Peak Resumes

Peak Resumes I help others communicate their skills and abilities to potential employers by crafting targeted resu Or the person might just walk away in awkward silence.

For more than a decade I have worked with clients in a broad range of industries, including human resources, law enforcement, sales, manufacturing, banking, education, hospitality, and the arts. In addition, I have been honored to work with veterans and transitioning military personnel who have amazing skills to offer the civilian work force. Résumé Development

Producing a well-written, accomplis

hments-focused résumé is a collaborative process and each person offers potential employers unique qualifications, experiences, and talents. The résumé development service includes an intake consultation phone call of 45 to 90 minutes to discuss your current résumé, work history, and career objective. Many of my clients have remarked how this intake consultation feels like a job interview. The difference is that this is a safe place to practice how you might answer questions. There are no right or wrong answers; the goal is to prepare not only your résumé for the application process, but also to give you an idea of how you can prepare yourself for an interview. Turnaround time for your new résumé is typically 5 to 7 days. Also included is a service delivery phone call of 30 minutes when we will review your new document in PDF and incorporate any edits that you would like. Your final document will be delivered via email in MS Word, PDF, and ASCII. Project quotes are based on your years of experience and the amount of time required to produce your custom document. Cover Letter Writing

Imagine walking into a room full of strangers and striking up a conversation – without introducing yourself and beginning in the middle of the story you wish to convey. The person might ask questions to figure out who you are and what you are trying to communicate. Sending an unsolicited résumé without the cover letter can lead to the same type of rebuff. A cover letter introduces you to the targeted employer and briefly explains why the reader should continue on to your résumé. LinkedIn Profile Development

LinkedIn is a key business networking tool used across the globe. Creating a compelling profile is one aspect of your career marketing efforts that should not be overlooked. In addition, the LinkedIn profile is an element from your job search efforts that you will take forward with you as you progress through your career. It is worth the investment in yourself to develop a focused, customized personal brand and to take the time to manage that brand throughout your career.

Still wondering if you need a LinkedIn profile? Or if that LinkedIn profile will really help your career? The answer is a resounding yes - but don't just take my word for it. As my colleague Wendi Weiner explains, "Your LinkedIn profile is more compelling than your resume because it gets you seen when your resume doesn't: when you aren't job searching."

As career conversations have shifted from “recession-proof” industries or sectors, many job seekers – whether they are in the early, exploratory phase or considering a career switch – are now considering the impact of “essential businesses” and what that means for them.

Many career fields in the trades have always been considered essential, and fortunately that did not change with the new realities of COVID-19. For example, chimney sweeps provide an important service that homeowners or owners of multi-family dwellings simply cannot complete on their own.

Launched in 1989 by Lou and Martha Neitz, Dr. SOOT Chimney Sweep, Inc. not only sweeps chimneys, their team inspects fireplaces and the entire chimney system, services wood stoves, and cleans dryer vents.

Because the company places such a high emphasis on customer service, the company provides hands-on, practical training for their employees. In addition, Martha Neitz offers an apprenticeship to provide experience for those interested in earning the Chimney Technician certification.

“We are more than just sweeps,” Martha explained. “Our clients entrust their homes and their personal safety with us, so understanding how a system is constructed and utilized enables us to do more than just sweep the system. We have the expertise and tools – including the ChimScan camera system – to look for seemingly small issues that are actually large problems. The small issues are often hidden from normal view.”

Since Dr. SOOT is hiring an apprentice, we talked about what she and Lou are looking for in a potential employee.

“Our company values focus on people, honor, integrity, safety, and truthfulness. So first and foremost we are looking for candidates who have the same values,” she explained. “Next, we are looking for someone who is teachable and willing to work hard. A college degree is not required, and we will provide the training from the ground up during the six-month apprenticeship to prepare for the six-hour CSIA test.”

(The Chimney Safety Institute of America and the National Chimney Sweep Guild are national organizations dedicated to the education, training, and certification of chimney and industry-related professionals. There are only about 1,800 active certified chimney professionals in the US, and Dr. SOOT has three of the seven in the Colorado Springs area.)

Martha added that apprentice candidates must be team players with good communication skills. “Many of our clients are long-term accounts who have been with Dr. SOOT for more than a decade. The ability to communicate effectively and courteously is essential for success as a Chimney Technician. Because our Chimney Technicians communicate with our clients throughout the process and are highly trained in their craft, we have only had to utilize our no-mess guarantee four times in thirty-one years.”

Other skills and qualifications the Dr. SOOT team looks for are the ability to work in tight spaces, on slanted roofs, and at levels of up to forty-five feet; the ability to lift heavy bricks, materials, tools, and supplies; and the willingness to learn the safe operation of heavy hand power tools, masonry skills, and specifications of various chimney and fireplace systems.

