TRAVEL TIP: Getting That Upgrade. Tip 2 - Smile - People respond well to people they like. Give a genuine smile when you approach the check-in desk and you'll be surprised how far that can go. Make sure it is a genuine smile though!

TRAVEL TIP: Getting That Upgrade. Tip 1 - Dress Appropriately - If you show up at the check in counter dressed smart casual or better, you are far more likely to snag that rare on-departure upgrade. Remember you can always get comfortable and change into those track pants and t-shirt onboard the plane. The slight inconvenience of dressing smartly could be worth it, especially on those longhaul flights!

ACCOMMODATION RECOMMENDATION # BRISBANE: Our next BNE Hostel recommendation follows on perfectly from our post last week about how much everyone loves a roof-top terrace!

Chill Backpackers Brisbane is located perfectly on Upper Roma Street amongst a selection of BNE's best hostels. Chill offers great service, very comfortable accommodation and an ideal location - short walking distance to the city and Caxton Street.

But Chill offer a Roof-top terrace with an awesome view of Brisbane that really differentiates themselves from other BNE Hostels! It makes for a great atmosphere...

TRAVEL TIP: Although Qantas' budget airline Jetstar cops a bit of flack at times, it can be a great airline to fly. You won't always see it flying "on time" (which is why I took this photo:) ) but prices are good and routes are extensive. Remember to always check-in early and always ask for exit rows. They are free at check-in if available and the extra space is worth the polite question. Rows 1, 12 and 13 are the desired rows!

Also remember not to pack too heavy as they are quite diligent when it comes to the weight of both checked and carry-on baggage.

WHAT TO DO IN MELBOURNE: You may laugh at the idea that a single horse race can gather so much attention all throughout Australia. Although the race is great, it is really the entire week that makes this event so great!

People flock from all over Australia & the world to join in the week-long festivities. The beer gardens are full, the sun looks like it is going to be out, the cafe's are packed and everyone is here for a good time!

If you are in Melbourne this week then make sure you join in the fun, especially on Tuesday!

TRAVEL TIP: A very important message about securing your luggage when traveling. This clip shows how easily a luggage zipper can be tampered with. We suggest securing your zipper to a fixed point on your luggage so that the zipper cannot be used to re-seal the luggage if this kind of tampering occurs.

Remember, "the contents of your luggage are your responsibility no matter how they got there".

JOB ADVICE: You have arrived for your Working Holiday, you have partied hard for the first week or so and now you must seek an income to facilitate your new lifestyle... What day is PAY DAY and HOW LONG will I have to wait? A common stress shared by many Working Holiday Club members! Most companies pay in one of three ways:

1) PAY WEEKLY: This is usually the most desirable pay cycle as you will receive a cash injection weekly! Favoured by the loose at heart & loose with the shouts!
2) FORTNIGHTLY PAY: The middle ground option, you will need to develop budgeting skills but will not have to wait too long to see the money come in!
3) MONTHLY PAY: This often frightens the exuberant travellers (most WHC members). If you are not good at budgeting then you will live the like absolute royalty in the first week of your pay and then struggle for the remaining three...

Make sure that you budget so that you have enough money to work through to your first pay day.

Or alternatively... Seek a job earlier. The sooner you begin earning the local currency the better!

BUDGET TIP OF THE WEEK

Free WIFI Points: There are numerous places you can log on to free WIFI connections that will save you purchasing expensive data plans in Australia. A few of the more common locations that all travelers would frequent include:
- McDonalds Restaurants
- Starbucks Coffee Shops
- Gloria Jeans Coffee Shops
- Public Libraries

Another hidden gem is Hotel Lobbies. You can stop in at most reputable hotel chains, order a coffee or a cool drink and sit in luxury using their free WIFI. Hotel lobbies also contain access to business centres if you need to print or scan documents but this may be for a small fee.

TRAVEL TIP: Australia is a great place to visit and you must experience all this amazing country has to offer. But it can be expensive and chew through your savings.

The tip is to find work as soon as possible. But not just the usual boring working holiday maker jobs. They can tie you to one place, be rather inflexible and are not the exciting experience you are looking for.

If you really want to see Australia and experience all Australia has to offer, travel Australia WITH WORK!

Many positions offer you the opportunity to move around Australia within the same role. Live-in positions are also an excellent opportunity to save your hard-earned funds for experiencing this great country and allow you to meet like-minded travelers.

LIKE, SHARE and keep in touch with the Working Holiday Club for exciting roles that give you both the ability to travel and offer live-in positions.

JOB ADVICE: When you start work in Australia, you need to arrange a Superannuation account. Australian employers are currently required to contribute 9.5% on top of your salary toward your future pension in Australia. Most employers will ask you which superannuation account you would like to use (Superannuation Choice form) but we recommend you select the first employer's standard account and then use that for every job whilst in Australia. Many of our members recommend Australian Super http://www.australiansuper.com/ and REST http://www.rest.com.au/ . Keeping the same account throughout your employment in Australia means you have all of your entitlements in one place.

The best part of receiving the Superannuation contribution as a Working Holiday Maker is that when you leave Australia you can apply to get that money paid back to you since you won’t be collecting a pension in Australia! Most people forget to claim this back and the government simply holds it until it is claimed (if ever).

To claim the entitlements back from the Australia Taxation Office when you leave Australia, simply go to https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/International-tax-for-individuals/In-detail/Super/Super-information-for-temporary-residents-departing-Australia/

VISA ADVICE: Applying for a Working Holiday in Australia is a very quick and simple process and is often approved in just a few days (if eligible & completed correctly).

If you are between the age of 18 - 30 and have a passport from a nominated country (see link) then you may be just a few clicks away from beginning your Working Holiday adventure down under.

There is no need to pay an agency to organise a Visa for you. The Australian immigration website is a simple and informative website that will provide you with a step-by-step breakdown to applying for your WH Visa.

If you would like any additional advice, please feel free to privately Facebook message us here at Working Holiday Club, we are happy to help.

New systems and technology, are allowing Australia to develop the world's most electronically sophisticated immigration entry system for visitors. Read more about Australia's entry system.
