Ah Santa Fe, you draw me in every time wishing I could stay longer. Is it the crisp air and amazing blue skies, the way the light dances off of the surrounding landscape and adobe buildings, the culturally diverse history blended into the art and cuisine, or the 400 year old plaza that centers downtown museums, galleries, markets and dining in America’s oldest capital city.
Whatever it is, it continues to call me back!

🛫 it’s time to make travel plans! Swipe to be inspired!

👩🏼‍🤝‍👨🏽Where else in the world can you backbend into 4 states, hold hands standing in different states or kiss across several state lines? Yup, only in Four Corners USA!
🤸While some have said it’s not worth the drive, we say, this is the stuff road trips are made of! There is a line so photos must be quick but get back in line as many times as you like!
⚱️Plus, this site, on the Navajo Nation, has a wonderful selection of Native American art, jewelry, crafts and food sold in vendor stalls around the site!

🌄The entire four corners region has so much to offer on a road trip in many different directions. You could spend years exploring so pick your itinerary and this site can be included in any!

American Southwest Adventures
🚘Road trips usually include long stretches between destinations but there is always somewhere interesting to stretch your legs and your mind. Just be open to it!

⏹The Bluff Fort Highway billboard persuaded us to make this spontaneous road trip stop! Unexpectedly, we had a lesson in the determination and spirit of the American pioneers.
⛺️In 1879, a Morman group left their established homes and possessions to begin a new community along the San Juan River. The journey by wagon was expected to take 6 weeks but turned into 6 months after having to chisel a wagon path through a 1200 ft drop in the cliffs, now know as the Hole-in-the-Rock. The 70 exhausted families then decided to settle sooner in a flat area of the river valley calling it Bluff City! How about that!

🍦Sure made us value roads and comfy cars for that matter! With an interesting history, indoor and outdoor areas, short movie, wonderful gift shop and even ice cream, we left there smarter, fulfilled and ready to take on the long drive ahead!

🏞Consider exploring Bears Ears National Monument or floating the San Juan River close by!

Ever wonder how Monument Valley came to be so prominent in Hollywood productions? It starts with a love story in the 1920s!

🌈The beauty of road trips is you can make them yours. Research the areas you are going but also be open to detours along the way. You will be amazed at the gems you find!

🏜On your way out of Monument Valley grab breakfast across the street in Utah at Goulding’s Lodge. Here you will find the love story of Harry and Leone (nickname Mike) Goulding and the life they created operating a Ranch and Trading post overlooking Monument Valley in the 1920s. They learned the language of their only neighbors, the Navajos, and created deep friendships and business relationships.

⛺️When drought and the depression hit in the 30’s, Harry headed to Hollywood to pitch the unique landscape to Director, John Ford who was filming Westerns. Unable to gain a meeting, Harry had a fortuitous interaction with the location manager of the John Wayne movie, Stagecoach. Within weeks, the cast and crew moved to live and work in tents on the Goulding’s property. Harry lined up extras roles for the Navajos and this landscape became a cinematic star!
The Goulding’s built this lodge (you can stay and/or eat here today)and the rest is history!

Many photos were from The Gouldings friend, renowned photographer, Josef Muench. It was his photos Harry had with him in his visit to Hollywood!

How can you leave Monument Valley in the background without reenacting the Forest Gump scene? 🚗. The making of a great road trip is not always defined by the destinations, but what you do in between them.

Today marks 2 years since the devastating fire at one of the world’s greatest architectural treasures, Notre-Dame Cathedral. The resilience of this beloved symbol of Paris has been tested before in its 800+ year history though this may be one of its most most difficult.

🇫🇷With an opening goal of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the continued restoration will likely be ongoing for a decade or more.

🕍You can now visit the outdoor court and marvel at this French Gothic Beauty. Beautiful inside and out with a spirit that pervades as you walk through and experience its history, architecture, artwork and strength!
👉Put it on your bucket list.

From the Hopi Reservation to the Navajo Nation, we venture to America’s most iconic Southwest landscape, Monument Valley. Part of the Navajo Tribal Park, this natural beauty has been featured in over 60 films
One of the Earth’s greatest masterpieces, sculpted over time by siltstone and sandstone wind blown into beautiful shapes and hues is accented by the expansive sky, wind swept clouds and scattered shrubs and trees. No matter the time of day you view the stationary buttes and mesas, the changing atmosphere creates a spellbinding scene.

“Nature is the purest portal to inner peace” Angie Weiland-Crosby

🏜Visit: To hike or drive around the monuments, purchase a pass from the Navajo Nation.
Even better stay within the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park at The View Hotel & Cabins and experience the monuments all day and night!
🍴Dine at the hotel and try the Navajo Tacos. After dinner Shop for authentic Native American crafts at the Trading Post.

