I see people (youtube "experts") "baton" wood with knives to test for durability in "survival" situations. It's hard for me to envision a survival situation in which I'd have a clean cut on one end of a piece of wood to start the batoning process. I suppose it's a test of a knife's ruggedness... so why not drop it from a moving automobile? Or drop a cinder block on it? My point: If splitting wood is critical to your existence, wouldn't it be prudent to put an axe or a hatchet in your pack.
