24 islands make up the Sporades archipelago, but only Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos are inhabited. The tourist season here is short, from May to September. There are currently 16 windmills on of which seven are positioned on the landmark hill in Chora. Most of them were built by the Venetians in the 16th century, but their construction continued into the early 20th century. They were primarily used to mill wheat.

They were an important source of income for the inhabitants. Their use gradually declined until they ceased production in the middle of the 20th century. The architecture of each of them is similar, all have a round shape, white colour and a pointed roof and very small windows. Such windmills are found in almost all Cyclades islands.

You might have seen this guy “hanging” outside of souvenir shops but do you know who he is?
Long before the days of television, radio or even cinema a different form of entertainment existed in Greece, derived from folkloric traditions.
It included paper or camel skin - made puppets which were handled by puppeteers who stood behind a white screen, illuminated from the back. Between the figures and the player (who was invisible), were candles or lamps that shed light to the figures and made their silhouettes visible to the audience through the cloth.

Vikos Gorge or Vikos Gap is located in the mountainous area of Epirus, to the northwest part of Greece and it is an extremely spectacular gorge.
In fact, it is the second deepest Gorge in the world, after the Grand Canyon in the USA. The extremely steep walls of Vikos Gorge rise to a height of 1,040 meters in several places, providing breath-taking views of this unique natural phenomenon. Did you know that each Evzone carries the M1 Garrand gun which weighs over five kilograms?
The gun puts enormous pressure on the body as it is slammed into the shoulder at the end of every movement. The gun however plays an important role beyond the ceremony. The soldier on duty, who is dressed in army fatigues, supports the Evzones during their time on duty by controlling crowds around them, adjusting their uniforms and ensuring their well being through the motionless hour in heat, cold and rain.
By hitting the butt of the gun on the ground, the soldier is made aware that the Evzone requires assistance. The soldier will ask the Evzone questions and the answers are communicated by blinking, one blink is ‘yes’, two blinks is ‘no’, three blinks is ‘i don’t know’.
