We all know that a good bartender is better than any online review or tourist guide. By looking at our website, you already know someone in the city you are visiting. While you are sitting across from th

The Cointreau Margarita Challenge is back! And it's bigger than ever for Canada! This year, 10 Canadian bartenders will be chosen to compete in Toronto. The top 3 winners will receive a cash prize and the 1st place winner will then head to Latin America to participate in the regional final in April. A winner from that will then head to the global competition taking place in June in France.

This year's theme is: No Waste Margarita Challenge - from Fruit to Leaf.

Cointreau wants to challenge you to use every part of your ingredients to create the most sustainable drink in that glass. They want you to be innovative with your Margarita recipe – using every part of a fruit—from flesh to peel to leaves – with at least 25 ml of Cointreau L'Unique and salt. Other than that, let your creativity loose!

What does sustainability mean in mixology?
Sustainability is not only reducing waste but also reconsidering how we interact with ingredients, techniques and the resources involved:
1. Respect the ingredients: Make the most of the available resources, from peels to seeds up to derivatives such as pulps or herbs.
2. Reduce carbon footprint: Minimize carbon footprint using local ingredients, recycled ingredients and techniques that optimize resources.
3. Educate the consumer: Show how enjoying a good cocktail can go together with taking care of the planet.
4. Promote sustainable creativity: Transform the ordinary into extraordinary through innovation.

To enter this challenge you must post a video and/or photo of your creation with a bottle of Cointreau on Instagram tagging and fill out the form on the Cointreau website here: https://www.cointreau.com/int/en/cointreau-margarita-challenge

DEADLINE TO ENTER: Monday, March 3rd at 11:59pm EST.

INDEPENDENT STUDY DAY! We are so excited to announce this month's ISD taking place on Tuesday, February 25th. This month we're talking with Aaron Hatchell, bar manager of Ace Hotel Toronto. We'll be discussing his career in the industry (hint: he only moved to the big city 5 months ago), his cocktail creativity (this man is always cooking something up!) and being a CAP at Tales of the Cocktail.

Plus: we're going to have a fun little hands-on activity after the chat. If you attended last month, bring your Bartender Atlas notebooks. If you're new, we'll be gifting you with a fresh one!

ISD is taking place as always at Ahma in Parkdale. Doors open at 12pm with a welcome cocktail and the industry talk begins at 12:30pm. Once the formal stuff is over there will be plenty of Giffard products to taste, cocktails to make and lunch to eat, all while spending time in a room of fellow bartenders.

This event is open to every and any bartender to attend. You MUST RSVP by filling out the form: https://bartenderatlas.com/isd . All confirmed guests must bring a non-perishable donation for the Parkdale Community Food Bank.

Big thanks to Giffard Canada for supporting this month's Independent Study Day!

Josh first met Kelsey Ramage in 2017 when they were both guests for the Petit Prix trip to Havana with Havana Club. At the time, Kelsey was working at Dandelyan in London, UK. Our next encounter with her was when she brought her Trash Tiki pop-up to Toronto. Through Trash Collective, Kelsey is known for sharing all of her wisdom when it comes to sustainability and no-waste bar practises. She truly paved the way for the rest of us to follow.

LET'S GET ON TRACK AND ENGAGED! We know that the world is a pretty dark place at times and we know how easy it is to lose our spark, our fire that encourages us and pushes us to continue doing what it is we do. We get lost in the darkness with our heads down.

We want to offer up some prompts to all of you as a way to feel inspired again. To get you thinking more about the industry and what you want from it. What you like. What you don’t like. Why you feel this way.

To remind you of why you do this drink-making thing. To get your spark back. These questions are here as journal prompts so you can really write out how you feel or simply give them a read and let them sit in your mind as you go about your day. We want to encourage you to be more active in your job, in your bar and in your community, however that feels best for you.

To get started, head over to the website: https://bartenderatlas.com/isd/on-track/
