The National 3 Peaks challenge is without doubt one of the most popular challenge events in the UK, attracting thousands to attempt the event each year. It’s an amazing challenge, visiting the summits of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, covering a distance of approximately 23 miles and climbing almost 10,000 feet. You don’t need to be a super-fit athlete to successfully complete this challenge, it’s within the capability of most reasonably active individuals, however preparing for the challenge can greatly increase your chances of success.
There is no ‘official’ route for the National 3 Peaks challenge but most start the event at Ben Nevis, adopting a north to south route. It is traditional to try to complete the challenge within 24 hours but, again, this is not an official ‘rule’, you can take as long as you want!
The popularity of the National 3 Peaks challenge has created certain problems for all 3 locations but in particular for the small hamlet of Wasdale Head. In the Summer months it is overwhelmed with participants attempting the challenge and facilities struggle to cope with the sheer numbers of people. Car parking is at a premium during these months at all 3 locations. Accommodation is also at a premium during Summer months so advance planning is essential. June and July are particularly busy months. Participants are now encouraged to consider attempting the challenge to avoid the busier months of June and July. Whenever you attempt the challenge please consider the residents of all three areas, in particular Wasdale Head and surrounding area.
Remember: be respectful, be courteous, be kind, leave only footprints and take only photographs - but don’t forget to have fun!
