What is Greenwashing?
Going ‘green’ has become a marketing tool. Resorts, tour operators, and dive shops may advertise their eco-friendly practices in order to get your attention and your business. Unfortunately, these green claims are not always true. Greenwashing is the practice of disseminating false information in order to appear environmentally responsible to the general public. A resort may call itself ‘green’ even though it has done nothing to reduce its environmental footprint, a dive store may say they care about conservation but let their employees manhandle wildlife. A little research goes a long way in avoiding greenwashing, and it need not take much time.
