I see people (youtube "experts") "baton" wood with knives to test for durability in "survival" situations. It's hard for me to envision a survival situation in which I'd have a clean cut on one end of a piece of wood to start the batoning process. I suppose it's a test of a knife's ruggedness... so why not drop it from a moving automobile? Or drop a cinder block on it? My point: If splitting wood is critical to your existence, wouldn't it be prudent to put an axe or a hatchet in your pack.

I've been working to "repurpose" gear. This project is one that's been on my mind for a long time (I was young and poor and really didn't know where to start). Now that I have everything I need (in duplicate) and most things I really want, I've been working to see if I could come up with a primer for new campers... save money, gear up. My latest find: Cafe Steamers by Healthy Choice. I am dieting and eating them. They come with a terrific microwaveable safe bowl that weighs 26 grams and would work great for backpacking. It's also large enough to use as a small plate. Available at big box grocery stores for about $2.50. That's for the meal (250 calories or less depending on your choice). Keep the bowl and grab a spork from Taco Bell the next time you get a burrito. Lightweight and cheap mess kit -- especially if you're already eating the stuff.

Just got back from a run last week on the Eleven Point. Trip was a short one and the stretch paddled was Thomasville to Cane Bluff. We got a late start and fishing was limited to save time. Goggle eye (rock bass) were ON the spawn. Successful lures were mostly 3" tubes worked across the bottom on rock walls. Smallmouth were beginning to bite, but they're a little late spawning this year. I expect this week and next will bring them out.