If you would like to learn more about the certified Chimney Technician apprenticeship, reach out to Dr. SOOT Chimney Sweep, Inc. at 719-598-4466 or https://dr-SOOT.com/

Established in 1989 by Lou Neitz, Dr. SOOT is the longest-running chimney sweep that families in Colorado Springs, Monument, Palmer Lake, Fountain, Peyton, Black Forest, and Manitou Springs trust to keep their homes warm, cozy and safe.

Know yourself and seek self-improvement is a leadership principle taught in the US military, and it is an idea that business professionals can apply throughout their careers. Considering this tenet during a career change or transition can be helpful, especially for those people who are uncertain about their next job.

Without a clear picture of what they want to do next, job seekers can run the risk of casting their nets too wide. “I can do just about anything because I have a strong set of diverse skills,” or “I’m not sure what I want to do next, I just know that I’m ready for change,” are phrases that I often hear. When they lack a strong focus in their career documents – the résumé, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, etc – job seekers might not clearly demonstrate why they are the best candidate for a role. However, by taking the time to consider two aspects of your career – what you have liked about your career and what you have disliked – you can gain a better understanding of yourself, what you offer an organization, and how a potential employer aligns with your goals, wants, and working style.

First, make a list of those tasks, skills, or projects from your career that you enjoyed. Your list might include skills that you have mastered; other people might include projects or problems that required them rise to the challenge, and still others will reflect on jobs or tasks that led to a sense of fulfillment. Brainstorm from your current role and work backward. Because you are brainstorming, simply let the thoughts flow until you have an extensive list.

Next, make a similar list of those areas of your career that you do not like. Consider tasks, projects, or working environments. The point is not to simply rehash the negative aspects of your career, but to identify those areas that did not or do not align with your career goals, professional strengths, or work ethos. It is also important to understand why a topic appears on this particular list. A personality conflict with a certain manager, for example, might lead you to investigate communication or behavior styles by completing a DISC assessment. Identifying a task or skill that you see as negative might lead to more training or the realization that you simply do not want to do that task or skill ever again.

Now that you have two comprehensive lists of the pros and cons of your career, review each list separately to look for common threads. Those common threads might lead you to a career path that is transferrable to any number of industries – project management, for example. Or you might draw out a common thread that helps you focus more closely on a specific industry or type of job, such as IT project management in healthcare.

With this common thread, or theme, in mind, narrow down your pros and cons to your top three, five, or ten items. Your priority lists, both the positive and the negative, will look different than any other job seeker, so focus on those areas that are most important to you rather than an arbitrary number.

Having taken the time to examine your strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, and preferences, you should have a good filter through which to process job opportunities. “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom” (Aristotle) and completing a disciplined review of certain aspects of your career can help provide focus for your next career target.

“Should my résumé be one or two pages?”

This is a question that I get at least weekly. Most job seekers understand the need to make a positive first impression with their career documents, and in the process, they fret over the page length for their résumés. But do they need to?

The answer is: probably not.

Let’s look at résumés for federal applications first. On the USA Jobs website the Office of Personnel Management answers this question in the “Federal hiring myths” section of the website:

A federal resume should not exceed two pages
False: A federal resume requires more information than a civilian resume, therefore, it is typically longer than two pages. Some of the things that should be included are your educational and work experience. This includes job titles, salary, employment dates, duties and accomplishments, and how it relates to the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) in the job announcement.

For job seekers in the civilian or business sector, doing a quick search on the internet for “how many pages for a resume” yields about 169 million results. Clearly this is a question that worries job seekers. And there a number of opinions out there. So how does one know what a hiring manager or recruiter wants?

The first step is to research the potential employer and, ideally, the targeted job to determine if that company or hiring manager has a preference for page length. If you have networking contacts at the company, ask for their guidance. In my experience – and I am only one certified writer among my peers who belong to the Professional Association of Résumés and the National Résumé Writers Association – page length for résumés is rarely specified in a vacancy announcement. If it is, follow that organization’s guidelines, whether one page is allowed or multiple pages.

For job seekers working with corporate or retained recruiters, ask what that recruiter prefers for page length. Recruiters are often reviewing multiple résumés for a single vacancy, and anything you can do to help make the recruiter’s job easier might benefit you as a candidate. In a 2018 study by ResumeGo, recruiters reportedly prefer two-page résumés for most candidates, from entry-level to senior-level candidates. While this study did not ask the participating recruiters (482 in total) why they preferred a two-page document, the data showed that they were 2.3 times more likely to prefer two-page résumés over one-page résumés.

It is important to remember, however, that this study simply shows the preference of the recruiters involved in the study. It provides data to argue for two-page résumés, but it doesn’t establish a hard and fast rule.

After doing your research to determine if the targeted employer or recruiter has a preference for page length, the second step – and perhaps most important – to take is to tailor your résumé for the desired job. Answer the hiring managers questions about your qualifications by addressing the requirements listed in the vacancy announcement through quantified examples of your experiences and accomplishments. Include specific examples using the CAR elements (challenge/context, action, result) to tie your experiences to the employer’s needs or requirements. Write your content with the reader in mind, focusing on the relevant results that you have produced and not just job descriptions, and page length will take care of itself.
