Spirit's last time to be seen in the Bay for six months: The passenger ship Carnival Spirit leaves the port of Mobile Saturday afternoon, marking the end of passenger ship cruising out of Mobile until later in the year. Spirit’s final cruise out of Mobile was a six day trip to the Bahamas which ended with the ship’s arrival back in port early this morning. Moving at 14 mph, Spirit begins a day’s trip to Tampa. From there, it sets sail on a sixteen day one-way voyage to Seattle. Spirit will remain based in Seattle until October, running round trip tours of Alaska before returning to resume cruising out of Mobile late in the month. Spirit’s last voyage before leaving for the Pacific Northwest for several months: The passenger ship Carnival Spirit, sailing under the flag of Bahamas, heads out of Mobile Bay late Saturday afternoon. Moving at 13 mph, the ship begins a seven day voyage to the Bahamas with arrival at Bimini Sands Resort Monday. According to an itinerary, this is Spirit’s last voyage out of Mobile before being relocated to Seattle where it will provide tours of Alaska during the summer. During Spirit’s absence, there will be no commercial passenger ship service out of Mobile. Spirit is scheduled to depart for Seattle from Tampa on APR 7th with the first trip to Alaska starting APR 23rd. Spirit’s first trip out of the port of Mobile after returning from the Pacific Northwest is OCT 26th, when it’s scheduled to begin a tour of the western Caribbean. Setting the record straight...

You’ve seen the headlines and stories about the real estate market being turned on its head because of the recently announced lawsuit settlement. Colleen and I have been getting questions from people asking what it means. Would you believe that we think many, maybe even most, real estate sales going forward will happen much the way they do now?

Here’s our take:

Gulf coast easter egg hunt: Palm Sunday in Fairhope is marked by a civics lesson for children about flag etiquette along with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by an Easter Egg hunt at American Legion Post 199. Sponsored by the Legion’s Auxiliary Unit, hidden eggs are in abundance along the edge of Mobile Bay. Gift basket raffles and food are part of the activities, along with photo opportunities with the Easter Bunny. The flag lesson comes courtesy of Legion member Ed “JuJu” Lessard, Fairhope’s Veteran of the Year for 2023. The Auxiliary Unit’s members seldom get recognition for what they do, but are typically behind the scenes of nearly all Legion events, working actively to ensure success. This is one of the many groups of volunteers Fairhope is lucky to have…

Dinner fun on Alabama's Gulf coast...

Answering a key question about Mr. Spud’s: Fairhope folks know that Mr. Spud’s has some of the best fried dishes around, especially seafood. But is healthy eating possible here? And what about taste? Does healthy have to mean unsatisfied? I get the answer last night when Colleen and I stop by for dinner. As much as those shrimp and oysters tempt…and oh my, the Spud Burger and onion rings call at me, too--I wind up ordering the pineapple grilled chicken breast ($14.99) which they’ll blacken for an additional buck. A salad and corn are my sides, while Colleen orders the grilled chicken strips ($14.99) which many people get fried. This meal turns out to be a winner, and not just because of the entree. Chilled and fresh as can be, my salad is outstanding. As a side note, order a salad and add a bowl of homemade potato soup or gumbo, and you’ve got a serious meal. Mr. Spud’s makes their dressings; I pick ranch for my salad, and it’s excellent. Tender and full of flavor, the chicken breasts are delicious. And like most other entrees here, you get plenty of food. A to-go box is in our future; I get so much chicken that some winds up coming home to go over a salad for lunch. Same with Colleen and her chicken strips, which she gets regularly. Jason, our server, is friendly and fun and makes sure we have everything we need. At $37.03 without tip, we manage not to break the bank while having a meal that tastes excellent, is filling and is healthy. I know folks who only go for fried instead of grilled. And I’ll admit that--while the fried shrimp and oysters here are awesome--I don’t feel like we compromised on our meal at all by taking the grilled route. Once again, Mr. Spud’s manages to deliver another totally satisfying meal. Would definitely get this again…

17/03/2024

Julwin’s goes ‘After Dark’: If you’ve been around Fairhope a few years, you may remember Steak Night, the popular once per month evening meal service at Julwin’s, Baldwin county’s oldest restaurant. Steak night started in 2013 as a date night for couples and has come and gone over the years, having ended most recently in February, 2020 (Julwin’s briefly offered evening service last summer, but that was temporary and didn’t involve a special menu like Steak Night). Now, owner David Jewett says the time has come to bring back what many Fairhope residents still tell him they miss. Jewett says Julwin’s After Dark will make its debut APR 19th and will take place the third Friday of each month thereafter. After Dark will have its own menu with Chef Aron Heckler bringing special touches to, not just steak, but other menu options including seafood and whatever entree the Chef conjures up. Steak Night fans don’t need to worry; After Dark’s menu will include an eight ounce filet plus 14 ounce ribeye featuring grass fed Hereford beef, known for its flavor and tenderness. But Jewett says don’t be surprised if redfish, black grouper, veal or maybe even lamb chops show up as an option during After Dark. Scallops are on the menu, too. Other key points about After Dark:

• Reservations only
• 5pm ‘til 8
• BYOB (no cork fees)
• Discount for cash

With the debut of After Dark still a month off, early indications are that it’s going to be a success--Jewett says he’s already getting reservations. Exterior photo shot from Julwin’s, approximately six feet away…

Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival 2024: Huge turnout in perfect weather Saturday for the second and final day of the Festival. Congratulations to the City of Fairhope and its many departments, the Festival Foundation, Eastern Shore Art Center, local businesses and scores of other volunteers who did such a great job. A lot of logistics have to come together to pull off an event this size. Saw some really nice art and talked with friendly artists. Lots of people use the shuttles and take advantage of another great idea: The parking area for golf carts. Phooey to the weather for canceling Sunday. But as one artist tells me, “we’re used to it. Happens all the time.”
