(3)

How many social media posts that start with “I’m going to (insert city on other side of the globe here), where do I go to eat/drink/get a cocktail/find cool things around the city?” have you seen? Bartender Atlas filters out the noise for you. We all know that a good bartender is better than any online review or tourist guide. By looking at our website, you already know someone in the city you are

visiting. While you are sitting across from them ask what else you should be doing in that town, or where they would be if they weren’t working (but please don’t be a creep). These people have shared this information, in their own words. A community of people make this wacky world a stronger place The community of bartenders is a strong one. Bartenders are generally chatty folk with a little bit of knowledge about a lot of things, especially in their hometowns. Go visit them, you can find them here. If you are are a bartender who would like to be on the site, please fill out the form: http://bartenderatlas.com/join

TORRES BRANDY ZERO CHALLENGE is back and WE ARE SO EXCITED!

We were lucky enough to attend the global finals for this competition in Barcelona back in March and let us tell you: it is awesome!

What we love about this challenge is that it is NOT a cocktail competition. The focus of Torres Brandy Zero Challenge is sustainability which can mean a whole lot of different things depending on where you live and work and the challenges you face there.

This competition is open to everyone in the hospitality industry who has a sustainable idea that they want to make real. This means all of you working in hotels, bars, restaurants, cocktail bars and cafes.

To enter TBZC, you need to submit a sustainable project idea. This is any project that has a specific and sustainable goal for improving the hospitality industry, with a socio-environmental impact and is feasible to put into practice.

The grand prize for the winning project is a whopping 30K Euros to put towards making your project come to life.

This is your chance to pitch your wildest sustainable dream. What could you do or create for your bar to make it better in a sustainable way? What could you create to make your community better? We want you to think BIG and then think BIGGER for this idea that you want to present. In the coming weeks, we will be sharing stories of past submissions that brought the competitors to the global finals.

HOW TO APPLY: Register at https://torresbrandyzerochallenge.com/ by filling out the form and explaining your idea with a short video. Deadline for submission is November 30th at 11:59pm EST.

This challenge is open to hospitality people working in United Kingdom, Lithuania, United States, Spain, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Finland, Norway, Germany, Romania and China.

Each country will be holding a national competition with 4 finalists in early 2024 to determine one winner. One winner from each country will then head to Barcelona in March to present their project at the global competition.

Questions? Please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to support and help you with your ideas.

In fact, we shouldn't.

You can run a cocktail competition without first requiring the bartenders to create a cocktail in order to be chosen to participate. Cocktail creation is a big process. It takes a lot of time and money and a lot of work. Asking bartenders to create a cocktail for your brand in order for the chance to be chosen to compete means you are asking them to work for free. There are many ways that you can run a cocktail competition without requiring this free work ahead of time.

You should not be asking anyone to judge a cocktail competition for free. You have asked this industry leader who has spent years of their lives to learn and become experts in the field to then spend hours of their time... for what? These people need to be compensated for their time - with money. Yes, a bottle of a fancy spirit is nice but those bottles don't pay our bills. No one should be working for free.

Not every educational event is a Masterclass and you don't have to call it that. Is there an actual "master" leading the class? Is it an actual class? Bartenders are thirsty for knowledge but this thirst is for topics that are relevant to their own lives. Hearing a talk about how to open a bar in Singapore may not be relevant to folks in North America. Learning about a specific brand and getting to taste the products are wonderful but how can you dive deeper? We need to push these educational opportunities to go beyond the basics and to be relevant to the people in the room.

Not every global initiative makes sense in every country. We all live in different cities. We all have different ways of drinking, of what we're drinking, of how we are drinking. Let's push brands to create initiatives that are better suited for the cities they are participating in.

Us 40+ year old people shouldn't be making the decisions of what we think the bartenders in our communities want. Your PR/marketing agency usually has no business telling a bartender what they should do and how things should be unless they have real-life bar experience (which they usually don't). We should be speaking to the young bartenders in our community and be asking them what they want from us and from brands.

WE’RE BACK with a new season of an audio documentary: THE SHAFT.

This time around Josh does his best to find out everything he can about The Shaft. Oh you don’t know what the Shaft is? Neither did he until about 2 years ago. Our first Episode of The Shaft gives you the background as to how we found out this drink exists.

Over the course of the next few weeks we will have 4 more episodes explaining the origins and evolution of The Shaft. You will get to hear from dozens of bartenders, brand reps, baristas and cocktail enthusiasts about where they think The Shaft came from, who created it and maybe most importantly (maybe not important at all) which city The Shaft belongs to.

We want to thank Kahlúa and Corby Spirit & Wine for financial help in bringing this to life as well as Axxnpact Studio for help with production. A huge thanks also to all of the bartenders from Calgary and Victoria who put up with Josh bugging you in the middle of your shift.

The Shaft is available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts as well as via Simplecast here:

The Shaft is a 5 part audio documentary from Bartender Atlas. Josh Lindley seeks out the story of The Shaft, hometown cocktail of Victoria and Calgary (both?). In it he follows the story of the drink as well as the attitudes of the bartenders and the cities that call the drink their own. Can a city....

Announcing October's Independent Study Day taking place on Tuesday, October 29th at . This is our 10th Independent Study Day of 2024!

Every month we choose a theme or topic for ISD based on the suggestions that we receive from guests at the events. Suggestions have continuously been for more hands-on techniques and asking about how to approach cocktail competitions. Since starting ISD we have been encouraging everyone in attendance to make a drink at some point so they and everyone else in the room can learn and grow together.

This month we are bringing this all together with the theme: JUST MAKE A DRINK! This is going to be a hands-on ISD that will include drink making, talking about spirits and cocktail competitions. There will be coaches for the event guiding us along including brand ambassadors Marty Pineault, Bre Fedele and Darnell Jarvis who all come from the bartending world before taking their brand jobs.

As always, doors open at 12pm. At 12:30pm Josh will give a short talk before we get down to business.

Space for this event is limited. If you would like to attend, you MUST RSVP by filling out the form here: https://bartenderatlas.com/isd . All confirmed guest must bring a food donation for the .

We will broadcast Josh's talk on Instagram Live but the rest of the event needs to be enjoyed in-person.

A reminder that November's Independent Study Day will be the LAST one of 2024. November’s ISD is going to be a special one and you must have attended at least one ISD in the past to be able to attend.

Big thanks to this month's sponsors: Patron Tequila, Angel's Envy and Grey Goose. We are so excited to have you take part this month.
