RIL Uncle Gabby. 🤙🏽 One of the last of the original great Waikiki Beach Boys. His daughter Pinoi Makalena has not only been a dear friend but also a surf mentor. I never got to surf Waikiki with Uncle Gabby, but Coach Cat did (read below) I did get to spend some time with him at home in The Valley and I’m grateful for that.
I don’t know how to put it into words… but just being in the room with him… It was something special and I was always star struck. In my eyes he was the epitome of Hawaii, Aloha and Surf. I am so lucky to have been able to experience Hawaii with the Makalena’s. A Hui Ho Gabby Makalena.

When I first moved to Oahu as a teenager and saw my first surf lesson being given in Waikiki, I was so blown away. I had never seen that before. At that time there were no surf schools or internet to guide you. If you wanted to learn how to surf you got on a board and struggled your ass around the ocean for years thinking you were going to suck for life. If you could get your hands on a surf video you were lucky. I thought The Beach Boys and Girls were so cool. They had really figured it out and had the best job ever. I wanted to be like them. Uncle Gabby Makalena was the best surf instructor I ever saw and I watched him do his thing everyday through the decades. Cheers to you Uncle and thank you for all the lessons you taught me and for the life I have now. Aloha ‘oe
