5/5 Follow The Erlkings to their performance at the Schubertiade Festival
5/5: The performance night has finally arrived. Bryan and The Erlkings are a few minutes out of playing the grand opening act at the Schubertiade Festival in the western Austrian Alps. Backstage of the concert hall, in the artists’ room, there is no talking anymore, the guys are fully focused and concentrating. Meanwhile in the front, the guests slowly fill the seats, and the hall turns quiet. Finally, the curtain opens, and the four talented young musicians walk onto the stage. The Erlkings’ innovative, modern interpretations of Schubert’s historic, artful songs fill the entire concert hall. It’s not often that a bunch of young and upcoming artists appear on such an internationally renowned stage. But they did it, and the audience is loving every minute of it. We take a bow and salute Bryan, Ivan, Simon, and Thomas!

4/5 Follow The Erlkings to their performance at the Schubertiade Frstival
4/5: “If you like Baguettes, go to Paris. If you like Franz Schubert, come to the Schubertiade,” This festival means a lot to Bryan Benner and The Erlkings. Featuring the world’s best Lieder performers as well as newcomers, no other festival presents so many song recitals in such a short period of time. For him, performing at this Schubert festival means celebrating his beloved music amidst an incredibly discerning audience of classical music lovers. “There is nothing I can think of that excites me more than being in such a company.”
For the American-born singer and songwriter who has chosen Vienna as his new home, Schubert’s music is a passion he discovered when arriving in Austria nearly a decade ago. It took a spirited journey across several continents from a young, talented boy from Florida to becoming one of the most sought-after, tradition-breaking, and innovative Franz Schubert interpreters. But today, together with his band The Erlkings, he made it to the big stage of classical songs as the opening act of one of the most important Schubert festivals in the world. “To be honest, if I wasn’t performing on the stage today, I’d be very happy to be sitting with the audience,” he humbly says.

3/5 Follow The Erlkings on their discover tour of the Bregenzerwald region
3/5: “Woah, this tastes like fire!” Bryan Benner and his band The Erlkings are having a sumptuous lunch and tasting at the Mountain Distillery & Gasthaus Bergbrennerei Löwen in Au. The guys are fully indulging in what this inn with over 120 years of history has to offer including their home-made whiskey. The restaurant serves local foods, and the distillery produces some of the finest regional herbal schnapps, bitters, vermouth, and whiskey.
The Erlkings are enjoying a day off in the Alpine surroundings of the Schubertiade Festival, which is this intimate, yet international festival celebrating Schubert’s timeless music. “Whenever I’m here, I always have to think about Beethoven and his song cycle ‘An die Ferne Geliebte’ (To the Distant Beloved) where he says: ‘Where the mountains so blue, through the grey foggy dew, look down on me, where the sun shines with love, from the fields from up above, here I should be.’” In the 23 villages comprising the Bregenzerwald region, there is a special relationship between art and nature. Here, locals have always lived in harmony with the Alpine landscape, and it is part of their philosophy to look after and respect what mother nature has to give. The creative results from this region are quite something to behold, be it in music, art, architecture, design, or cuisine. And Bryan, an artist himself, feels this deep connection of nature and art here.

2/5 - Follow The Erlkings to their performance at the Schubertiade Festival
2/5: “Where only the best play!” Bryan Benner and his band The Erlkings have just arrived at the Angelika-Kauffmann-Hall set in the Alpine village of Schwarzenberg. This acoustically impressive hall sits right in the middle of a meadow with views to dream of. Walking down the aisle towards the stage gives the boys goosebumps of excitement. The annual Schubertiade Festival, where Bryan and his colleagues are the opening act, will start the next day. “Anyone who is interested in getting a good overview of what classical singing and chamber music has to offer, should come here, take in three, four or five performances, and is guaranteed to get very different programs and without question some of the best performers from all over the world.”
Originally, a Schubertiade was an intimate house soirée, where Viennese composer Franz Schubert’s music was exclusively played. Schubert was rather poor most of his life. He famously crashed with his friends, and for the longest time, he didn't even have his own piano. During his lifetime his Kunstlieder (art songs) were mainly heard by a small group of dedicated friends at those musical soirées, where people would dance, sing, play charades, drink, and read poetry, while the music man was sitting at the piano, playing his latest works. Today, the term Schubertiade still refers to intimate concerts and festivals. And the most well-known and experience-worthy is the Schubertiade Festival in Austria's Alpine region Vorarlberg, where Bryan and The Erlkings will perform.

1/5 Follow The Erlkings to their performance at the Schubertiade Festival
1/5: “Soundcheck is done, sounded good!” Bryan Benner is holding his beloved guitar in his hand and nodding to his fellow band members The Erlkings. He is standing on one of his favourite stages in the western Vorarlberg region in Austria, getting ready for their opening performance at the Schubertiade Festival. It’s been a long-time coming that the American musician living in Austria made it to perform at this renowned classical musical festival in the middle of the pristine Austrian Alps. And now he is here, as the opening act!
The Erlkings are the hottest group out there right now, creating a new sound of the classic Schubert songs with their voices, guitar, cello, tuba, drums, and vibraphones. Everyone - even the more traditional Schubert follower - looks forward to hearing their music at the opening night. The Schubertiade festival celebrates original but also new interpretations of Franz Schubert’s art songs in the western region called Vorarlberg. Join Bryan and The Erlkings to their gig.
Keep an eye out for our next four posts for behind-the-scenes videos and stories from the festival. Oh, and this might include some whiskey and lots of singing.
