To close out this week here is one last shot of that epic sunset I caught over the colorful aspens and the ranches on Wilson Mesa.
Wilson Mesa was named this because it sits right below Wilson Peak (14,017'), which both that peak and Mount Wilson (14, 256') are named after Allen David Wilson, an American cartographer who joined the Hayden Geological Survey and led an exploration party across western Colorado in the 1870s.
He ended up being the first known person to summit several 14ers, including Mount Wilson, and went on to chart the topography of many of the state’s highest mountains.
The original indigenous name for the mountain was Shandoka, which translates to "Storm Maker", a reference to the peak's effect on local weather patterns.
Some though have suggested Wilson Peak be renamed after Wilson’s companion and younger half-brother, Franklin Rhoda, since he made many first ascents in the San Juan Mountains, since it's weird to have two mountains named after the same person that are so close to each other, but the Wilson name stuck for both peaks.
I hope that everyone has themselves a fantastic 4th of July Weekend!!
