A high percentage of crimes and assaults take place in transitional spaces.
Transitional spaces are areas where you must pass through to get from one area relatively safe to another. These areas include stairwells, parking lots, garages, and usually, they are not possible to avoid.
Mitigate your risk by being aware, assessing the space you are about to enter from a safe distance and moving with a sense of purpose and belonging, while spending as little time in transitional spaces as possible. Consider moving through these spaces with others if possible; if not, and things seem out of the norm, avoid them at all costs.
Flooding from a hurricane can cause massive contamination risk. Take extra caution by using bottled water until the “all clear” is given by officials. As a last resort, boil water for at least one minute (3 min if at altitude) before consuming.
Be careful of personal water filtration devices; only use in a survival situation.⠀

If you are trapped in a crowd rush, don’t try to go against the flow. Once the crowd moves to a choke point fighting can cause you to fall, which is what often leads to death. Wait for the surge to pulse and then move to the side as quickly as possible to escape.
By design, a headrest in a car is almost always detachable and pointed at the end for an excellent reason. If you are trapped in a car, and the doors won’t open, remove the headrest and smash the window with it to escape. Hopefully, you never have to use this trick, but in an emergency, stay calm and know that you have a means of escape.
Next time you check into a hotel, request a room on floors 2-6 or “The Safe Zone.” This is based on the typical firetruck ladder being 105 ft. or the ability to reach up to the 7th floor of a building and elevator considerations if they malfunction or shut down. Ground-floor windows and doors are more likely to be broken into, so avoid the ground floor.

Tunnel vision is a fight-or-flight response that occurs when your pupils widen and allow more light to pass to the iris.
The result actually improves visual acuity of distant vision but your peripheral field will be narrowed. This occurs along with increased heart rate and other symptoms of adrenaline rush when our body senses a threat. ⠀
If it doesn’t happen to you in an emergency you are in the small minority of people so you must prepare for the likelihood.
Small exercises like visualization can go a long way. Think about places you often find yourself and think about what you would do in a variety of emergencies. Go over these plans and think of improvements and contingencies as much as possible. It won’t prevent the biology but it will help you react with purpose and hopefully increase your chances of survival and safety.
One of the most vulnerable locations for a person is in their vehicle. More than 80% of all kidnappings occur while in transit, as well as carjackings, smash and grabs, and armed robberies.
AVOID DRIVING INTO FLOOD WATERS! If you must as a last resort, drive on the centermost portion of the road. Roads are constructed with a “crown” so the most shallow water will be in the center.

When assessing someone that may be experiencing a medical emergency, keep in mind the levels of human normal that will help determine if or how fast next level care is needed. If observation tells you that someone is clearly out of the “norm” of these levels, its a good indication that this truly is a medical emergency and not a minor event. Always take a second to analyze a situation before rushing into treatment that is either not needed or could cause more harm.

With the changing of seasons, wood and metal materials can contract and expand leaving weak points. This is most apparent in overused doorways including the deadbolt and locking mechanisms. An annual check for these issues is simple but impactful. Simply open the door and make sure that when the bolt is open, it extends to at least 1 inch and is sturdy. Test for any wobble. If it is loose you probably need a new deadbolt.

Social engineering is the art of manipulating people so they give up something important like money or information. The picture above is a great example. By not asking for money this person is playing on human empathy and eventually someone will give him a book. This act will generate a conversation where more layers of empathy from the beggar are added and eventually he will ask the book giver for money who will most likely give in to emotion.
Social engineering is complex and takes time and effort. The more important the information, the more time bad actors will devote to cornering the weakness of a victim and acting on it. Keep your guard up at all times, even with people you may know well. Meet new people and get to know them but always limit how much personal information you want to give them until you know they have no malicious motives.

Rule of thumb, you should always try to keep on eye on anyone in your house. Regardless, a window lock is something we don’t think of often but could be a natural entry point for a bad guy. Safe practice, always check them after any non-family/friend has been in your house. ⠀

If you ever get in your car and notice your gas tank has mysteriously gone to Empty without being driven, you may be in danger. By syphoning gas an attacker can control the movements of a victim. You can be forced to a nearby gas station that could be staged for an attack or it can leave you stranded in a dark parking lot. Whatever the case, if this happens and it is obvious, be safe and move to a public area or lock your doors and call for help ASAP.

Often times it’s human nature to take the path of least resistance. Putting a decoy safe in an obvious place can fool someone robbing your house and they will most likely focus on this rather than look through your house for other valuables. By having something that will occupy a few minutes of their time will mitigate the chances of them finding your valuable items elsewhere and gives more time for a police response if you have an alarm system in place.

Ride with friends. Make sure you have radios. I’ve seen a few videos this week of some situations so I decided to share ours from last weekend. We were casually riding through a meadow, I went left, he went right. I was waiting for him to come over a knoll and he never did. My first instinct was, ah he buried his sled. I trusted my instincts, so I turned back. I looked over to see a ski in the air. I bolted over. I don’t see his head, all I see is his feet kicking. My heart sank. I just start digging. What we didn’t know is he actually was “hot mic’d”. I was trying to mic our other buddies for help. Thank god they were listening, and caught wind of some grunts and a faint help on the radio. Within seconds, help had arrived. We were able to lift the sled off of him and drag him out. What was a couple minutes probably felt like a lifetime. Quick thinking and trust those feelings.
