Ulmus ‘Jacqueline Hillier’. This little twisty-stemmed tree is halfway down the garden, where it makes a great shade parasol in summer and neatly blocks the view of the house behind. The branches grow in dense horizontal layers that can be clipped, hedge-like.
It doesn’t flower, but I think its shape and general quirkiness make up for that, and anyway, green is my colour.

Filipendula camtschatica, the Giant meadowsweet, is in flower now, looking cool and quietly jungly amongst the tree peonies. F.c prefers damp shade and eventually grows to around 2m high.

Recent windy weather has given some of the taller plants a bit of a battering, but the lavender, myrtle and santolinas can take it. They’re sculptural, constant and reliable, like living stones. I love them.

Yesterday, a wonderful day in the Welsh valleys visiting gardens and walking landscapes.

The garden is full of old dog roses, shrubs that were planted by the previous owners over 40 years ago. I love the way they flower so unobtrusively amongst other plants, often so high up you have to go looking for them.

MONMOUTHSHIRE TOUR
June 8th
Looking forward very much to our visit next week to The Pant and New Inn Farm, neighbouring gardens in a magnificent setting deep in the Welsh valleys. The gardens are quite different in character from each other, but both revel in their steep-sided setting and the exhilarating views out.
Much to see and explore in both gardens, from terraces and viewing points to mysterious buildings, parterres and a green theatre.

Today, the first perfect bloom of Rose ‘Munstead Wood’. Has a centre like scrunched tissue paper and gorgeous rose of attar perfume - had to bring it inside to pay homage to it.

VISIT TO FARRS GARDEN
Wonderful and stimulating visit to at John and Jennie’s home and garden yesterday. A journey through contrasting spaces begins in green, with lawns around the house that are entirely hedged around with bulging giant yew topiary. A contemporary sculpture frames the entrance to an enclosure where you must cross water by a simple hu**ed bridge and are then delivered into a walled garden that is exploding with fabulous planting and vibrant colour.
So much to see and admire. Must come again.

Visit to The Pant & New Inn Farm on June 8th.

There are a few places left on our day tour to these two exceptional private gardens deep in the Welsh Valleys. Walk round with their owners, Camilla and Jeremy Swift, and the garden writer and Times columnist Stephen Anderton. Lunch at The Pant. Travel by minibus from Newport Station.