🌗For an unforgettable experience, hire an authorized Navajo guide to explore and learn about the Navajo lands, history and culture. See our next post!

Last of our Grand Canyon inspirations before we head back on the road!

☀️Experience Sunrise & Sunset
See the Sun Rise over the canyon slowly breathing life into the Earth.
At sunset, the sun moves below the canyon walls creating the most amazing painting in motion segueing to evening.

🏇In between Sunrise and Sunset
>Hike or Ride a mule into the Canyon
>Walk or Bike the Rim Trail
>Eat, Shop, Explore Grand Canyon Village
😊There is so much to do and see!

Regardless of where you stay, visit the Bright Angel Lodge History Room and fireplace of the exact geological layers seen on the Bright Angel Trail! Mules are around back of lodge.

Head to the El Tovar built in 1905, at one time, the most elegant hotel West of the Mississippi. Have a drink in its lobby or reserve a Canyon View table (months in advance) for rustic fine dining!

A trip to the Grand Canyon is incomplete without visiting the thoughtfully designed buildings that grace the rim. Their timeless beauty and relevance is a testament to architect and designer Mary Coulter who blended them into their setting using natural materials, historical and cultural content and beautiful vantage points.

A great TIP is to use the EAST Entrance of Grand Canyon Park onto Desert View Drive. Not only is it much less crowded but It has beautiful scenic overlooks, trails and sites as you make your way toward the village. Make sure you stop to climb the 70 ft tall authentically designed Desert Watchtower to view the Colorado River as it bends and experience the Native American designed interior completed in 1932 by Hopi artist, Fred Kabotie.

Look, listen and feel, the beauty of our earth and those who graced it before us!

Southwest Road trip
Stop at the commerce centers of the American Frontier, Trading Posts! They were scattered around the outside of the Native American Reservations.

At one time, Trading Posts were an integral part of life for Native Americans and Frontier fur trappers exchanging their goods such as hand woven rugs, jewelry, baskets, fur, for food and other necessities. Consequently , they also became a social hub. Today, still selling authentic Native American goods, they cater more to tourists.

A great road trip is more than getting from Point A to Point B. Look, listen and learn along your journey and you will take home much more than your memories!

💥Whoa!! A Meteor?! This 3/4 mile wide, 600 ft deep crater that rises 200 ft above the plain was caused by a meteor almost 50,000 years ago. Fragments up to 1400 lbs have been found along with meteorite dust made of rare minerals not found here on earth!

West of Winslow and 37 miles East of Flagstaff, Meteor Crater Natural Landmark, just off I-40 has all the makings of a great road trip stop! Not just a look over, but includes a museum, movie, 4D simulator, guided rim tour, and a cool gift shop! So fascinating that scientists, researchers, and astronauts still conduct research in it!

Inspiration: Southwest Road Trip

🚙Travel 55 miles West from Albuquerque to Acoma Pueblo also known as Sky City. Sitting atop a 367 ft high sandstone Mesa, 6500 ft above sea level, is North America’s oldest continuously inhabited community. (Since 1100 AD) There is still no running water, plumbing or electricity on the Mesa. Today about 20%.of the 250 dwellings are lived in full time. The others passed down through families matralineally are used on weekends and/or holidays.

🚌Until the 60s the only way up or down was the steps hand carved into the side of the Mesa. Today there is a road. However, after a tour, you have the option to walk down them!

🌅 Don’t miss this enchanting place of stunning landscapes, fascinating history and resilient kind people.

📞Call ahead to check your availability and make sure to allow time for the Sky City Cultural Center & Haak’u Museum! It contains artifacts, a brief movie, vintage photos and history and display of their pottery.

🏜This 1300 mile 10 day road trip began with a rented Chevy Suburban and a stay at Hotel magnate, Conrad Hilton’s 4th ever hotel (now Hotel Andaluz) located in one of America’s oldest cities, Albuquerque in The Land of Enchantment; New Mexico.

🏩Hotel Andaluz built in 1939 was Hotel Magnate and native New Mexican, Conrad Hilton’s 4th hotel and location of his honeymoon with Zsa Zsa Gabor.
We loved this historic hotel’s decor inspired by Spain’s Andalusian Region. Leave time to explore and have a drink in one of the cozy nooks on the second floor. The on-site restaurant, Mas Tapas y Vino is wonderful!

🚗 Curating a road trip can be daunting but personalizing it is Fun! Choose the location and begin planning with a map app. Map the must sees and travel time in between.
