the Bucket List at Mamma Mia Chapel 🎶🎬🎶

🩵 Our Tips for seeing the Chapel....

⛰️ The Mamma Mia Chapel stands on a huge rock and is connected to the main island by a narrow path.

👣There are 220 steps to climb to reach the Chapel perched high above.

🚍 How to get to the Mamma Mia Chapel?
By Bus, by taxi or by rental car. We had a rental car and it was great to have the freedom of time and to explore the rest of the island too!

🫡 Is it a tough climb?
Not at all, the climb really isn't that bad, and the views as you go make it even easier.

🕗 What time to visit?
It is best to go before or after the Bus Tours and Day trippers. Before 9am is perfect.

👛 Bring some pennies
There is a donation tin within the Chapel

🚘 Parking is limited
There is only space for around 10 cars to park next to the Chapel.

📸 Enjoy the walk going up, enjoy the views on the way down.

🕯️Light a candle in the Chapel and pause for thought of a loved one.

🥂 Grab a glass of Prosecco at the little Cafe at the bottom of the rock to celebrate your achievement.

This was our first year experiencing a Private Villa with a Pool, and we have been so blessed to experience it twice 🙏

We really weren't sure if a Pool Villa was going to be a hit, but I think we will struggle to stay in a Campsite or Hotel for future holidays!
